Nico Smith 2024 HockomockSports Boys Lacrosse Awards
Mansfield sophomore Nico Smith has been selected as the 2024 HockomockSports.com Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year. Smith had a breakout season for the Davenport division champion Hornets, also earning Hockomock League MVP and USA Lacrosse All-American honors.

Smith had a dominant season at the face-off ‘X’ and was a vital piece in Mansfield’s offense, which averaged a league-best 13.5 goals per game. Not only was Smith one of the top face-off specialists, he was one of the top two-way midfielders in the league. He finished this season with 62 goals, 34 assists, and 191 ground balls.

“Nico had such an impressive season, and he contributed at a high level in a variety of ways,” said HockomockSports.com Editor Ryan Lanigan. “It seemed like whenever the Hornets needed a spark, whether it was a face-off win or a big goal, Nico stepped up in the big moments.”

Smith made an immediate impact as a freshman last season and earned Hockomock League All Star honors. After helping the Hornets win their second straight Davenport title — the program’s first consecutive league titles since winning three in a row in 2005, 2006, and 2007 — Smith took on an even bigger role this year and led Mansfield to one of its best seasons ever, which culminated in a spot in the Division 2 state quarterfinals.

Smith is the first Mansfield player to earn HockomockSports Player of the Year, snapping a streak of seven straight Franklin players: Luke Davis (2022), Jacob Alexander (2019), Eric Civetti (2018 & 2017), Austin Kent (2016), and Jack Vail (2015 & 2014). Pat Ward of Canton was the inaugural winner in 2013.

Honorable Mentions: Donovan DeVellis (King Philip), Cole Hogencamp (Mansfield), Dylan Cummings (Sharon)

Please note that the HockomockSports.com awards are selected by our staff. They are completely separate from the Hockomock League All-Stars. Players are listed alphabetically by position.

HockomockSports First Team

Matt CorviMatt Corvi – Franklin – Goalie
Franklin senior Matt Corvi was stellar in the cage for the Panthers, who went undefeated against Hockomock League opponents and won their 11th straight Kelley-Rex division title. Committed to play at UMass Boston next year, Corvi kept Hockomock foes at bay — just two league teams scored over five goals against the Panthers — and denied some of the top offensive teams in the state with key saves. In 18.25 games played this year, Corvi made 223 saves for a 0.660 save percentage and 6.30 goals against average. “He came up huge for us in so many games during his career,” said Franklin head coach Lou Verrochi. “He will be missed and I hope he has a great career at UMass Boston.”

Zach BernsteinZach Bernstein – Sharon – Defense
Sharon junior Zach Bernstein was once again one of the top defenders in the Hockomock League. Bernstein earned all-league honors a year ago as a sophomore and had another stellar year for the Eagles this year, once again garnering Hock All Star status. The Eagles had one of the best defenses in the Hock, allowing just 5.3 goals per game, and Bernstein was a big part of that. “Zach was our defensive leader on the team,” said Sharon head coach Jon Shocket. “Zach always got the [opposing team’s] No. 1 player and did an amazing job of shutting them down. His size and speed make him fun to watch and he was voted a team captain for the 2025 season.”

Jake MarcellJake Marcell – Canton – Defense
Canton sophomore Jake Marcell had an impressive first year with the Bulldogs and was one of the top two-way players in the league. After transferring in during the school year, Marcell quickly established himself as one of the top defenders in the league and gave Canton a spark offensively with some timely — and powerful — goals. He finished the 2024 campaign with seven goals and 14 assists and was always tasked with defending the opposing team’s top player. “He is a beast,” said Canton head coach Tommy Galvin. “As a sophomore, he shut down many opposing teams’ top players and was a difference maker on offense as well, totaling 21 points for us. He played man-up, man-down, took some face-off wings in key spots, and helped in the clearing game.”

Drew McCarthyDrew McCarthy – Franklin – Defense
Franklin junior Drew McCarthy was a rock in the back for the Kelley-Rex division champion Panthers. After breaking onto the scene last year as a sophomore, McCarthy helped anchor one of the stingiest defensive units in the state — a group that allowed under seven goals per game throughout the 2024 campaign. Already committed to play at St. Michael’s College, McCarthy’s ability to shut down top attacking options helped Franklin win its 11th straight Kelley-Rex crown. “Drew and Flynn [Baker] are without a doubt the two best long poles we had this year and both are selected as captains for next year,” said Franklin head coach Lou Verrochi. “They are both excellent shutdown poles.”

Drew HansenDrew Hansen – Franklin – Midfield
Franklin senior Drew Hansen capped off a memorable career with the Panthers with another all-star season, helping the program win its 11th straight Kelley-Rex division title by going undefeated against Hock opponents. Hansen is a four-year player and never lost a Hockomock game in his career. The Quinnipiac University commit has been a vital piece in the midfield for the past four seasons, and this year he recorded 39 goals and 20 assists, one of four Panthers to eclipse the 50-point plateau for the season. “He’s a rare four-year player at Franklin and he had a great career for us,” said Franklin head coach Lou Verrochi.

Noah MinkwitzNoah Minkwitz – King Philip – Midfield
King Philip senior Noah Minkwitz had a terrific season in the midfield for the Warriors, who earned another state tournament appearance this spring. His physicality and powerful shot gave the Warriors a big advantage in the midfield, and he was able to make an impact on both ends of the field. In his four years playing for KP, he racked up 98 goals — including back-to-back 40-goal seasons — and 37 assists. “A very powerful and physical midfielder who has an excellent shot,” said King Philip head coach Hal Bean. “He is fast with a big dodging threat as well as his outside shooting capability.”

Eddie O'BrienEddie O’Brien – Franklin – Midfield
Franklin senior Eddie O’Brien was a vital piece in the Panthers’ lineup once again this season, earning Hockomock League All Star honors. After the Panthers lost the majority of its offensive production to graduation, O’Brien stepped up and had a terrific season and scored a team-high 50 goals this season. A team captain that was voted as team MVP, O’Brien finished second on the team in points with 61 points. “He’s a very tough north-south player,” said Franklin head coach Lou Verrochi. “He was our leading goal scorer and he’s committed to play at St. Anselm next year.”

Nico SmithNico Smith – Mansfield – Midfield
Mansfield sophomore Nico Smith had a breakout season and emerged as one of the best players in the entire state, earning HockomockSports Player of the Year (above) and Hockomock League MVP, as well as All-American status from USA Lacrosse. Not only was Smith one of the top face-off guys in the Hock, but he was a tremendous asset on the offensive end and came up with key goals. During the regular season, Smith was one of the top point producers in the league with 62 goals and 29 assists for a total of 91 points.

Donovan DeVellisDonovan DeVellis – King Philip – Attack
King Philip senior Donovan DeVellis wrapped up a tremendous career with the Warriors with a strong final spring, earning Hockomock League All Star status for the second straight season. He is one of the craftiest goal scorers in the league and he has a knack for finishing against tough defense. DeVellis, who is committed to play at Endicott College, finished the 2024 campaign with 50 goals and 31 assists for 81 points. For his career, he racked up 137 goals and 104 assists. “He is a very creative playmaker with exceptional talent,” said King Philip head coach Hal Bean. “Donovan makes split-second decisions that result in many scoring opportunities for his team.”

Dylan CummingsDylan Cummings – Sharon – Attack
Sharon senior Dylan Cummings completed his final year with the Eagles in style, helping the program finish second in the Davenport division and make the Division 2 Round of 16. Cummings has been one of the top point producers in the Hock over the last two seasons and was just one of a few players in the league to hit the 50-goal mark this year. He added 34 assists to finish with a team-high 84 points. “Our go-to player, he led our team in goals with 50 goals and was our rock on attack,” said Sharon head coach Jon Shocket. “He had the ability to get goals not only when we needed them, but when he was double and triple-teamed. Dylan was our team MVP this year.”

Cole HogencampCole Hogencamp – Mansfield – Attack
Mansfield freshman Cole Hogencamp made an immediate impact for the Hornets and quickly established himself as one of the top attackers in the Hockomock League. He was named an all star in just his first year and was a big reason why Mansfield averaged over 13 goals per game, which was best in the Hock. His size and speed made him competitive but his ability to find the net consistently separated him from the pack. He was among the league leaders during the regular season and led the Hornets with 65 goals, adding 36 assists, which was second on the team. He was also named HockomockSports Underclassman of the Year (below).

Lucas MattsonLucas Mattson – North Attleboro – FO
North Attleboro senior Lucas Mattson played a big role in helping the Rocketeers have a great season that resulted in a state tournament berth. Mattson was a huge spark for the offense, coming up with key draw wins at crucial times. His ability to win face-offs helped set the North Attleboro offense, which averaged over 11 goals per game, for success. On the season, he won 204 of the 322 face-offs he took, hitting at a 63.4% win success rate. “Mattson was a force for us all year,” said North Attleboro head coach Ryan Izzo. “His ability to win the possession is huge. He was a great leader for us this past season and he will certainly be missed when he heads off to UCF in the fall.”

HockomockSports Second Team

Harry WheatonHarry Wheaton – Attleboro – Goalie
Attleboro senior goalie Harry Wheaton was a major reason why the Bombardiers earned a spot in the Division 1 state tournament this fall. Wheaton capped a tremendous career with the Bombardiers, hitting a number of milestones along the way. A four-year starter in the cage, Wheaton recorded a Hockomock League-best 258 saves throughout the 2024 season. He was able to turn aside nearly 60% of the shots he faced, finishing with a 0.575 save percentage. Wheaton earned honorable mention for Hockomock League all star in three seasons, including each of the past two, and has earned high praise from opposing coaches throughout his tenure in net for the Bombardiers.

Flynn BakerFlynn Baker – Franklin – Defense
Franklin junior Flynn Baker helped make the Panthers one of the top defensive units in both the Hockomock League and the state this season. Baker was a rock in the back and helped keep the Franklin defense organized which translated to under seven goals a game against. With Baker playing a big role, the Panthers — who went undefeated against league opponents and won their 11th straight Kelley-Rex title — limited all but one league foe to six or fewer goals. “Drew [McCarthy] and Flynn are without a doubt the two best long poles we had this year and both are selected as captains for next year,” said Franklin head coach Lou Verrochi. “They are both excellent shutdown poles.”

Tyler DouglasTyler Douglas – King Philip – Defense
King Philip senior Tyler Douglas concluded a strong career with the Warriors by helping anchor a strong defensive group in the 2024 season. A three-year starter, Douglas was a veteran presence in the back and a team captain. The Warriors’ defense held opponents to under seven goals per game and held seven Hock foes to six or fewer goals. He had 35 takeaways and 44 ground balls in his final year with King Philip. “Tyler always had the toughest defensive assignment,” said King Philip head coach Hal Bean. “He is fast with complete body control and a very deliberate and accurate stick check. He anticipates well and positionally is always in the right place at the right time.”

Cole GibsonCole Gibson – Mansfield – Defense
Mansfield sophomore Cole Gibson had a breakout year for the Hornets, who won their second straight Davenport division title. It marked the first time in nearly two decades that the Hornets won consecutive league titles. Gibson was one of the key pieces in the Mansfield defense and was a reliable option for head coach Tim Frias. The LSM had a knack for coming up with big turnovers in key moments and helped the Hornets, who reached the MIAA Division 2 state quarterfinals, transition from defense to their dangerous offense.

Ryan CotterRyan Cotter – Foxboro – Midfield
Foxboro senior Ryan Cotter had a terrific senior year and was a key piece in the midfield for first-year head coach Greg Keefe. On top of the leadership he provided both on and off of the field, Cotter was a strong two-way player for the Warriors, making key plays both offensively and defensively. He came up with key goals throughout the season, finishing his final year with 34 goals and 20 assists. “He’s one of the most coachable players I’ve had the pleasure of coaching,” Keefe said. “A true leader on and off the field. Ryan does whatever is asked of him. He will do what is needed for the good of the team.”

Andrew SchmidtAndrew Schmidt – North Attleboro – Midfield
North Attleboro junior Andrew Schmidt enjoyed an impressive junior campaign, helping the Rocketeers return to the state tournament. With just four seniors on the roster, the Rocketeers relied mainly on juniors and sophomores to navigate through a difficult schedule, which featured wins over league rivals King Philip, Foxboro, and an overtime thriller at Canton. Schmidt finished as the leading scorer for North Attleboro with a balanced approach, scoring 31 goals and registering a team-best 34 assists for 65 points. “Schmidt is a great player for us,” said North Attleboro head coach Ryan Izzo. “He had consistently steady numbers throughout the season and led our team in points. He was also chosen to be a captain for the 2025 season.”

Jason StokesJason Stokes – Milford – Midfield
Milford sophomore Jason Stokes was a major spark for the Scarlet Hawks, who had their best season since joining the Hockomock League over a decade ago. Stokes was a strong two-way player as he was all over the field, making plays on both ends. He was also a massive source of offense for Milford, who not only reached the state tournament but won their first game. Stokes played well in both tournament games with 11 points, including five against #6 Billerica, and finished with 49 goals and 41 assists for the season. “Jason had a breakout sophomore season,” said Milford head coach Austin Costa. “He’s an explosive athlete that played both sides of the ball as a midfielder and initiated our offense from up top. His unselfish play led to a very balanced stat line and he performed best in the big games. Jason has been an integral part of Milford’s growth over the past two years and his work ethic in games has been program changing.”

Jordan WeismanJordan Weisman – Sharon – Midfield
Sharon senior Jordan Weisman has a terrific final year playing in the midfield for the Eagles, who reached the MIAA Division 2 Round of 16 and took second place in the Davenport division. A strong two-way player, Weisman made an impact on both ends of the field. He was a big help on the defensive end for an Eagles’ defense that allowed a league-low 5.7 goals per game and played a crucial role on the offensive end. On top of his 26 goals, Weisman’s vision and willingness to set up teammates helped the Sharon offense average over a dozen goals per game and he finished with a team-high 37 assists. “Our on-field general, Jordan led our midfield in points, with his greatest attribute his ability to draw and dump to all of our shooters,” said Sharon head coach Jon Shocket. “He led our team with 37 assists and was a vital part of our success.”

Andrew DeGirolamoAndrew DeGirolamo – Mansfield – Attack
Mansfield sophomore Andrew DeGirolamo enjoyed a second straight successful campaign with the Hornets. After breaking onto the scene last year as a rookie with over 50 points, DeGirolamo was a key piece in Mansfield’s dangerous attack — which averaged a league-best 13.5 goals per game in 22 contests. The Hornets had a lot of options this year and DeGirolamo was a big piece in connecting it all together with his vision and willingness to make the extra pass. He recorded a team-best 45 assists and was also a threat to go at goal, finishing with 36 goals.

Lincoln MooreLincoln Moore – Foxboro – Attack
Foxboro senior Lincoln Moore completed his career in style, finishing among the league leaders in both goals and assists for a Warriors squad that made a playoff run to the Division 3 quarterfinals. Moore, who was the 2022 HockomockSports.com Underclassman, made his return after missing nearly all of last season due to injury. He picked up right where he left off as one of the most dangerous and physical attackers in the league, finishing with 65 goals and 16 assists. “The heart and soul of the 2024 Foxboro boys’ team,” said Foxboro head coach Greg Keefe. “With the game on the line, Lincoln wants the ball and will put his body on the line to get to the cage to get the look he needs to score a goal. It will be extremely difficult to replace him and his offensive output over the next season.”

Brendan TourgeeBrendan Tourgee – Canton – Attack
One of the most successful Canton athletes over the past four years, senior three-sport standout Brendan Tourgee put a bow on his high school career with yet another all star season. A two-time all star and one-time honorable mention in hockey and a two-time honorable mention for golf, Tourgee earned his first all star selection for boys lacrosse after spearheading the Bulldogs to a second place in the Davenport and a state tournament berth. He led Canton this season with 34 goals and was among the league leaders with 43 assists. “He’s an offensive leader that had to adapt and play a new position and with new players,” said Canton head coach Tommy Galvin. “He led the team in points, had some huge games for us, and was our go-to guy. His OT goal against Sharon and OT winning assist against KP were two of my favorite plays from the season.”

Max EaglesMax Eagles – Canton – FO
Canton junior Max Eagles played a vital role in helping the Bulldogs battle to a second-place finish in the Davenport and a spot in the state tournament. Eagles’ success at the faceoff ‘X’ was a major reason why Canton was able to compete at a high level. Against some of the top competition around, Eagles came up with key wins at key times and finished the season winning 73% of his draws. “Max was a difference maker for our team,” said Canton head coach Tommy Galvin. “Possession is so important in lacrosse and we are fortunate to have Max taking our draws and getting us those extra possessions, especially late in games. We do not have the success we had this season without him.”

2024 HockomockSports Boys Lacrosse Awards
Mansfield freshman Cole Hogencamp has been selected as the 2024 HockomockSports.com Boys Lacrosse Underclassman of the Year. Hogencamp made his presence known in his first year as one of the Hockomock League’s leading scorers and was named a Hockomock League All Star.

Hogencamp, who was also selected to the HockomockSports.com First Team, was one of the most dangerous players in the attacking zone for the Hornets, who won their second consecutive Davenport division title and went 19-3 overall after making a run to the Division 2 state quarterfinals.

“Despite being just a freshman, Cole looked like a seasoned veteran in the attack for the Hornets and it didn’t take long for opponents to realize how dangerous he was,” said HockomockSports.com Editor Ryan Lanigan. “Game after game, he was a reliable option and came up with some pretty timely and important goals throughout the season.”

Hogencamp was the only player in the entire Hockomock League to break the 100-point plateau during the regular season, registering a league-high 65 goals and 36 assists, which was second on Mansfield. He was the Hornets’ leading scorer in each playoff game, including five goals in the opener against Tantasqua and a hat trick in the wild comeback win over Westwood.

Hogencamp is the first freshman to win the award in its nine-year existence and the first Mansfield player to earn the honor. Previous winners include Foxboro’s Lincoln Moore (2022), Franklin’s Matt Lazzaro (2019), Jacob Alexander (2017), Eric Civetti (2016), and Mike Sullivan (2013), King Philip’s Paul Macrina (2015) and Johnny Piatelli (2014), and North Attleboro’s Andy DeMattio (2018).

Honorable Mentions: Mason Thompson (King Philip), Jason Stokes (Milford), Andrew DeGirolamo (Mansfield)

Coach of the Year – Tim Frias, Mansfield

Tim Frias 2024 HockomockSports Boys Lacrosse AwardsMansfield head coach Tim Frias has been named the 2024 HockomockSports.com Boys Lacrosse Coach of the Year after leading the Hornets to a second straight Davenport division title, the first time the program has won consecutive titles in over a decade.

“It’s not easy to replace the production the Hornets lost between graduation and injury, especially in what was probably the most competitive Davenport division we’ve seen in a while,” said HockomockSports.com Editor Ryan Lanigan. “Coach Frias quickly integrated some talented new pieces and the Hornets established themselves as a top team in Division 2.”

The Hornets posted a 19-3 record this season, with the three losses coming to Cohasset (D4 state quarterfinalist), Franklin (12-10, Kelley-Rex champions), and Hingham (D2 state semifinalists). Mansfield statistically had the league’s best offense with over 13 goals per game and had a balanced attack with sophomores Nico Smith and Andrew DeGirolamo along with freshman Cole Hogencamp all garnering HockomockSports.com honors.

This is the second time that Frias has been selected for this award, with his first win coming in 2016, and he joins Franklin’s Lou Verrochi (2022, 2015) and North Attleboro’s Kevin Young (2022, 2017) as the only two-time winners. Other previous winners include Foxboro’s Matt Noone (2018), Sharon’s Patrick Kelley (2014), and Canton’s Bill Bendell (2013).

Honorable Mentions: Jon Shocket (Sharon), Lou Verrochi (Franklin), Tommy Galvin (Canton)
