2015 HockomockSports Girls Lacrosse Awards

Franklin senior midfielder Emily Jeffries has been named the 2015 HockomockSports.com Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year. Jeffries led the Panthers to a fourth straight Kelley-Rex Division title. She was also selected as a league all-star and the Hockomock MVP by league coaches.

“Emily is an excellent scorer and can be trusted in big situations but also provides defensive effort in the midfield,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “She was the primary player on draw controls and was a vocal leader on the field for both the attack and the defense for the best team in the league.”

Jeffries finished the the season with a team-high 100 shots and scored 63 goals and recorded 23 assists, as the Panthers reached the Div. 1 Central-East semifinal. In addition, Jeffries had 69 draw controls, 15 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers. In the 2014 playoffs, it was Jeffries’ dramatic overtime goal that handed Franklin its first sectional title.

The UMass-Amherst-commit is the third straight Franklin player to be chosen for this award. She follows former teammate Marta Versprille, who was Player of the Year each of the past two seasons. Jeffries was an honorable mention for Player of the Year and on theHockomockSports.com first team last season.

2015 HockomockSports Girls Lacrosse AwardsGoalie – Brooke Ebert, North Attleboro
North Attleboro junior goalie Brooke Ebert helped the Rocketeers to one of the best seasons in the program’s history. Ebert saved 53 percent of the shots that she faced and stopped 197 shots on the season, as North won 13 games and finished third in the Kelley-Rex behind perennial powers Franklin and KP. The Rocketeers made the playoffs for the first time before being knocked out at Dartmouth. Ebert was also selected as a Hockomock All-Star by the league’s coaches.

 
 


2015 HockomockSports Girls Lacrosse AwardsDefense – Nicole Ellin, Franklin
Franklin senior Nicole Ellin was a rock at the back for the Panthers, just as she was this past fall for the soccer team. Ellin, who will be playing lax and soccer at Bard next year, scored nine goals for the Kelley-Rex champions, claimed 49 draw controls, 30 ground balls and had 27 caused turnovers to lead the stingiest defense in the league. Ellin was named a league all-star and helped Franklin win its first sectional title in 2014 and reach the sectional semifinal this spring.

 
 


CassieGavin_zpsjjqej1m9Defense – Cassie Gavin, Oliver Ames
Oliver Ames junior defender Cassie Gavin was one of the reasons that the Tigers recorded one of the program’s best ever seasons. OA went 10-8 in the regular season and qualified for the postseason before being beaten by No. 4 seed Bishop Feehan in the first round. Gavin was selected as a league all-star by the coaches for her ability to read the play and athleticism to stay with attackers. Gavin’s return gives the Tigers hope of building on this year’s success.

Franklin junior defender Sam Jones was another standout performer for the four-time defending league champions. Jones, who was selected as an all-star by Hockomock coaches, scored once for the Panthers and pulled in 13 draw controls. She also scooped 22 ground balls and had 20 caused turnovers. Jones and the Franklin defense were one of the reasons that the Panthers got back to the sectional semifinal and their only losses this year were to teams in the top 10 in the state.

Franklin senior Emily Jeffries was named Hockomock MVP by the league’s coaches and also the HockomockSports.com Player of the Year (see above). The UMass-commit was the leader for the Panthers this spring with 63 goals and 23 assists. But Jeffries was more than just an attacker, as she also had 69 draw controls, 15 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers to lead Franklin to another league title and undefeated record in the Hock, as well as the sectional semifinal.

King Philip junior Jen Lacroix was selected as an all-star by the league coaches, but also selected as Team MVP and named a captain for next spring. Lacroix led the Warriors to second place in the Kelley-Rex with 60 goal and 21 assists, as well as 86 draw controls. With Lacroix leading the way, KP’s only league losses were to division champs Franklin and Foxboro. For her career, Lacroix has 124 goals and 41 assist and will be hoping to challenge the Panthers next year to bring KP its first league title since 2011.

Canton senior Mary McNeil helped the Bulldogs finish in second place in the Davenport and clinch a return to the postseason. For the season, the midfielder totaled 50 goals and 10 assists for Canton to finish her career with 130 goals and 41 assists. In addition, McNeil was counted on to be a primary defender and leader for the Bulldogs, who were knocked out of the playoffs by No. 3 Notre Dame Academy (Hingham) in the playoffs. She was also named an all-star by the league’s coaches.

Foxboro senior Mary Beth Sweeney stepped back from attack into midfield this season and helped the Warriors to a Davenport title and to the program’s first sectional semifinal. The 2013 HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year, was selected as a league all-star after scoring 37 goals, dishing out six assists and recording 36 draw controls, 49 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. The senior will be playing at Southern New Hampshire University next season.

North Attleboro junior attacker Hana Caster has already set a new career goals mark for the Rocketeers and the 2014 HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year used her pace to rack up a single-season record 69 goals this spring. Caster added 49 assists as the Rocketeers rolled to 13 wins this season and reached the postseason for the first time before falling on the road at Dartmouth. One of the fastest players in the league, Caster was also named an all-star by the coaches.

Franklin junior Julia Jette was one of the attackers that the Panthers could count on in big games. The University of New Haven-commit scored 38 goals on 76 shots and added 36 assists this spring. She also added 12 ground balls and six caused turnovers. Jette was one of the five Panthers that were named league all-stars after Franklin won another league title. Jette is one of a host of returning players that has Franklin the favorite to win the title again next year.

Mansfield junior Caroline Maher was among the league leaders this spring with 77 goals to power one of the top attacks in the Hockomock. Maher also had 13 assists and 35 draw controls this year and heads into her senior season with 189 career goals and 27 assists and as one of the Hornets captains. Maher, who was also a HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year for basketball in 2013-14, was named a league all-star by the coaches and the Hornets’ Offensive MVP.

2015 HockomockSports Girls Lacrosse Awards

Franklin sophomore attacker Kendall Reardon was named the third annual HockomockSports.com Girls Lacrosse Underclassman of the Year after an impressive season with the league champion Panthers.

Reardon recorded 50 shots this season and scored 24 goals and had 18 assists to complement the rest of the powerful Panthers attack and grew into an important player as the season wore on. She became a regular in big moments, including scoring an overtime free position goal against Lincoln-Sudbury in the sectional semifinal.

“Kendall emerged as another weapon for the Panthers over the course of the season,” saidHockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “Her development as another weapon with Jeffries, Jette, Spath, and co. was part of the reason that Franklin grew from its early season loss to Needham into a team that expected to win another sectional title.”

Reardon is the third sophomore and first Franklin player to be named Underclassman of the Year, following Mary Beth Sweeney of Foxboro in 2013 and Hana Caster of North Attleboro in 2014.

Coach of the Year – Brittany Sherry, Foxboro

Brittany SherryFoxboro head coach Brittany Sherry has been named the third annual HockomockSports.com Girls Lacrosse Coach of the Year after leading the Warriors to a fourth straight Davenport Division title and to the program’s first sectional semifinal.

“Coach Sherry took a relatively young team with only four seniors and won the league title by four full games,” saidHockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “The team continues to improve in Div. 2 and showed its potential by reaching the semifinal for the first time. It looks like the Warriors are trending upwards.”

Sherry guided the Warriors to a 14-8-1 overall record, including an 8-1 mark in the Hockomock League. The only league loss for Foxboro this year was against Kelley-Rex champions Franklin and six of the team’s losses came to teams in the top 20 in the state. She has won the league in each of her four years in charge.
