2015 HockomockSports Boys Lacrosse Awards

Franklin senior attacker Jack Vail has been chosen as the 2015 HockomockSports.com Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year. Vail led the Panthers to a third straight Kelley-Rex Division title and was chosen as the Hockomock MVP by the league coaches. This is the second year in a row that Vail has been named Player of the Year.

“Jack was the best player on the best team in the league and an easy choice to be Player of the Year,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “Whether he got the ball behind the cage, in transition, or at the ‘X’ Vail was capable of scoring. He also had one of the most accurate shots that I saw all year and was capable of great goals.”

Vail scored 55 goals for the Panthers this season and also added 38 assists. He was selected as a first team Eastern Massachusetts All-American by the Eastern Mass. Lacrosse Coaches Association. The Springfield College-commit also scored in big games, including a six-goal performance (five in the second half) against Xaverian that pushed Franklin to the Div. 1 South semifinal for the first time in the program’s history.

2015 HockomockSports Boys Lacrosse Awards

King Philip sophomore goalie Paul Macrina has been named the third annualHockomockSports.com Boys Lacrosse Underclassman of the Year. Macrina was the backbone of the Warriors defense that helped KP claim third in the Kelley-Rex and qualify again for the postseason.

“Paul could take over a game and single-handedly keep the Warriors in a game to give time for the offense to get going,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “He can be physically imposing from close range, but he also has the quickness to snag a rip to the corner.”

Macrina saved 69 percent of the shots that he faced this season and allowed only 6.31 goals per game. Overall, Macrina saved 299 shots and helped push the Warriors past Marshfield on the road in the tournament before being eliminated by South champion Duxbury.

He is the first goalie to win the award and is the second straight King Philip player to be chosen as the Underclassman of the Year following attacker Johnny Piatelli last year. Franklin LSM Mike Sullivan was the first Underclassman of the Year in 2013.

Honorable Mention: Eric Civetti, Franklin – Josh Rotman, Sharon – Michael Pigeon, Canton

Lou VerrochiCoach of the Year – Lou Verrochi, Franklin
Franklin head coach Lou Verrochi has been named the third annual HockomockSports.com Boys Lacrosse Coach of the Year. Verrochi led the Panthers to a third straight Kelley-Rex Division title and to the program’s first ever Div. 1 South semifinal.

“Coach Verrochi kept the Panthers focused as the playoffs began and inspired his team to compete with some of the state’s best,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “With the Xaverian game going against his team, he called timeout to rally the troops and prevented a collapse. With a team that has as many personalities as Franklin had this spring, Verrochi worked hard to keep everyone working towards a common goal.”

Franklin finished the season at 17-4 and was a perfect 9-0 in the Hockomock. In addition to success in the league, the Panthers also picked up impressive wins against perennially strong programs Xaverian and Wellesley. The only losses this season came against teams in the top 15 in the state. The Panthers were No. 5 in the state in one publication’s final rankings.

Verrochi is the first Kelley-Rex coach to be selected as Coach of the Year, following Canton coach Bill Bendell in 2013 and Sharon coach Patrick Kelley in 2014. Verrochi is the eighth Franklin coach in all sports to be chosen (Tom Geysen, girls’ soccer [2]; Kristen Igoe, girls’ lax [2]; Dean O’Connor, boy’s basketball; Chris Spillane, boys’ hockey; and Lisa Cropper, field hockey).
