boen

Mansfield senior Michael Boen has been named the fourth annual HockomockSports.com Boys Basketball Player of the Year for the 2014-2015 season. Boen was also voted a Hockomock League All Star by the coaches.

“Michael is one of the most complete players to come through the league in recent history,” HockomockSports.com Editor-in-Chief Ryan Lanigan said. “When talking to coaches around the league, they all say how Michael plays the game the right way and is one of the toughest match ups to play against.”

Boen was among the top ten in the league in scoring, averaging 15 points per game. He was one of the best rebounders in the Hockomock with 8.5 rebounds a game and maybe the most impressive was his 6.4 assists per game.

“Michael was a tremendous competitor,” Mansfield head coach Mike Vaughan said. “Practice drills, scrimmages or games you typically wanted Michael on your team. He plays the game with such a great pace and really improved his skills set over the years from his freshman year to his senior season.”

Boen was a vital part in Mansfield claiming it’s third straight Hockomock League Kelley-Rex Division title. The Hornets also earned a trip to the D1 South Sectional Finals, a game in which Boen shined with a team-high 25 points and added six assists in the Hornets’ loss to Catholic Memorial.

“When I think of a Player of the Year, I look at do they make big shots, can they be trusted on defense, do they take care of the ball, can they make clutch free throws, and do they display leadership. Michael Boen shatters all of the above,” King Philip head coach Matt Coute said.

He added, “When I was in college, we called guys like Mike Boen ‘dusters.’ He dusted the floor with all the competition. I only got to coach against him twice and it was a nightmare. However, I found that his greatest quality was that he seemed to play his best games during Mansfield’s tourney run when the lights were the brightest. Boen is a duster and a deserving Player of the Year.”

Boen is the second straight Mansfield player to win the HockomockSports.com Boys Basketball Player of the Year, following Rocky DeAndrade last year. He is the fourth player from the Kelley-Rex Division to win, joining DeAndrade (2014), Franklin’s Sam Bohmiller (2013) and King Philip’s Jake Layman (2012).

Honorable Mention: Ryan Boulter, Mansfield. Corey Green, Taunton.

dambreville
Taunton sophomore EJ Dambreville has been named the 2014-2015 HockomockSports.com Boys Basketball Underclassman of the Year, the fourth season the award has been given out. Dambreville is the first Taunton player to win the award.

Dambreville was impressive in his first year on varsity, averaging a near double-double. He was one of the top scorers among underclassman with 10.8 points per game and was the best in rebounds with 8.4 boards per game. Dambreville was selected as a Hockomock League All Star by the coaches.

“His effort in every game was a constant,” Taunton head coach Charlie Dacey said. “His rebounding skills are so unique. He’s in constant motion with a skill all about finding the ball. He plays a lot bigger than his size.”

Dambreville showed he’s not afraid of the bright lights, having his best game of the season in Taunton’s first round game. Against a bigger Needham team, Dambreville scored 20 points and had 14 rebounds.

“Coming into the season, one question lingering was how Taunton was going to fill some holes, whether it was from graduation or transfers. Just a sophomore, EJ quickly became a reliable option for the Tigers,” HockomockSports.com Editor-in-Chief Ryan Lanigan said. “Just throughout the court of the season, you could see the progress from EJ. He has crazy athleticism and I truly believe he has the ability to be a top player in this league.”

Dambreville is the second player from the Kelley-Rex Division to win this award, joining Mansfield’s Brendan Hill (2013). Sharon’s Jordan Mello-Klein (2014) and Brian Mukasa (2012) are the other recipients of the award

reno

Franklin senior Dylan Reno has been named the 2014-2015 HockomockSports.com Boys Basketball Defender of the Year, the fourth season that the award has been given out. Reno was also selected as a Hockomock League All Star by the coaches.

“Aside from being a great leader and teammate, Dylan is the best individual defender I have ever coached,” Franklin head coach CJ Neely said. “It is such a luxury to know you have a guy like Reno that can matchup with every team’s best player and he will almost always hold them under their scoring average.

“He is just so competitive, he can guard any position and never backs down from a challenge.  His ability to pressure the ball, contest shots and get his hands in the passing lanes can really frustrate his opponents and gives our team a tremendous boost every night. He was a pleasure to coach and he will be really tough to replace next season.”

Reno was often tasked with guarding the opposing team’s top player and did an admirable job against some of the best players in the state. Reno averaged 3.0 steals per game and help seven of the league’s top 10 scorers under their average points per game.

“Dylan was tremendous on the defensive end this season, both on and off the ball,” HockomockSports.com Editor-in-Chief Ryan Lanigan said. “He was constantly guarding the top scorers in the league. His late steal and lay up against Wachusett was a huge moment in the Panther’s tournament run.”

Reno is the first Franklin player and the second Kelley-Rex Division player to be selected as the HockomockSports.com Defender of the Year. Reno was able to hold this year’s Player of the Year Michael Boen to just nine points in their meeting at the TD Garden.

The Wentworth-bound senior joins Mansfield’s Kyle Wisnieski (2014), Oliver Ames’ St. Clair Ryan (2013) and Stoughton’s Marcus Middleton (2012) as winners of the award.

Mike VaughanMansfield head coach Michael Vaughan has been named the 2014-2015 HockomockSports.com Boys Basketball Coach of the Year. It’s the second time Vaughan has been selected, also winning the award in 2013. Vaughan becomes the first coach to ever win the award twice.

Vaughan led the Hornets to a 20-2 regular season record and a 23-3 overall record. The Hornets won the Kelley-Rex Division title for the third straight time – the first time in program history. Vaughan also led Mansfield back to the D1 South Sectional Finals for the second time in three seasons.

“Coach Vaughan has had a major impact on my life. He has not only made me into the basketball player I am today but the person as well,” Mansfield senior Michael Boen said.
“He demands the best from us everyday and that’s why our program has been the way it has over the past 10 years.”

Vaughan joins Taunton’s Charlie Dacey (2014) and Franklin’s Dean O’Connor (2012) as winners of the award.
