Walsh finished the regular season with 14 goals and 11 points for a league-best 25 points. Her 14 goals were tied for second most in the league and her 11 assists were tied for the highest. Walsh was a big reason why the Panthers repeated as Kelley-Rex division champions.

Campbell had 11 shutouts this season in 21 games and played all 1,300 minutes in those games. She saved 130 of 143 shots that she faced with a goals against average of only 0.619. King Philip coach Liz Hathaway said, “Abby is a very talented and knowledgeable high school field hockey goalie who works extremely hard at her game and is very passionate about the sport.”

Julia EzepikJulia Ezepik – Canton – Defense
Canton senior Julia Ezepik made plays all over the field for the Bulldogs in 2016. Ezepik anchored a defense that allowed just 14 goals all season – second least among Hockomock teams. She also contributed to the offensive end, coming up the field on corners. The senior finished with five goals and seven assists for the season. “Julia stepped up on and off the field this season. We relied on her for not only her defense but on most corner plays as well. She was a steady force for us all season,” Canton head coach Chrissy O’Connor said.

Kayla MarshallKayla Marshall – Franklin – Defense
Franklin senior Kayla Marshall helped guide the Panthers to their second straight Kelley-Rex division title in 2016. In her third year starting for the Panthers, Marshall was very effective from her role in the middle of the field. She also chipped in offensively with a pair of goals and one assist for three points.”A three year starter and senior captain, Kayla provided the type of leadership both on and of the field that we needed this season from her center midfield position by distributing the ball effectively to our offense and cutting off opposing players before they could counter attack,” Franklin head coach Lisa Cropper said.

Jen McCabeJen McCabe – Mansfield – Defense
Mansfield senior Jen McCabe was the rock at the back for the Hornets this year, controlling the center of the defensive zone and limiting opponents to only 20 goals on the season (nine of which came in a two-game period early in the season). McCabe also created attacks from the defensive circle and finished the season with a pair of assists and also had two goal line clearances. Mansfield coach Theresa Nyhan said, “Jen’s ability to tackle and win the ball outside the circle is one reason for our defensive success. She is vocal, an excellent field communicator. She knows how to draw the attackers in and at the right moment, tackle and win the ball.”

Angela ConnollyAngela Connolly – Stoughton – Midfield
Stoughton senior Angela Connolly was a rock in the midfield for the Black Knights again this season. After garnering Hockomock League MVP honors in 2015, the Northeastern commit was again a force for Stoughton. Connolly spent the 2016 with a defense first approach, helping a young Black Knights squad qualify for the state tournament. She finished with one goal and three assists on the season. “We had an inexperienced goalie and defense so Angela focused more on defense for us,” Stoughton head coach Dan Mark said.

Emma DalyEmma Daly – Foxboro – Midfield
Foxboro senior Emma Daly was a constant threat for the Warriors on the right side of midfield, pushing the tempo and creating scoring chances for herself and her teammates. Daly was the team’s second leading scorer, behind only her sister Lily, with nine goals and four assists and helped Foxboro win its first league title since 2005 and the program’s first ever Div. 2 South title. Foxboro coach Melissa Bordieri said, “She had an awesome ability to get the ball into the circle and draw corners…Emma did a great job of working the ball on our right side and generating offense.”

Dimitra EfremidisDimitra Efremidis – Oliver Ames – Midfield
Oliver Ames senior Dimitra Efremidis was all over the field for the Tigers. Whether it was on the offensive end or defensive end, Efremidis seemed to always be involved in the play somehow. The senior was a catalyst in OA’s attack, often transitioning the team from defense to offense. She led the Tigers with a team-high 10 goals and eight assists. “Dimitra was one of our go-to players in the midfield this year with her aerial shot on corners being a huge threat to other teams,” Oliver Ames head coach Abby Tepper said.

Cassi RonanCassi Ronan – Franklin – Midfield
Franklin sophomore Cassi Ronan paced the Panthers to another Kelley-Rex division title this season. Playing both in the midfield and at forward, Ronan did a lot of the dirty work that didn’t show up in the box score. Ronan finished with 10 goals and seven assists. “She didn’t always get on the stat sheet, but was quite often the player creating offensive opportunities the rest of our team. Cassi was our ‘QB’ on offensive corners, often a key part of defensive corners, and constantly kept opponents off balance with her tricky stick work, speed, and passing,” Franklin head coach Lisa Cropper said.

Caitlin WhitmanCaitlin Whitman – Mansfield – Midfield
Mansfield senior midfielder Caitlin Whitman was a strong two-way force in the middle for the Hornets this season, as they made the tournament and advanced to the second round after a big win over Nauset, which included Whitman’s penalty stroke goal. Whitman was one of the top creators for Mansfield this season and finished with seven goals and 13 assists from midfield. Mansfield coach Theresa Nyhan said, “Caitlin uses her speed to her advantage. She will not dazzle with strong pulls yet eliminates players with a change of speed. She has a nose for the goal and is good at finishing a play and shooting at speed.”

After being named HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year a year ago, Walsh was named the 2016 HockomockSports.com Field Hockey Player of the Year (see above). HockomockSports.com Second Team

Kelli McCarthyKelli McCarthy – Foxboro – Goalie
Foxboro junior goalie Kelli McCarthy was the backstop for a Warriors defense that pushed the program to a historic Div. 2 South title and its first league title since 2005. For her strong season in between the pipes and importance to the Foxboro defensive effort, McCarthy was named the league MVP by the Hockomock coaches. McCarthy finished with 115 saves this season and had 15 shutouts in 23 games and only allowed 13 goals. Foxboro coach Melissa Bordieri said, “Kelli is such a fast, smart and aggressive goalie. When she’s not stopping shots, she is like a defensive coordinator talking constantly to her backs on the field.”

Katie DavenportKatie Davenport – Oliver Ames – Defense
Oliver Ames senior Katie Davenport was the backbone of the Tigers’ defense this season. In one of the most competitive divisions in the entire state, Davenport patrolled the center of the field and helped Oliver Ames record an impressive nine shutouts. Davenport started in all 20 of the Tigers’ games this season. “Katie was a huge leader for us on our defense, she is extremely smart and always anticipated and intercepted passes in our defensive circle,” Oliver Ames head coach Abby Tepper said.

Mary KummerMary Kummer – North Attleboro – Defense
North Attleboro senior Mary Kummer had a standout season for the Red Rocketeers. In her third year on varsity, Kummer was an anchor on the back line for Karen Folan’s squad, who came up just shy of a postseason berth. Kummer not only did well to position herself but had strong marking skills and came away with possession after challenging for the ball. The senior helped Big Red turn defense into offense as well, getting the attack going from the defensive circle. Kummer was also selected as a Hockomock League All Star by the coaches.

Kate MorseKate Morse – Franklin – Defense
Franklin junior Kate Morse made life difficult for opposing offenses from her center back spot for the Kelley-Rex winning Panthers. While Morse sometimes worked her way up the field, finding the back of the net twice and notching four assists, she made the biggest difference defensively. She finished the season with four goal-saving stops herself after opponents had beat the goalie. “Just a junior, Kate took over the reins at center back this season and really anchored our defense along by making several key defensive saves behind our goalkeeper throughout the season,” Franklin head coach Lisa Cropper said.

Emily CampbellEmily Campbell – Canton – Midfield
Canton junior Emily Campbell was a versatile option for the Bulldogs this season. Playing both defense and midfield, Campbell offered a variety of skills for head coach Chrissy O’Connor. She was a part of a Canton defense that surrendered just 14 goals all season long. Offensively, she was top five on the team in points with three goals and seven assists. “Emily could be utilized in many positions on the field. She played great defense for us because that is where she was needed but her talent with lifts and her tenacious play could have her seeing more midfield action in the future,” O’Connor said.

Kendall CliffordKendall Clifford – Oliver Ames – Midfield
Oliver Ames senior Kendall Clifford made a big impact on the field for the Tigers in 2016. The senior provided an attacking option for the Tigers on the outside and was able to set teammates up with her passing. She finished with six goals and six assists for the Tigers, who qualified for the state tournament yet again this year. “Kendall was key for us as a right midfielder setting up our forwards and she has a very strong drive on net which helped generate a lot of our offense,” Oliver Ames head coach Abby Tepper said.

Meredith CroninMeredith Cronin – Foxboro – Midfield
Foxboro senior Meredith Cronin was a solid two-way player for the Warriors this season, creating offense in transition and also being the first line of defense in the middle of the field. Cronin was named a league all-star for helping the Warriors win their first league title since 2005 and first ever sectional title. She scored six goals and an assist and was one of 15 players from the Div. 1 and Div. 2 South to be chosen for the Best of 60 All-Star Game. Foxboro coach Melissa Bordieri said, “Mere is one of the most athletic, and fastest players I’ve coached. She is such a versatile, all-around player being a major threat in both ends of the field.”

Christina HathawayChristina Hathaway – King Philip – Midfield
King Philip junior Christina Hathaway made an impact for the Warriors on both ends of the field, as a strong presence in the heart of the KP defense and racing forward in transition or off set pieces in the attacking zone. Hathaway finished the season with three goals and six assists, including the crucial pass to set up the overtime game-winner against Canton in the tournament. She then scored the winning stroke to beat Somerset-Berkeley in the next round. KP coach Liz Hathaway said, “She is a terrific leader and total team player. She is very athletic and she makes an impact all over the field.”

Caroline LounsburyCaroline Lounsbury – Franklin – Midfield
Franklin senior Caroline Lounsbury was truly a versatile option the Kelley-Rex division winning Panthers. Throughout the 2016 season, Lounsbury played all over the field – making an impact wherever she played. She recorded five goals and two assists on the season for Franklin. “A senior captain who played effectively and without complaint at midfield, forward, or back on defense depending on whatever the situation called for,” Franklin head coach Lisa Cropper said. “Caroline was our most versatile and unselfish player.”

Emily IerardoEmily Ierardo – Mansfield – Forward
Mansfield junior Emily Ierardo was a versatile weapon for the Hornets this fall, playing five different positions in the forward and midfield areas and being one of Mansfield’s leading scorers. The speedy Ierardo finished the season with nine goals and six assists, despite being moved around the field and at times being counted on to drop back and provide a shield for the defense. Mansfield coach Theresa Nyhan said, “Emily has amazing eye and hand (or shall I say stick) coordination. Defensively she stops every ball hit at her. Offensively she is a huge threat. She is so quick – she releases the ball quickly, disguising her shot.”

Maggie MalloyMaggie Malloy – Canton – Forward
Canton sophomore Maggie Malloy made a big splash for the Bulldogs during the 2016 season. In her first year playing field hockey, Malloy finished as the league’s top goal scorer with an impressive 16 goals. The Bulldogs improved their scoring as a team by a dozen from last year with Malloy playing a big role. The sophomore finished with 17 points on the season. “Maggie picked up a field hockey stick for the first time this season. She improved every game and led the league in goals. She has a knack for scoring and we look forward to having her returning next season.”

Alli MeehanAlli Meehan – King Philip – Forward
Another outstanding underclassman to step up this season, King Philip sophomore Alli Meehan was one of the top scorers for the Warriors and her emergence helped KP stay in the league title race to the final game of the regular season and reach the Div. 1 South semifinal. Meehan scored 14 goals and recorded 11 assists this fall, including the critical assist to Caitlin Donahue that forced overtime against Somerset-Berkeley. King Philip coach Liz Hathaway said, “Alli is a hard working player who as a sophomore has elevated her game. I can’t wait to see her growth as a player and athlete when she is a junior and senior.”

Lily Daly

Foxboro sophomore forward Lily Daly was selected as the 2016 HockomockSports.com Field Hockey Underclassman of the Year. For the second season in a row, Daly was the leading scorer for the Warriors and one of the main reasons that Foxboro won the Davenport division title and its first ever Div. 2 South crown as well.

Daly was a dominant force in front of the net with 16 goals and 11 assists this fall, as the Warriors ended an 11-year drought between league titles. Daly also scored the game-winning goal in overtime of the South semifinal to eliminate Cohasset and keep the Foxboro run to a trophy going.

“Lily definitely knows how to finish a play,” said Foxboro coach Melissa Bordieri. “She has a great game sense and intuition…and knows how to score. Lily moves the ball well and is so strong on the left side.”

HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry said, “You always have to keep an eye on Lily when Foxboro has possession because she moves well and seems to always be in the right place to take advantage of scoring chances. Just her presence on the left forces defenses to shift and opens space for her teammates.”

Daly is the first Foxboro player to be selected as the Underclassman of the Year for field hockey (sixth Foxboro player across all sports) and the second player in the three years that it has been given to come from the Davenport division (Hannah Friend of Oliver Ames in 2014). Each of the previous two recipients of this award went on to win Player of the Year as well.

Honorable Mention: Maggie Malloy (Canton), Cassie Ronan (Franklin), Alli Meehan (King Philip)
