2017 HockomockSports Field Hockey Awards
 
King Philip senior Christina Hathaway has been selected as the 2017 HockomockSports.com Field Hockey Player of the Year. The defender was an all-around standout for the Warriors this season, both as one of the primary defensive players and as the team’s second leading scorer. Hathaway was also selected as the Hockomock MVP by the league’s coaches.

Hathaway finished the season tied for second on the Warriors with 23 points. The University of New Hampshire-commit scored 12 goals and recorded 11 assists from the KP back line and was integral to everything that KP did on both ends of the field, helping the Warriors win the Hockomock League title for the first time since 2008.

“Christina is a tenacious defender and a great all around athlete with great field presence,” said King Philip coach Liz Hathaway. “She is a strong leader and player who possesses a wide variety of skills.”

Hathaway also had the responsibility for most of the team’s free hits and was regularly involved in the Warriors corner routines. She was also a vocal leader on the field, which helped KP make an impressive run to the Div. 1 South title for the first time in program history, capped by a 1-0 shutout of top seed and previously unbeaten Somerset-Berkeley.

“It was impossible not to notice Christina when watching the Warriors this season,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “She was everywhere on the field and always seemed to be around the ball, whether on offense or defense. Christina made everything click for the league’s top team.”

Hathaway is the first King Philip field hockey player to be named Player of the Year and the the third straight selection from the Kelley-Rex division, following Mansfield’s Caroline Maher (2015) and Franklin’s Annie Walsh (2016).

Abby CampbellAbby Campbell – King Philip – Goalie
King Philip senior goalie Abby Campbell was once again a standout between the pipes for the Warriors and for the second year in a row named to the HockomockSports.com First Team. The Stonehill College-commit made 105 saves in 23 games this season, allowing only 0.58 goals per game, and recording 14 shutouts this fall. The Warriors won the league title and the program’s first Div. 1 South title. KP coach Liz Hathaway said, “Abby is a terrific goalie and is the leader of our defense. She has been a strong mentor to the younger goalies in our program and she is passionate about the sport!”

 


Emily CampbellEmily Campbell – Canton – Defense
Canton senior Emily Campbell was a strong defensive presence in the midfield for the Bulldogs and helped lead the Bulldogs to their first Davenport division championship since 2013 and a run to the Div. 1 South semifinal to face top seed Somerset-Berkeley. Campbell was used in multiple positions this season and was a consistent performer for the Bulldogs to help provide a defensive foundation for Canton, which allowed the third-fewest goals (24) in the league this season. Canton coach Chrissy O’Connor said of Campbell, “[Emily was] utilized all over the field in many capacities due to her athletic play and skill.”

 


Christina HathawayChristina Hathaway – King Philip – Defense
King Philip senior defender Christina Hathaway was a standout on both ends of the field for the Warriors this season, leading KP to a league title and to a Div. 1 South title. Hathaway, a University of New Hampshire-commit, was tied as the team’s second-leading scorer with 12 goals and 11 assists this season, as the Warriors led the league in goals scored (86) and fewest goals allowed (13). The 2017 Player of the Year (see above) was also the main weapon for KP on restarts and corners. KP coach Liz Hathaway said, “Christina is a tenacious defender and a great all around athlete with great field presence.”

 


Emilie PothierEmilie Pothier – North Attleboro – Defense
North Attleboro senior Emilie Pothier gave the Rocketeers a strong two-way presence in midfield, helping North finish third in the Davenport division and return to the postseason this fall. Pothier scored one goal and recorded three assists and was selected as a Hockomock all-star by the league’s coaches. More than her scoring, Pothier helped North by adding to the defensive effort from midfield. North coach Karen Folan said, “Emilie has great game sense. She is a consistent player who guided our play at center midfield this season. Her endurance to stay in the circle with the offense and also moving back to mark on defense was amazing.”

 


Sophia DiCensoSophia DiCenso – Foxboro – Midfield
Foxboro junior Sophia DiCenso has turned into as successful a playmaker in field hockey as she is in lacrosse, providing 18 goals and 12 assists for the Warriors to keep them in the race for back-to-back league titles right up to the final game of the regular season and to get them back to the Div. 2 South semifinal. Her partnership with classmate Lily Daly was one of the most prolific combos in the Hockomock. Foxboro coach Melissa Bordieri said of DiCenso, “Sophia has some of the best stick skills in the league without a doubt. Her poise with the ball and ability to beat a defender are amazing.”

 


Ann MaherAnn Maher – Mansfield – Midfield
Mansfield senior Ann Maher was a constant menace from the left side of the Hornets midfield, both adding to the strong Mansfield offense and also dropping back into the defense to break up opposition attacks. Maher scored seven goals and recorded nine assists for the Hornets this year and the Hornets offense consistently ran through her this season as Mansfield returned to the postseason and tied for third in the Kelley-Rex. Mansfield coach Theresa Nyhan said of Maher, “Ann was our play-maker! She has wonderful field vision and created opportunities for her teammates on both ends of the field! Always the team leader!”

 


Andrea McNeilAndrea McNeil – Canton – Midfield
Canton senior forward Andrea McNeil helped the Bulldogs clinch a league title for the first time since 2013, wrapping up her four-year varsity career by scoring 20 goals and adding nine assists for the Davenport division champions. With McNeil leading the way, Canton made a run to the Div. 1 South semifinal where it took top seed Somerset-Berkeley to overtime and she was selected as a Hockomock all-star by the league’s coaches. Canton coach Chrissy O’Connor said of McNeil, “Excellent stick handling skills and endurance, Andrea was a big part of Canton’s success this season.”

 


Cassi RonanCassi Ronan – Franklin – Midfield
Franklin junior Cassi Ronan was the standout performer for the Panthers this fall and helped the team bounce back from a difficult start to the season to finish second in the Kelley-Rex division and take league champ King Philip to double overtime in the second round of the state tournament. Ronan scored 20 goals and recorded 10 assists this year for Franklin, both team highs, and was a constant menace in the Panthers attack. Franklin coach Lisa Cropper said, “Cassi really stepped up as an outstanding leader both on and off the field as a junior captain, leading us in scoring as well as controlling the game all over the field.”

 


Sarah StevensSarah Stevens – Oliver Ames – Midfield
Oliver Ames senior Sarah Stevens had a strong senior season to lead the Tigers to another postseason berth and third-place tie in the competitive Kelley-Rex division. Stevens was second on the team with 12 points, scoring four goals and recording eight assists, while adding a strong defensive presence to the OA midfield. Stevens was also selected to play in the Best of 60 all-star game by the state coaches association. OA coach Abby Tepper said, “She was one of our main hitters on corners and knew how to set her teammates up for success. She was a leader for us and a role model to younger players.”

 


Lily DalyLily Daly – Foxboro – Forward
Foxboro junior forward Lily Daly was the top scorer for the Warriors for the third straight season, helping them finish just two points shy of back-to-back Davenport division titles and get back to the Div. 2 South semifinal, before a one-goal loss to the top seed Dennis-Yarmouth. Daly scored 26 goals and recorded 14 assists in another standout attacking season. Foxboro coach Melissa Bordieri said, “Lily is such an awesome offensive threat for us, particularly inside the circle. Her ability to get open and put the ball in the net is fantastic…she definitely knows how to finish in the circle.”

 


Maggie MalloyMaggie Malloy – Canton – Forward
Canton junior forward Maggie Malloy stepped onto the field hockey team last year and made an instant impact on the Bulldogs attack and she continued that success this fall, leading the team in scoring. Malloy had 27 goals and eight assists this fall, as Canton took home the Davenport division title for first time in four years and reached the Div. 1 South semifinal before an overtime loss to top seed Somerset-Berkeley. She was selected as a league all-star for the second straight year. Canton coach Chrissy O’Connor said, “[She’s] a tenacious player with a knack for scoring… she is very dangerous inside the circle.”

 


Alli MeehanAlli Meehan – King Philip – Forward
King Philip junior forward Alli Meehan is one of the most talented attackers in the Hockomock League and she put together a stellar regular season with 40 points, including more than 20 goals, despite missing a few games to injury. With Meehan leading the attack, the Warriors scored a league-best 86 goals this season on their way to a league title and an impressive run to the state semifinal. KP coach Liz Hathaway said, “Alli possesses great speed and ball control skills moving the ball up the field and into the attacking circle and she is able to finish in front of the net.”

 


HockomockSports.com Second Team


Riley BrownRiley Brown – Canton – Goalie
Canton senior goalie Riley Brown put together a standout season in goal for the Bulldogs, her first season as a starter, helping them win the Davenport division title for the first time since 2013 and reach the Div. 1 South semifinal where they took top seed Somerset-Berkeley to overtime. The Merrimack College-commit allowed 1.09 goals per game and recorded five shutouts this season as Canton boasted the third best defense in the league, allowing only 24 goals this year. Canton coach Chrissy O’Connor said of Brown, “A physical presence in goal, Riley proved to be among the top goalies in the league.”

 


Nicole BerlutiNicole Berluti – Mansfield – Defense
Mansfield senior defender Nicole Berluti was a rock at the back for the Hornets this fall and helped them secure a tie for third in the Kelley-Rex division and book a place in the state tournament. Berluti’s quickness and ability to read the game allowed her to consistently break up opponents attacks and she was selected as a Hockomock all-star by the league’s coaches. Mansfield coach Theresa Nyhan said of Berluti, “Nicole is a formidable defender! Her understanding of the game, combined with her speed, footwork and tackling ability allow her to compete with the best offensive players in the league!”

 


Emma IzydorczakEmma Izydorczak – King Philip – Defense
King Philip junior defender Emma Izydorczak was a standout in the back line for the league’s best defensive unit, showing off great timing in making tackles and always seeming to be in the right place at the right time, including several clutch goal line clearances for the Kelley-Rex division and Div. 1 South champions. Izydorczak was a key piece in a rock-solid defense that allowed only 13 goals in 23 games this season and totaled 14 shutouts. King Philip coach Liz Hathaway said of Izydorczak, “Emma has worked very hard at her game and it shows, she is a strong and talented defender.”

 


Maeve LedwithMaeve Ledwith – Franklin – Defense
Franklin sophomore Maeve Ledwith emerged as a standout defensive player for the Panthers this season, filling a much-needed opening in the back line caused by graduation and injuries. Ledwith showed off her quickness and a strong ability to read the game to help Franklin’s defense improve over the course of the season and push the Panthers to second place in the Kelley-Rex division and the second round of the state tournament. Franklin coach Lisa Cropper said of Ledwith, “Just a sophomore, Maeve was our most dynamic defensive player with speed to burn, and outstanding tackling skills.”

 


Jackie BrionJackie Brion – Foxboro – Midfield
Foxboro senior midfielder Jackie Brion was a critical player for the Warriors, controlling the middle of the field, breaking up opponents’ attacks, and transitioning the Warriors into the attack. Brion scored two goals and recorded five assists this fall, but it was her work on the defensive side of the game that made her stand out and allowed the Warriors attack to flourish. Foxboro coach Melissa Bordieri said, “Jackie was a major part of both our offense and defense this season because she controlled the middle of the field exceptionally well with her speed, great stick work, and keen field awareness.”

 


Kaley GormanKaley Gorman – North Attleboro – Midfield
North Attleboro senior Kaley Gorman was the leading scorer for the Rocketeers and helped North return to the postseason in third place in the Davenport division. Gorman scored eight goals and recorded 11 assists in her third season on the varsity team and first season as a center forward after spending two in the center of the midfield. North Attleboro coach Karen Folan said of Gorman, “Kaley found her home this season at center forward. Her aggressive yet precise stick work helped Kaley to find the back of the net often this season.” Gorman was also selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches.

 


Kaitlyn GoyetchKaitlyn Goyetch – Canton – Midfield
Canton sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Goyetch started for the second straight season for the Bulldogs and helped them get back on top in the Davenport division for the first time since 2013 and reach the Div. 1 South semifinal. Goyetch scored 12 goals and recorded seven assists this fall and was selected as the HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year (see below) for her performance. Canton coach Chrissy O’Connor said of Goyetch, “Kaitlyn is a solid player that we count on to distribute the ball in the midfield. She played an outstanding postseason scoring in each of the postseason games.”

 


Grace MayerGrace Mayer – Attleboro – Midfield
Attleboro senior Grace Mayer was a standout for the Bombardiers this season, providing 14 goals and six assists despite Attleboro’s struggles this fall. Mayer was an all-around consistent performer for the Bombardiers, leading the attack and also helping the team pressure the opposition high up the field. Mayer added leadership on the field for the Bombardiers and her performances led to Mayer being selected as a Hockomock all-star by the league’s coaches.

 


Dana TruiniDana Truini – King Philip – Midfield
King Philip junior midfielder Dana Truini gave the Warriors a strong effort on both ends of the field, providing six goals and five assists on offense while pressuring the opposition the length of the field to help the league’s top defense. Truini also made clutch plays for the league and Div. 1 South champion Warriors this season, including the double-overtime goal that beat Franklin in the second round of the tournament. KP coach Liz Hathaway said of Truini, “Dana is always consistent with her play and her determination to win shows in every game.”

 


Kya EnosKya Enos – Taunton – Forward
Taunton senior attacker Kya Enos helped the Tigers reach the postseason for the first time in two decades and was one of the league’s top scorers with 19 goals and four assists this season. In addition to her ability as a forward, Enos also gave a young Tigers lineup important leadership during its playoff run. Taunton coach Liz Hathaway said of Enos, “She is a passionate and hard working athlete. She leaves all she has on the field and gives 100 percent in every game and practice. Kya has a great skill set that portrays the passion and dedication she brings to our team.”

 


Liz FurfariLiz Furfari – King Philip – Forward
King Philip senior attacker Elizabeth Furfari was second on the Warriors with 23 points this season, scoring 14 goals and recording nine assists. Furfari helped KP win the Kelley-Rex division title and make an impressive run to the program’s first ever Div. 1 South title and berth in the state semifinal. Furfari was part of the league’s top attack, which scored 86 goals in 23 games this season. KP coach Liz Hathaway said of the league all-star, “Elizabeth is an amazing team leader who makes everyone around her better with her vocal leadership. She gets the job done!”

 


Annie WalshAnnie Walsh – Franklin – Forward
Franklin junior Annie Walsh had another strong season for the Panthers, helping Franklin recover from a slow start to take second place in the Kelley-Rex division and make another appearance in the state tournament. Despite receiving a lot of attention from opposing defenses, Walsh finished with 16 points (seven goals and nine assists), which was tied for second-most on the team. Walsh was the site’s 2015 Underclassman of the Year and 2016 Player of the Year. Franklin coach Lisa Cropper said, “Annie was our offensive catalyst and became a more complete player and a leader this year.”

 


Kaitlyn Goyetch
 
Canton sophomore forward Kaitlyn Goyetch has been selected as the 2017 HockomockSports.com Field Hockey Underclassman of the Year. Goyetch emerged as a clutch scorer for the Davenport division champion Bulldogs, helping the team make a deep postseason run to the Div.1 South semifinal where Canton took unbeaten top seed Somerset-Berkeley to overtime.

In her second year as a starter for the Bulldogs, Goyetch scored 12 goals and recorded seven assists to help Canton hold off Foxboro by two points and regain the league title for the first time since 2013. She was even more impressive in the postseason, providing the game-winning goals to beat Dartmouth and Barnstable and scoring both goals in regulation against the Raiders in the semifinal.

“Kaitlyn is a solid player that we count on to distribute the ball in the midfield,” said Canton coach Chrissy O’Connor. “She played an outstanding postseason, scoring in each of the postseason games.”

“Kaitlyn added a lot of skill and speed to the Canton midfield and had a great understanding for finding space to create scoring opportunities,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “She stepped up when the team needed it most and played her best in the big games, which is a great sign for the next two years.”

Goyetch is the first Canton field hockey player to be named Underclassman of the Year in the four years that the award has been given out. She is the third player from the Davenport division to be honored, following Hannah Friend of Oliver Ames (2013) and Lily Daly of Foxboro (2016).

Liz Hathaway of King Philip has been selected as the 2017 HockomockSports.com Field Hockey Coach of the Year. In her 10th year in charge of the Warriors, Hathaway led KP to its first league title since 2008 and to the program’s first-ever Div. 1 South title.

“KP came into the season with high expectations and Liz had the team prepared to meet those goals every game,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “Liz provided intensity from the sidelines that kept the Warriors ready to meet every team’s best effort and she was able to change things on the fly when needed.”

The Warriors led the Kelley-Rex division from start to finish, winning the league title by eight points over Franklin and also winning both games against the top two teams in the Davenport division (Canton and Foxboro). KP finished 14-2 in the league and 19-3-1 overall this season. The Warriors scored more goals (86) than any team in the Hock and also allowed a league-low 13 goals in 23 games.

Hathaway is the fifth different coach to be selected for this award in the five years that it has been given out. She is the third coach from the Kelley-Rex to be honored, following Lisa Cropper of Franklin (2013) and Theresa Nyhan of Mansfield (2015).
