Canton senior defenseman Teddy Shuman has been named the 2025-2026 HockomockSports.com Boys Hockey Player of the Year after capping his stellar career with a second Division 2 state championship. A cornerstone on the blue line, Shuman played a pivotal role for one of the best, if not the best, teams in the state on both ends of the ice.
Shuman was the most complete player in the Hockomock League this season, combining elite defensive ability with high-level offensive production from the blue line. He consistently dictated play on the ice using his vision and passing ability to generate offense, creating opportunities for teammates time and time again. He finished the season with five goals and 38 assists for 43 points in 25 games while also anchoring Canton’s defense at even strength and playing key roles on both the power play and penalty kill.
“Teddy was such a steady and reliable presence for Canton all season long,” said HockomockSports.com Editor Ryan Lanigan. “He always seemed to make the right choice with the puck, whether it was a safe decision in the defensive zone, a precision pass in the offensive zone, or taking a shot himself. He played a completely unselfish game, constantly looking to set up his teammates. You just knew that any time he got the puck, he would do the right thing. He’s been that type of player since he was a freshman, and it’s fitting that he finishes his career on top as a two-time state champion.”
Shuman played a major role in Canton’s dominant season, as he played the most minutes on the Bulldogs and led a defense that allowed just 17 goals all year. His ability to control the pace of play, break the puck out cleanly, and contribute offensively made him one of the most impactful players in the state. A lot of Canton’s success in the offensive zone could be traced back to a play Shuman made.
“It’s rare to have a player who can dominate defensively while also contributing so much offensively, but Teddy does exactly that,” said Canton head coach Brian Shuman. “He logged more minutes than anyone, and was on the ice for just three goals against all season. For a team that scored over 100 goals and allowed only 17, everything started with Teddy on the back end.”
Shuman becomes the latest Canton player to earn Player of the Year honors, joining a talented list of Bulldogs that includes Brian Brooks (2013), Jackson Maffeo (2016, 2017), Ryan Nolte (2018, 2019), Johnny Hagan (2020), and Travis Thomas (2025).
Honorable Mention: Ryan Elrick (Canton), Evan Regan (King Philip), Jameson Vallarelli (Taunton)

Teddy Shuman – Canton – Defense
Canton senior defenseman Teddy Shuman capped his career with a state championship, winning his second title with the Bulldogs. A key piece on the blue line, Shuman is an unselfish player with great vision who consistently generated offense and set up teammates. He finished with five goals and 38 assists in 25 games, while also serving as a shutdown defenseman who routinely broke up plays and won one-on-one battles in the defensive zone. He was named HockomockSports Player of the Year (above).

A true leader for the Rocketeers both on and off of the ice, Kojoian was the engine of the offense, finishing with 10 goals and a team-high 26 assists for 36 points in 21 games. “What can I say about Alex that I haven’t already said? He is an amazing young man to say the least,” said North Attleboro head coach Anthony Sarno. “He is the heartbeat of our team and will do anything it takes to lead his team to win. He’s played hurt, played on broken skates for the betterment of the team, and always puts his teammates first. In my opinion he is one of the most amazing human beings I have ever had the pleasure to coach. He is a great leader on and off the ice and a high honor student with so many extraordinary qualities that are shaping him into the incredible young man he is becoming. His efforts inspire teammates and make others around him better.”

He finished with a 2.14 goals against average and a .890 save percentage while making 403 saves and recording four shutouts. His 2.14 GAA was the lowest by a Taunton goalie in over five decades, helping the Tigers allow their fewest goals in a season since 1975. “Luke is a team player and he comes to the rink ready to work every day,” Taunton coach Kris Metea said. “Coming in after Cam [Tomaszycki] left a lot of questions and pressure, but he answered the bell with a fierce determination, and he did it quietly and humbly. He gained confidence as the season progressed and proved to be a top league goaltender with his efforts by the end.”

He does it all. He defends, scores, and sets up goals for his teammates with exceptional playmaking ability. He made an impact in every game this season and saved his best for the state semifinal against Burlington, where he was the best player on the ice.”

He finished the season with three goals and 11 assists for 14 points in 24 games. “When we needed someone to shut down the opponent’s top line, Will always answered the call,” said Canton head coach Brian Shuman. “He’s an outstanding skater who uses his speed to defend, and very few players could beat him to a puck or get past him one-on-one. He was a force for us all season.”
Ryan Shepherd – North Attleboro – Defense
North Attleboro sophomore defenseman Ryan Shepherd provided a big boost for the Rocketeers this season with his ability to impact the game in all three zones, and he was a big reason why Big Red finished second in the Davenport and earned (and won) a home tournament game.
