Taylor Cogliano

Franklin senior forward Taylor Cogliano has been named the third annual HockomockSports.com Girls Soccer Player of the Year. Cogliano was also voted the Hockomock League MVP by the coaches and was named an All-New England player by the Eastern Massachusetts Soccer Coaches Association. This is the second season in row that Cogliano has received each of these honors.

In leading Franklin to the Kelley-Rex division title and a third straight Division I South sectional final, Cogliano scored 15 goals, including a hat trick in the opening playoff game against Brockton, and recorded two assists. But her impact on the game went far beyond her offensive statistics.

“Numbers don’t reflect what she did for us. There were a number of games when she was asked to play a defensive role against the best midfielders in our league,” explained Franklin coach Tom Geysen, who earlier this season said that Cogliano had been even more valuable than in 2013 because of her versatility.

Mansfield coach Kevin Smith, whose team lost twice to Franklin during the league season, added, “She plays at such a high speed and with such technical ability and she can play multiple positions…She was also so unselfish and willing to sacrifice herself for her team evident in that she played a pure defensive role versus my team to take away our focal point of our attack.”

HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry said, “Taylor could turn a game on its head with a single touch. Her finishing was even better than last year, but she was also willing to play different roles depending on what the team needed and her control on the ball and movement off of it made Franklin a constant threat going forward.”

Honorable Mentions: Nicole Ellin (Franklin), Molly Shield (Mansfield), Hailee Duserick (Canton)

Francesca Calabraro

Oliver Ames sophomore midfielder Francesca Calabraro has been named the third annual HockomockSports.com Girls Soccer Underclassman of the Year. The award is given out to the top freshman or sophomore player from the past season. Calabraro was a key player for a young Oliver Ames team that won the Davenport division title.

Calabraro, who was an Honorable Mention for this award last season, can play deep in the midfield or in behind the strikers and that versatility is a key component of her game. She finished among the Hockomock’s leading scorers with nine goals and 10 assists.

“A very gifted athletically and technically sound player, Francesca can score from 30 yards and has been one of the most dominant players finishing in the air the past two years,” said OA coach Britt Sellmayer. “This year’s growth with her playmaking in setting up her teammates for goals added balance to her game.”

HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry said, “Francesca is a physically imposing player in the OA midfield and adds calmness in possession, passing range, and a turn of skill that can unlock a defense. She has the strength to be a force against more experienced midfields and can control a game from the center of the pitch.”

Calabraro, who was named a Hockomock League All-Star by the coaches, was on the HockomockSports.com Second XI last season and the Best XI in 2014.

Honorable Mention: Lily Sykes (Foxboro), Kristen Bortolotti (Foxboro), Hannah Reiter (Mansfield)

Britt Sellmayer

Oliver Ames head coach Britt Sellmayer has been selected as the 2014 HockomockSports.com Girls Soccer Coach of the Year. This is the first time Sellmayer has received this honor following Franklin coach Tom Geysen, who won each of the first two seasons the award was given out.

Sellmayer led the very young Tigers to an 11-2-4 overall record and to a second consecutive Davenport division title.

Despite only two goals from seniors all year and regularly starting a majority of underclassmen, Oliver Ames lost only one game during the regular season and earned the No. 6 seed in Division I South.

Honorable Mention: Doug Wheldon (North Attleboro), Tom Geysen (Franklin), Kaitlin Lamothe-Vaughn (Foxboro)
