Franklin senior Haley Wernig has been selected as the 2024 HockomockSports.com Field Hockey Player of the Year. The midfielder was one of the top scorers in the league this season, leading the Panthers to another unbeaten Hockomock campaign, a sixth straight Kelley-Rex division title, and another berth in the Div. 1 quarterfinal.
Wernig was third in the league in scoring during the regular season with 47 points. She scored 28 goals and dished out 19 assists, then added two more goals in the opening round win against Attleboro in the tournament and added the 100th goal of her career in the Sweet Sixteen win against Wachusett. The league’s coaches selected Wernig as the Kelley-Rex division MVP.
Franklin was the league’s top offensive team this season with 133 goals in 21 games and the Panthers were perfect (16-0) during league play. Their only two losses were at Bishop Feehan and at eventual state champion Walpole in the Elite Eight. During Wernig’s four years on varsity, the Panthers made their first two state semifinal appearances. The UMass Lowell-commit finished her career with 100 goals and 58 assists.
“Haley is an amazing leader both on and off the field,” said Franklin coach Michelle Hess. “She is an extremely fast forward who uses her speed to get by most defenders that try to stop her. Her stick skills are some of the best I have seen and her 3D skills are impressive. Haley is a very unselfish player as she also works very hard to get the ball to her teammates and set them up for an open shot on net. I cannot wait to see her excel at the D1 Level over the next four years!
HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry said, “Every time Haley had the ball, you expected something good would happen for Franklin. She is such a direct, fast player, who constantly has the opposition on its heels. It’s been a lot of fun watching her fly up and down the right wing creating chance after chance for the past four years.”
Wernig is the third Franklin player to win this award, joining Annie Walsh (2016) and Kaitlyn Carney (2021). She is also the 25th Franklin athlete, male or female, to be honored as Player of the Year for their respective sport. This is the eighth straight season that a player from the Kelley-Rex has been honored, including Mansfield’s Caroline Maher (2015), King Philip’s Christina Hathaway (2017), Ali Meehan (2018), and Kelly Holmes (2023), and Attleboro’s Anna Beck (2019).
Honorable Mentions: Shannon Lane (Canton), Haley Wernig (Franklin), Carolyn Schiavo (Canton)

HockomockSports.com First Team
Siany Ortez-Amaya – Attleboro – Goalie
Attleboro senior goalie Siany Ortez-Amaya came through with another impressive season between the pipes for a relatively young Bombardiers squad, helping them finish with 10 wins and a berth in the Div. 1 state tournament. The Salve Regina University-commit had 125 saves in the regular season and closed out her three-year career as a starter with 551 saves. She helped Attleboro give league champ Franklin a battle in the opening round of the state tournament, holding the Panthers to just two goals. Ortez-Amaya was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Attleboro coach Jess Pink said, “Siany is an incredibly hard worker and just a phenomenal athlete. Her toughness and grit makes her a true fighter in the net. She leads by example for all those around her.”
Julianna Gilchrist – Canton – Defense
Canton senior Julianna Gilchrist was a rock in the back for the Davenport division champion Bulldogs. As one of the only returning defenders on the team, Gilchrist was the glue in the back as Canton integrated some new faces, and the defense shined all season with just 23 goals against in 22 total games. Her ability to thwart opposing attacks and then help the Bulldogs build out of the back helped set up a quick transition game, allowing Canton’s forwards to use their speed. “Jules was the backbone of our defense this season,” said Canton head coach Chrissy O’Connor. “She stepped up and did an outstanding job after losing several starting players to graduation. She helped turn our inexperienced defense into one of the best defenses in the league this season.”
Erin Haney – Foxboro – Defense
Foxboro senior defender Erin Haney was rock solid at the back for the Warriors this season and a big part of their second-place finish in the Davenport and run to the Sweet Sixteen in the Div. 3 tournament. Foxboro allowed only 31 goals in 20 games this season, which was the fourth-fewest in the league. Haney was selected as an honorable mention for all-star by the league’s coaches. Foxboro coach Melissa Bordieri said, “A consistently strong defender for us, Erin was always very poised as a back and did a great job of channeling the attack and reading the attack. Erin’s strengths were undoubtedly her ability to disrupt offensive threats, whether through timely interceptions, well-timed tackles, or her strong clears. Erin earned the team’s Best Defense Award at the end of this season.”
Maddie O’Brien – Franklin – Defense
Franklin senior defender Maddie O’Brien closed out her career with another stellar season at the back, as the Panthers extended their league unbeaten streak to more than 80 games, won a sixth straight league title, and made another run to the Div. 1 quarterfinal. The Springfield College-commit was part of a defense that gave up a league-low 13 goals in 21 games this season and chipped in with nine goals and four assists at the other end. She had one defensive save. Franklin coach Michelle Hess said, “Maddie is a very smart defensive player who leads by example. Her defensive skills are impressive and as an opposing player Maddie makes it extremely hard to get into the circle to generate any offense. Maddie is one of the most coachable players I have had the pleasure of coaching.”
Brynn Allen – Foxboro – Midfield/Forward
Foxboro sophomore Brynn Allen had a breakout season in attack for the Warriors, providing them with the offensive push to finish in second in the Davenport division and reach the Div. 3 Sweet Sixteen to face top seed Sandwich. Allen was the team leader with 14 goals and had seven assists in the regular season. She was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. Foxboro coach Melissa Bordieri said, “As the team MVP and leading scorer, Brynn consistently demonstrated her knack for finding the back of the net while also creating scoring opportunities for her teammates. Brynn’s strengths are her keen game sense, where she does a great job of positioning herself in the gaps to set up plays…and her powerful drives. She is an extremely dedicated and hard-working player whose determination is unmatched.”
Raena Crandall – Franklin – Midfield/Forward
Franklin senior Raena Crandall finished off a spectacular two-year run as one of the league’s top attacking threats, powering the Panthers to another unbeaten league campaign, a sixth straight Kelley-Rex title, and a Div. 1 quarterfinal berth. The Sacred Heart University-commit was second in the league with 51 regular season points and finished her career with 93 goals and 38 assists. She was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. Franklin coach Michelle Hess said, “Raena is a tenacious forward who has a fast, hard, and accurate shot on net. Her reverse chip and sweep are impressive and deceptive. Raena is a lead by example type of player who is always looking to take her game to the next level through hard work and dedication to the sport.”
Shannon Lane – Canton – Midfield/Forward
Canton sophomore Shannon Lane emerged as one of the top offensive players in the state this year, helping the Bulldogs win the Davenport division title and a spot in the Division 2 Final Four. As just a sophomore, Lane was the leading scorer in the regular season in the Hockomock League, scoring 42 goals and adding 20 assists. She was named the 2024 HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year (below). In just two years, Lane has over 60 career goals and over 90 career points. “As only a sophomore Shannon has had more success than most seniors,” said Canton head coach Chrissy O’Connor. “She improves with every game as she gains confidence and experience. We are looking forward to seeing what she accomplishes in the next two seasons.”
Ella Marzullo – Franklin – Midfield/Forward
Franklin sophomore Ella Marzullo jumped into the starting lineup this season and made an instant impact for the league’s top offense, helping the Panthers extend their long league unbeaten run, win a sixth straight league title, and reach the Div. 1 quarterfinal. Marzullo scored 26 goals and dished out 13 assists this year, part of an attack that scored a league-high 133 goals in 21 games. She was sixth in the league in scoring during the regular season. Marzullo was an honorable mention for league all-star. Franklin coach Michelle Hess said, “Ella is a highly skilled forward who has excellent stick skills that she uses to eliminate defenders. Ella has an accurate hard shot on net and her ability to collect rebounds and deflect shots makes her a scoring threat in the circle.”
Kelsey McCleary – Attleboro – Midfield/Forward
Attleboro junior midfielder Kelsey McCleary was instrumental for a relatively young attacking unit this season, helping the Bombardiers win 10 games and reach the Div. 1 state tournament. McCleary finished with three goals and nine assists but her role was much bigger than just scoring points, as she was also tasked with covering for the defense and carrying the ball long distances in transition. McCleary was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Attleboro coach Jess Pink said, “Kelsey is a true playmaker. Her vision of the field, stick skills, and speed make her an incredible asset to our team. Her teammates value the drive she has to make herself and the team better.”
Ella Morgan – King Philip – Midfield/Forward
King Philip sophomore Ella Morgan followed up an impressive rookie season by becoming one of the top attacking threats in the league. Morgan led the Warriors with 28 goals and 40 points this year and was a big reason for KP making a run to the Div. 1 quarterfinal, knocking off top seed Lincoln-Sudbury along the way. Morgan was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. KP coach Kaitlyn Wilder said, “We had high expectations for Ella this year and she continues to exceed them for us. She works hard to improve her game to bring it to another level. She is a very fast player with a great skill set on top of her speed and was a great asset for us, especially being the goal scorer she is.”
Carolyn Schiavo – Canton – Midfield/Forward
Canton junior Carolyn Schiavo was one of the most creative and dangerous attacking players in both the Hockomock League and the state this fall. Her stick skills caused havoc for opposing defenders as Schiavo dangled her way past opponents on a regular basis. Her ability to draw a lot of attention opened up a lot of opportunities for teammates. For the 2024 season, Schiavo finished with 22 goals and 15 assists and went over the 100-point mark for her career. She was named the Davenport division MVP for her outstanding play this season. “Carolyn is always working to improve both her own skills while elevating the level of play of the entire team,” said Canton head coach Chrissy O’Connor. “Her stick work is what makes her a standout on the field but her quiet leadership on and off the field is what the coaches are also impressed by.”
Haley Wernig – Franklin – Midfield/Forward
Franklin senior Haley Wernig completed her impressive, four-year varsity career with her best scoring season to date, leading the Panthers to a sixth straight Kelley-Rex title, another unbeaten Hock campaign, and a berth in the Div. 1 quarterfinal. The UMass Lowell-commit and HockomockSports.com Player of the Year (see above) scored 28 goals and had 19 assists in the regular season and was selected as the Kelley-Rex MVP by the league’s coaches. Franklin coach Michelle Hess said, “Haley is an amazing leader both on and off the field. She is an extremely fast forward who uses her speed to get by most defenders that try to stop her. Her stick skills are some of the best I have seen and her 3D skills are impressive.”
HockomockSports.com Second Team
Shealyn Murphy – Canton – Goalie
Canton junior Shealyn Murphy once again had a standout season in net for the Bulldogs, who won the Davenport division and reached the Division 2 state semifinals for the first time in over a decade. In her second season starting in goal, Murphy was a reliable presence behind a relatively inexperienced defensive line to start the season. As the season went on, the tandem of Murphy and the Canton defense emerged as one of the top units in the league. She finished with just 22 goals against (1.11 GAA) and 145 saves (.868 save percentage) for the season. “Shealyn has had an impressive two seasons as starting goalie,” said Canton head coach Chrissy O’Connor. “Always staying after practice to allow our forward line extra practice, Shealyn is a true team player.”
Makenzie Aveiro – Attleboro – Defense
Attleboro junior defender Makenzie Aveiro was a strong, physical presence in the heart of the Bombardiers back line this season, helping them win 10 games and secure a spot in the Div. 1 state tournament. Attleboro allowed just 30 goals in 19 games this season, which was the third-fewest in the league. Aveiro helped the Bombardiers battle with league champ Franklin, losing by one late in the regular season and then 2-0 in the opening round of the tournament. Attleboro coach Jess Pink said, “Makenzie is an incredibly hard worker and has a drive to improve. She took over in that center defense position this year, helping lead the backfield and came up with some incredible stops.”
Carys Colby – Mansfield – Defense
Mansfield senior defender Cary Colby completed an impressive career for the Hornets by helping them qualify for the state tournament this season. The Franklin Pierce University-commit was a tough, physical presence in the back line and in midfield and she helped the Hornets hold teams to 44 goals in 19 games this season. Colby was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Mansfield coach Carrie Ciccarelli said, “Carys was the cornerstone of our defensive unit this year. She is a physical player that also has the ability to read and break up plays as they develop. Every game we played, Carys would stand out on the field as an absolute defensive force to be reckoned with.”
Linda Cooper – Oliver Ames – Defense
Oliver Ames junior defender Linda Cooper had another excellent season in the back line for the Tigers, helping them finish second in the Davenport division and earn a spot in the Div. 2 state tournament. Cooper was always in the right spot to block shots and clear the ball out of the crease. She also scored a pair of goals for the Tigers, who held opponents to two goals or less in 15 of their 19 games. She was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. OA coach Alexandria Sylvia said, “As a junior captain, Linda led her team by example. She worked hard each day, gave 100 percent, and would not settle for less than her best effort. She is one of the strongest players on our team and is a huge part of our defense.”
Izzy Digirolamo – Canton – Midfield/Forward
Canton senior Izzy Digirolamo played a crucial role this season for the Bulldogs, who won the Davenport division title and reached the Division 2 state semifinals for the first time in over a decade. A four-year veteran for the Bulldogs, Digirolamo’s vision and powerful swings set the offense up for a lot of success. She had seven goals this year and added 14 assists, finishing with over 40 career points (19 goals, 28 assists). “As a four year varsity player and captain this season, Izzy brought experience and determination to this team,” said Canton head coach Chrissy O’Connor. “As captain she helped lead the team to their best finish in years.”
Madison Folan – North Attleboro – Midfield/Forward
North Attleboro senior midfielder Madison Folan was a force around the crease for the Rocketeers this season, consistently providing the finishing touch for a team that reached the Div. 2 state tournament. Folan was second on the team in points this season with 17, scoring nine goals and tying for the team lead with eight assists. The three-year varsity player was selected an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches and was picked for the MSFHCA Joanne Paquette Academic All-Star Team. North Attleboro coach Karen Folan said, “Madison is a playmaker on the field. She makes accurate passes sending the ball at the right speed and tempo for her teammates to connect with to help the team transition the ball and find open space on the field.”
Kayla Kenney – Oliver Ames – Midfield/Forward
Oliver Ames junior Kayla Kenney had a breakout season in front of goal for the Tigers and was one of the reasons that they finished second in the Davenport division and returned to the Div. 2 state tournament. Kenney stepped into a bigger role in the attack this season and led the team with 17 points. She scored a team-high 12 goals and added five assists. Kenney was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Oliver Ames coach Alexandria Sylvia said, “Kayla was the heart of the forward line this season. Her stick skills have improved tremendously which made her extremely difficult to defend in the circle. She was one of the main reasons we were able to get so many corners this year.”
Izzy Leclair – Foxboro – Midfield/Forward
Foxboro senior midfielder Izzy Lecalir was at the heart of everything for the Warriors this season, playing a big role in their 11-win season, second-place finish in the Davenport division, and their playoff win that earned a spot in the Div. 3 Sweet Sixteen. Leclair finished the season with nine goals and 14 assists and was the main playmaker and creator. She was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches for the second year in a row. Foxboro coach Melissa Bordieri said, “Izzy was an outstanding midfielder this season, with an incredible game sense. Her quick footwork and deceptive ball control, Izzy consistently challenged defenders and set up scoring opportunities for herself and the team. Her strengths were her outstanding stick skills and field hockey IQ.”
Makenzie McDevitt – King Philip – Midfield/Forward
King Philip senior midfielder Makenzie McDevitt had another strong season for the Warriors, helping them finish second in the Kelley-Rex and make an improbable run to the Div. 1 quarterfinal, knocking off previously unbeaten top seed Lincoln-Sudbury along the way. The Boston University lacrosse-commit scored 14 goals and dished out 14 assists this season. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches and chosen for the state coaches association Best of 60 senior all-star game. KP coach Kaitlyn Wilder said, “With her experience on the team this year, Makenzie did a great job at leading this group to success. She was a reliable and consistent player for us. She has impeccable skills to eliminate defenders and has great composure when the ball is on her stick.”
Ella Palanza – Mansfield – Midfield/Forward
Mansfield senior midfielder Ella Palanza was the top attacking threat on a Hornets team that qualified for the Div. 2 state tournament and nearly upset Hingham in the opening round. Palanza led the team in scoring with six goals and five assists, having a hand in nearly half of Mansfield’s goals as a team. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Mansfield coach Carrie Ciccarelli said, “Ella’s speed and grit on the forward line contributed to much of our offensive success this year. She was particularly dangerous in the open field where she could create breakaways and man up situations. Her competitive drive and strong shot allowed her to lead the team in scoring this year.”
Amaya Smith – Oliver Ames – Midfield/Forward
Oliver Ames senior midfielder Amaya Smith was a force all over the field this season for the Tigers, helping lead them to a second place finish in the Davenport division and a return to the Div. 2 state tournament. The Merrimack College-commit scored six goals and dished out six assists this year, while also breaking up opposition attacks and providing an outlet for the defense. Smith was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. OA coach Alexandria Sylvia said, “Amaya was a playmaker on our team with her incredible vision on offense and defense. She was a large part of making the transition from defense to offense successful and her shot on corners will be missed next year!”
Julia Smith – North Attleboro – Midfield/Forward
North Attleboro junior midfielder Julia Smith was one of the league’s top creative players this season, helping the Rocketeers earn a spot in the Div. 2 state tournament where they had a tough loss at Duxbury. Smith finished her second varsity season with 10 goals (tied for the team lead) and eight assists, leading the team with 18 points while also helping in defense and leading the charge in transition. She was selected to the MSFHCA Joanne Paquette Academic All-Star Team and was an honorable mention for Hockomock League all-star. North Attleboro coach Karen Folan said, “Julia’s speed and endurance help her excel on the field. She keeps our offense fast paced and had numerous fast breaks this season.”
Canton sophomore Shannon Lane has been selected as the 2024 HockomockSports.com Field Hockey Underclassman of the Year. Lane was a force on the offensive end, finishing the regular season with the most goals and most assists in the Hockomock League.
Lane burst onto the scene with over 20 goals last year but was one of the most dangerous players inside the circle during her sophomore season. This year, she scored a league-best 42 goals and added a league-high 20 assists during the regular season. In four playoff games, Lane scored nine goals including a hat trick in wins over Bishop Stang and Hopkinton. Her ability to finish in a variety of ways made her very difficult for opposing defenses and even as just a sophomore, Lane had one of the hardest shots in the league.
“As only a sophomore Shannon has had more success than most seniors,” said Canton head coach Chrissy O’Connor. “She improves with every game as she gains confidence and experience. We are looking forward to seeing what she accomplishes in the next two seasons.”
Between the regular season and the state tournament, she finished with 51 goals and 21 assists. In just two years, Lane has 65 career goals and 27 assists.
“Any time Shannon gained possession in the attacking half, she drew the full attention of opposing defenses,” said HockomockSports.com Editor Ryan Lanigan. “Even with defenders closing in, Lane found a way to create space, and her ability to finish, whether it was with a powerful swing or a crafty reverse, gave the Bulldogs a huge advantage. Even as just a sophomore, she’s already a top player in the Hock.
Lane is the third Canton player to receive this honor and second in a row, following Carolyn Schiavo (2023) and Kaitlyn Goyetch (2017). It’s the sixth time a player from the Davenport division has won, including OA’s Hannah Friend (2013), and Foxboro’s Lily Daly (2016) and Mary Collins (2021).
Honorable Mention: Ella Marzullo (Franklin), Ella Morgan (King Philip), Megan Huntington (Attleboro), Brynn Allen (Foxboro)
Coach of the Year
Coach of the Year
Canton’s Chrissy O’Connor has been selected as the 2024 HockomockSports.com Field Hockey Coach of the Year. It’s the second year in a row O’Connor has earned the honor, helping the Bulldogs reach the Division 2 state semifinals for the first time in over a decade.
“Canton had some high expectations coming into the season despite only having six seniors, and the Bulldogs exceeded those expectations with a great season,” said HockomockSports.com Editor Ryan Lanigan. “This team was one of the most dangerous offensive teams but one of the best parts of the team was how a relatively inexperienced defensive group grew over the course of the season under Coach O’Connor’s leadership.”
The Bulldogs finished league play at 15-1 to claim the Davenport division title and went 16-2 overall in the regular season to earn the #5 seed in the Division 2 tournament. In the tournament, Canton rolled past Bishop Stang, Doherty, and Hopkinton to reach the Division 2 Final Four, the first time the program had gone that far since 2011.
This is the second consecutive year that O’Connor has been selected for this award and is the third coach to earn the honor multiple times, joining Franklin’s Michelle Hess (2021, 2019) and Foxboro’s Melissa Bordieri (2018, 2016). Other previous winners include King Philip’s Liz Hathaway (2017), Mansfield’s Theresa Nyhan (2016), Oliver Ames’ Janice Sundell (2014), and Franklin’s Lisa Cropper (2013).
Honorable Mention: Michelle Hess (Franklin), Kaitlyn Wilder (King Philip), Melissa Bordieri (Foxboro), Jess Pink (Attleboro)
