Mansfield senior pitcher and infielder Jake Maydak has been named the 2024 HockomockSports.com Baseball Player of the Year. Maydak had a terrific season on the mound, at the plate, and defensively in the infield for the Davenport division champion Hornets.
“Jake was the top all-around player this year, standing out both as a pitcher and as an offensive player for Mansfield,” said HockomockSports.com Editor Ryan Lanigan. “He was one of the best pitchers in the league, allowing three or fewer runs in seven of his nine appearances, was also one of the most consistent hitters in the league, and was among the offensive league leaders in many key categories.”
Maydak, who was also selected as the Hockomock League MVP by the coaches, was a starting pitcher for the Hornets and manned first base in games he wasn’t on the mound. His bat was so important that the Hornets even played him at third for a game against rival Foxboro just to keep him in the lineup. On the mound, he posted a 4-2 record in 39.1 innings of work while allowing just eight earned runs all season (1.42 ERA). He struck out 49 batters with just one wild pitch, holding opponents to a 0.216 batting average. He tossed a complete game shutout against Attleboro, six shutout innings against Milford (D2 state semifinalists), and four scoreless innings against Walpole (D2 state finalists).
“Jake was a four-year starter for the Hornets and he grew exponentially each year to become one of the most feared players and leaders in the Hockomock League,” said Mansfield head coach Chris Hall. “Jake worked tirelessly to improve his game and evolved into a top two-way player in the Hockomock.”
At the plate, Maydak was a big contributor and was a big reason the Hornets secured a second straight Davenport division title. Offensively, he posted a team-high 0.370 batting average with a team-best 27 hits. He was second on the Hornets with six doubles and 13 runs scored while driving in a team-high 10 runs.
Maydak is the second Hornet to earn the award in its nine-year existence, joining Tyler Dalton in 2018. Other former winners include Taunton’s Ryan MacDougall (2022) and Luke Figueira (2016), Franklin’s Alex Haba (2019), Mansfield’s Tyler Dalton (2018), Stoughton’s Justin Hutchinson (2017), Oliver Ames’ Brendan Welch (2015) and David MacKinnon (2013), and Attleboro’s Max Lancaster (2014).
Honorable Mention: Damien Carter (Milford), Connor Curtis (Mansfield), Caden Lindskog (Taunton)
Please note that the HockomockSports.com awards are selected by our staff. They are completely separate from the Hockomock League All Stars. Players are listed alphabetically by position.

Wyatt Bolduc – Mansfield – Catcher
Mansfield senior Wyatt Bolduc took over behind the plate this year and was an instrumental piece in helping the Hornets secure a second straight Davenport division title. He hit 0.269 this year, going 18-for-67, and totaled over 40 hits over the past two seasons. He tied for second on the team in RBI (nine) and runs (11) this year. “Wyatt has played a crucial role for the Hornets over the last three seasons,” said Mansfield head coach Chris Hall. “As a senior, Wyatt took over behind the plate and grew to become a phenomenal leader. Shane is very fundamentally sound and has a high baseball IQ.”
Gio Martello – North Attleboro – Infield

On the mound, he was one of the top pitchers in the league with just 32 hits, 13 walks, and 11 earned runs allowed in 42 innings (1.70 ERA). He finished among the league leaders with 51 strikeouts and also had a save. “Gio was a rock for us all season,” said North Attleboro head coach Mike Hart. “We relied heavily on him as a starting pitcher, shortstop, and top-of-the-order hitter. Aiden is a strong power hitter that provided us with a lot of production at the plate.”
Dwayne Burgo – Taunton – Outfield
Taunton senior Dwayne Burgo had another strong year in the outfield for the Tigers, who won the Kelley-Rex division for the first time in eight years. After playing a big role in helping Taunton win the state title a year ago, Burgo picked up right where he left off with another season hitting over 0.300, going 23-for-74 (0.311) during the 2024 campaign, including a team-best five doubles. Nick Koch – Milford – Outfield
Milford junior Nick Koch took a big step this season and turned out to be one of the top outfielders in the Hockomock League. As the leadoff hitter, Koch was the spark plug for the Milford offense, which produced the most runs (134) in the league. He had a team-high 29 hits, including five doubles, for a 0.349 batting average. He also added 11 walks (0.433 OBP) and stole four bases, scoring a team-high 21 runs, and adding 15 RBI. He was also very strong defensively in center field with just one error all year. “Nick played a stellar centerfield for us and was our leadoff hitter for the entire season,” said Milford head coach Alex Dion. “He is a dynamic player that has a promising future.”
Ryan O’Leary – Foxboro – DH/Utility
Whether it was on the mound, at the plate, or in the field, Foxboro junior Ryan O’Leary contributed heavily for the Warriors during the 2024 season. Starting with pitching, O’Leary was a workhorse for Foxboro with 56 innings of work in 10 appearances (eight starts), posting a 5-4 record with one save. He only allowed eight earned runs (1.00 ERA) with 48 strikeouts and 14 walks. Offensively, he went 17-for-59 for a 0.288 average, finishing the season with eight runs and seven RBI. “Ryan has been an outstanding two-way player for us the last two seasons,” said Foxboro head coach Derek Suess. “He’s the type of kid who is naturally good at almost everything he does, but he couples that with the determination to keep getting better. With his ability to pound the zone and control the pace of the game, he was efficient and gave us a chance to win every time he stepped on the mound. Over 83 innings in the last two seasons, his ERA and WHIP are both under 1. His numbers speak for themselves.”
Jack Cali – Taunton – Pitcher
After helping the Tigers win a state championship last year, Taunton senior Jack Cali was equally impressive throughout the 2024 campaign and helped the program win its first Kelley-Rex title since the 2016 season. He tossed 43 innings this year (90 in the last two seasons), going 5-1 in 11 appearances (eight starts). With just 10 earned runs against (1.63 ERA), Cali struck out 39 batters compared to just 10 walks. “Jack’s dependability and performance proved why he’s an ace, always providing quality innings and keeping us in games,” said Taunton head coach Blair Bourque. “He’s an intelligent pitcher with the ability to throw any pitch in any count for strikes, keeps hitters guessing.”
Austin Campbell – Franklin – Pitcher
Franklin senior Austin Campbell was one of the toughest pitchers to have success against this year and helped the Panthers get back to the state tournament yet again this season. His record (3-5) was not indicative of his dominance on the mound this year as he led the Hockomock League with 88 strikeouts, allowing a total of just 31 hits and 17 earned runs. He finished his senior season with a 2.13 ERA. “Austin has tremendous stuff on the hill,” said Franklin head coach Zach Brown. “Which is evident by his high strikeout totals and low hit totals. Austin is a great competitor who always wants the ball in big games and big spots. He will be greatly missed.”
Tyler Dunlea – Attleboro – Pitcher
Attleboro junior Tyler Dunlea quickly re-established himself as one of the top pitchers in the Hockomock League, making his way back after missing last season due to injury. After making a splash as a freshman two seasons ago, he jumped right back in as one of the top pitchers in the league. In nine appearances — seven of which were starts — Dunlea allowed just 10 earned runs in 38 innings, posting a 4-3 record with a 1.84 ERA. Alongside Jonny Pagano, the Bombardiers had one of the top pitching duos in the Hockomock League. He also struck out 42 batters and limited opposing batters to a 0.182 batting average.
Canton sophomore Shane Kelleher has been named the 2024 HockomockSports.com Baseball Underclassman of the Year after another strong season playing for the Bulldogs. He earned an honorable mention for league all stars and was selected to the HockomockSports.com Second Team.
Kelleher established his spot in the Canton lineup last year as a freshman, hitting over 0.300. He continued to improve this year during his sophomore campaign, starting primarily at third but also saw time at shortstop and in the outfield.
“Shane proved he’s one of the top hitters in the league by having a second straight great year at the dish,” said HockomockSports.com Editor Ryan Lanigan. “The Class of 2026 had some pretty talented players contributing at the varsity level this year but Shane’s consistent play and steadiness at the plate stood out above the rest.”
He went 28-for-75 at the dish, good for a 0.373 batting average. He also had 11 RBI and was very strong in the field with a 0.945 fielding percentage. In just two years, he has over 40 hits.
“Shane was a bulldog for us this season, hitting in either the one or two spot,” said Canton head coach David Walsh. “He was solid defensively and has the ability to play multiple positions with a strong arm. Shane is very fundamentally sound and has a high baseball IQ.”
Kelleher is the first Canton baseball player to win this award, and the seventh sophomore joining King Philip’s Travis Crawford (2022), North Attleboro’s Jared Penta (2019), Stoughton’s George Currier (2018), Attleboro’s Eoin Kelleher (2017), Oliver Ames’ Matt Muir (2016), and Taunton’s Luke Figueira (2014). Other previous winners include Milford freshman Aidan Wilde (2015) and Franklin freshman Nick Santucci (2013).
Honorable Mention: Joey McGee (Milford), Leo Dowling (King Philip), Sean Kryzak (Franklin)
Coach of the Year – Alex Dion, Milford
Milford head coach Alex Dion has been selected as the 2024 HockomockSports.com Baseball Coach of the Year after leading the Scarlet Hawks to a second-place finish in the Kelley-Rex and a tournament run to the state quarterfinals.
In his seventh year at the helm, Dion has guided the Hawks to back-to-back winning seasons and this year helped Milford take second place in the Kelley-Rex division, which has proven to be among the most competitive divisions in the entire state. The Hawks had impressive wins over league rivals Franklin and King Philip, and also secured a win over eventual D1 state finalists St. John’s Shrewsbury.
“Milford entered the season as a team to watch and Coach Dion kept his team focused throughout the season and they ended up as the last Hockomock team standing,” said HockomockSports.com Editor Ryan Lanigan. “They did a lot of the small things to find ways to win and competed hard in every game.”
This is the first time Dion has earned the honor and the first Milford baseball coach to win the award. Previous winners include Foxboro’s Derek Suess (2022), Franklin’s Zach Brown (2019 and 2017), North Attleboro’s Mike Hart (2018), Stoughton’s Mike Armour (2016), Mansfield’s Joe Breen (2015), Oliver Ames’ Leo Duggan (2014) and Taunton’s Jeff Sylvia (2013).
