2019 HockomockSports Field Hockey Awards

Attleboro senior Anna Beck has been selected as the 2019 HockomockSports.com Field Hockey Player of the Year. The midfielder was selected as the Hockomock League MVP by the coaches after leading the league in scoring and helping the Bombardiers get back to the playoffs for the first time in four years.

Beck scored 24 goals and recorded 10 assists this season. She led the league in points and goals and was in the top five in assists. The Bryant University-commit was a consistent threat in the attack for the Bombardiers, driving forward from midfield to create scoring chances for herself and her teammates. This was the second straight season that Beck has led the Bombardiers in scoring and been in the top 10 in the league.

She also stepped up against the top opponents, including a pair of goals in a tie against Franklin and both Attleboro goals in a 2-1 win against Norwood in the tournament.

“Anna led her team tremendously over the course of the season,” said Attleboro coach Lindsay Antunes. “She is a definitive playmaker, capitalizing on every opportunity possible. We often relied on stellar performances from Anna to lead us to victory.”

HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry said, “Anna was the key to Attleboro’s success this season and has been a standout for the Bombardiers for four years. Even though opposition defenses are always on the lookout for her, she finds a way to get on the ball, to beat multiple players, and score big goals.”

Beck is the first Attleboro field hockey player to be named Player of the Year and the fifth straight player from the Kelley-Rex division to be honored, following King Philip’s Alli Meehan (2018) and Christina Hathaway (2017), Franklin’s Annie Walsh (2016), and Mansfield’s Caroline Maher (2015).

Honorable Mentions: Amanda Lewandowski (Franklin), Jaime Notarangelo (Foxboro), Maria Femia (Canton)

North Attleboro coach Karen Folan said, “Lindsay’s bursts of speed with and without the ball blew away others who challenged her on the field. Varrichione scored 11 goals and assisted on nine others to lead the team in scoring. She is up to 16 assists and 30 points for her varsity career, but she adds value without the ball as well by pressuring teams high up the field. Mansfield coach Theresa Nyhan said, “Abby is totally tenacious! She pressures the ball all over the field. We like to say, defend from the front and attack from the back. As our center forward, Abby applies pressure all the time. She’s fierce and is a force!”

Kaitlyn Carney

Franklin freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Carney has been selected as the 2019 HockomockSports.com Field Hockey Underclassman of the Year. Carney was one of the top five scorers in the league this season, helping the Panthers earn the Kelley-Rex division title for the first time in three season.

Carney stepped right into the heart of the Franklin midfield this fall, with the unenviable task of replacing Cassi Ronan, and her tenacity and energy was a driving force for the Panthers. She scored 14 goals and recorded eight assists this season, which was in the top five in the league. Carney made an instant impact and her fiery personality gave Franklin additional edge in the midfield.

“Kaitlyn is one of the most talented freshman players I have had the pleasure of coaching,” said Franklin coach Michelle Hess. “I chose her to play the most difficult position on the field, center midfield.  This position requires you to have outstanding field sense, excellent offensive instincts, and the ability to recover defensively and pick up an opposing player. Kaitlyn’s stick skills are impressive and her drive and shots on goal are quite impressive.”

Hess added, “I am excited to see her continue to grow and improve as a player.”

“Kaitlyn is the type of player who can take control of a game right from the opening whistle,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “She never looked like a freshman out there, never shying away from the physical side of the game or asserting herself when necessary. Lacrosse may be her best sport but she is a star in the making in field hockey too.”

Carney is the second straight freshman to be honored as Underclassman of the Year, following King Philip’s Meghan MacDonald. She is also the second Franklin player (and freshman) to receive this honor after Annie Walsh received the award in 2015.
