2013 HockomockSports Girls Soccer Awards

Franklin junior forward Taylor Cogliano has been named the second annual HockomockSports.com Girls Soccer Player of the Year. Cogliano was also voted the Hockomock League MVP by the coaches and was named an All-New England player by the Eastern Massachusetts Soccer Coaches Association. She finished the season with 10 goals and five assists for the Kelley-Rex champion Panthers.

Cogliano, who can play in several positions across the front line and drop back into midfield, was an all-around presence for the Panthers and helped Franklin repeat as Division 1 South sectional champs with goals in each of the sectional wins, including the game-tying goal and game-winning assist against Bishop Feehan in the sectional final.

“Taylor is one of the most technically-adept players in the league and her low center of gravity makes her very tough to defend with the ball at her feet,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “She is not the out-and-out goalscorer that Kristi Kirshe was last year for the Panthers, but gives Franklin a dangerous playmaker behind the front three.”

Mansfield head coach Kevin Smith, whose team faced Franklin twice this season, added, “What makes Taylor so challenging to defend is that she does everything at speed.  Her first touch and all of her technical skills are done very efficiently and with minimal excess touches. She attacks defenders with pace, which always put the defender on the back foot.”

Franklin sophomore midfielder Victoria Stowell has been named the second annual HockomockSports.com Girls Soccer Underclassman of the Year. The award is given out to the top freshman or sophomore player from the past season. Stowell was an integral part of the Panthers run to back-to-back Kelley-Rex division titles and consecutive Division 1 South titles.

Stowell played both a holding midfield position and an attacking midfield role during the season. She finished with six goals and eight assists. Stowell’s range of passing was on display in the playoffs, particularly with a chipped pass to sister Alexis for the go ahead goal in the state semifinal against Newton North.

“Victoria has a good understanding of space that allowed her to be a consistent passing option and she has the ability to pick out the right pass under pressure to spring the numerous forwards that the Panthers boast,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry.

Franklin head coach Tom Geysen noted, “She is tactically and technically very sound. She has very good speed and quickness and reads the game extremely well.”

He added, “Above all else is her unselfishness with regards to team success over individual success. She is extremely coachable and hungry to learn and improve.”

Last year’s winner, Taylor Cogliano, went on to win the HockomockSports.com’s Player of the Year this season.

Coach of the Year – Tom Geysen, Franklin

Franklin head coach Tom Geysen has been selected as the 2013 HockomockSports.com Girls Soccer Coach of the Year. It’s the second year in a row that Geysen has been selected for this award.

Geysen led the Panthers to a 17-2-3 overall record and another Kelley-Rex Division Championship.

The Panthers reached the state-semifinals for the second year in a row after being seeded #1 overall in Division 1 South and winning their second consecutive D1 South championship.
