Members of the Hockomock Leadership Executive Ambassador Program (LEAP) recently had the opportunity to put their leadership skills into action by helping plan and run the league’s Fall Captains Conference at Mass Premier Courts.
Nine LEAP members – Lindsey Mitchell, Zach Lapointe, Dharma Trivedi, Cam Murk, Kyla Nashawaty, Serena Akinboboye, Logan McAndrew, Justin Hrenko, and Grace Sigman – helped organize the conference and led activities for roughly 350 captains and student leaders from all 12 Hockomock League schools.

Being part of the team that designed this year’s Hockomock League Fall Captains Conference was an incredibly rewarding experience that began in early spring. After our first meeting, we knew that we wanted to do something a little different from previous years. We wanted to focus on interactive activities to get our peers truly involved.
We felt that captains would learn more about leadership by practicing it firsthand rather than listening to a speaker. We then spent the following months researching and planning a variety of activities that would teach valuable lessons about teamwork, communication, and leadership in general.
One of the most difficult parts of planning was configuring a schedule without knowing exactly how long each piece of the conference would take. At our last meeting in August, we simulated all of our activities so that each team member knew exactly what their role was, and we were able to finalize our timeline for the conference. After the schedule was sent out to all schools, all we could do was wait for the big day to arrive.
The day of the conference, it was go, go, go right from the start. Teams were arriving at different times, which meant that we were arriving at different times as well. With some help from fellow LEAP members, we began organizing all the materials while the schools got situated.
Once everyone was there and everything was ready, we reviewed our plan one last time. Feeling slightly nervous but excited, we separated into our respective courts and waited for the groups to arrive. We each followed our designed schedule but had the freedom to tailor each activity based on the needs presented, and we adapted when necessary.
It was extremely rewarding to hear the shouts of joy and excitement coming from all the other courts as the day went on. That excitement only continued when we brought all the schools back to the gym for a competitive tug-of-war competition.
As we wrapped up the event with closing remarks to drive home the points we made about leadership, we all felt a major sense of accomplishment. We had planned this entire conference, and seeing it come together in the best way we could have imagined made all of the hard work we put in worth it.
The Hockomock LEAP Fall Captains Conference brought together student leaders from across the league for a morning focused on leadership, communication, teamwork, and collaboration. LEAP members helped plan and run the event, leading activities for roughly 350 captains and student leaders representing all 12 Hockomock League schools.
