2018 HockomockSports Field Hockey Awards

King Philip senior Alli Meehan has been selected as the 2018 HockomockSports.com Field Hockey Player of the Year. The forward was selected as the Hockomock League MVP by the coaches after leading the league in scoring and helping the Warriors to a second straight Kelley-Rex division title.

Meehan dominated the field with 52 points this season, which was 18 more than the second-place finisher. The Northeastern University-commit scored 35 goals and set up 17 more. The 52 goals that Meehan was involved in this year was more than all but three other teams in the Hock scored this season. Her quickness on the ball, stick-handling ability, and the ease with which she beat defenders one-on-one was second to none this season.

“Alli was voted Hockomock League MVP and she led KP and the entire league in goal scoring,” said first-year King Philip coach Erin MacDonald. “She is incredibly fast and the team’s main playmaker.”

“Alli was just incredible to watch this season,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “Defenses seemed incapable of handling her because she had the vision and the skill to find the tiniest seam and make space for either her own shot or to set up a teammate for a great scoring chance. She is one of the most dynamic scorers that I’ve covered.”

With Meehan leading the way, King Philip has been the league’s top offense for each of the past two seasons. The Warriors scored 90 goals in 21 games this season, 15 more than any other team in the league, and advanced to the Div. 1 South semifinal.

“Alli is one of the most overall talented players I have had the pleasure of coaching against,” said Franklin coach Michelle Hess, who faced Meehan twice this season. “Alli combines her phenomenal stick skills, speed, and field sense to dominate play. She is a respectful player who always displays outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the field.”

Meehan is the second straight King Philip field hockey player to be named Player of the Year, following Christina Hathaway, and the fourth straight selection from the Kelley-Rex division, including Mansfield’s Caroline Maher (2015) and Franklin’s Annie Walsh (2016).

Honorable Mentions: Maggie Malloy (Canton), Sophia DiCenso (Foxboro), Cassi Ronan (Franklin)

2018 HockomockSports Field Hockey Awards

Foxboro’s Melissa Bordieri has been selected as the 2018 HockomockSports.com Field Hockey Coach of the Year. Bordieri led the Warriors to their second league title in three seasons and to the top seed in Div. 2 South. Foxboro lost only one game during the regular season.

“Foxboro has been one of the most consistent programs in the league and this year was no different,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “Melissa had the Warriors ready to play every game and her intensity on the sidelines translated to energy on the field. The best evidence of that is how they kept fighting to the final seconds to force overtime against Cohasset in the tournament. They weren’t giving up.”

Foxboro lost to Davenport division rival Canton in September but then went on a run of 12 games unbeaten (11-0-1), which included being the only team to beat and shutout King Philip in the league this year and avenging the loss to Canton with a 2-0 win, to finish the regular season at 16-1-1. The Warriors won the division title by a single point and entered the playoffs as the top seed in Div. 2 South. Foxboro was third in the league with 73 goals scored and was also tied for the top defense, allowing only 15 goals in 20 games and recording 11 shutouts.

This is the second time in the past three seasons that Bordieri has been selected as Coach of the Year. She is the first two-time winner of this award. She is also one of two coaches from the Davenport division to have won the award in the six years that it has been given out, Janice Sundell (2014) of Oliver Ames was the other.

Honorable Mention: Chrissy O’Connor (Canton), Michelle Hess (Franklin), Kim Meehan & Erin MacDonald (King Philip)
