David Stapleton
Oliver Ames senior David Stapleton has been named the second annual HockomockSports.com Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Stapleton was also voted Hockomock League MVP by the coaches and was named an All-New England player by the Eastern Massachusetts Soccer Coaches Association.

Stapleton finished the season with 11 goals and seven assists to tie for the lead league in points. His 11 goals was the second most in the entire league and his seven assists tied for third most with two other players.

“David is one of the most versatile and talented players, not only in the league, but in the entire state,” said HockomockSports.com Editor-in-Chief Ryan Lanigan. “He’s arguably the last person in the league that you want to give a set-piece to in the attacking third, not only for his scoring ability, but because of his vision.”

Stapleton’s depth has proved to be key in his year’s playing at Oliver Ames, being able to move up top, to the outside mid, to center back depending on where he was needed. He helped lead Oliver Ames to a 11-0-5 undefeated regular season and then to three playoff wins and to the program’s first ever Division 2 South Finals.

Opposing coaches were well aware of the talent level that Stapleton had, including Milford head coach Jim Asam.

“Whether coming from the back, middle or top of the field, whenever Dave would get the ball on his foot you knew big things were going to happen,” Asam said.

Stapleton is the second Oliver Ames player to win the HockomockSports.com Player of the Year as former goalie David MacKinnon won the Davenport Player of the Year in 2012.

Joe Kellett

King Philip sophomore midfielder/forward Joe Kellett has been named the second annual HockomockSports.com Boys Soccer Underclassman of the Year. The award is given out to the top freshman or sophomore player from the past season. Kellett was apart of a Warrior team that went 9-7-2, helping King Philip to three more wins than last season.

Kellett scored six goals and added eight assists for a total of 14 points, which put him in a tie for third most points overall. His eight assists were second most in the entire league.

“Joe is a well-rounded, composed and hard-working player who played primarily in the advanced midfield and forward positions this year as a sophomore,” King Philip head coach Kip Lewis said. “His high work rate combined with the ability to hold the ball with both feet while finding the right passes made him a key focus for our attack.”

Kellett tallied two assists in the Warrior’s big 5-1 upset of Attleboro that qualified King Philip for the tournament. He then scored both of KP’s goals in a road game at Stoughton, helping his team to a 2-1 win.

Lewis also credited Kellett with assists that weren’t tallied, saying he factored in on the majority in the team’s goals, usually unlocking the player who did tally the assist.

“His attitude is contagious and he sets his bar of expectation high,” Lewis said. “He brings a drive and determination to trainings which helped him gain the support of our program to be selected as captain for his upcoming junior year.”

Honorable Mention: Loubensky Lucas, Stoughton. Devante Teixeira, Foxboro.

John Barata Oliver Ames head coach John Barata has been  selected as the 2013 HockomockSports.com Boys  Soccer Coach of the Year. It’s the second year in a  row that Barata has been selected for this award.

The Tigers reached the D2 South Finals for the first time in program history just two years removed from their first ever appearance in the South Semifinals.
