2021 HockomockSports Girls Soccer Awards

Foxboro senior Kailee McCabe has been selected as the 2021 HockomockSports.com Girls Soccer Player of the Year. The record-setting forward led the league in scoring this fall and was selected as the Hockomock MVP and as an All-American after leading the Warriors to within a point of a league title and to the second seed in the Div. 3 tournament.

McCabe set a new single-season program record for goals this fall, scoring 32 times and adding 11 assists. Her 42 points in the regular season were 11 more than anyone else in the league. The Holy Cross-commit added to her legacy at Foxboro with a free kick goal that proved decisive in the Round of 32 game against Cardinal Spellman, kickstarting a playoff run that would end in the state semifinal.

“She is a super talented player with amazing ball skills and finishing ability, hard worker, great leader, and makes everyone around her better,” said Foxboro coach Katie Stalcup. “Kailee is a once in a decade kind of player.”

Although an injury cut short her playoffs in the Round of 16, she ended her Foxboro career with 78 goals, two league titles, and won back-to-back Hockomock League MVPs. After being selected as an All-New England player last fall, McCabe was named an All-American.

“I’ve been lucky to cover a lot of talented players in the Hock and Kailee is on the shortlist of best that I’ve ever covered,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “Her combination of skill, power, and pace was at times unstoppable. She is also one of the best finishers that I’ve seen, scoring incredible goals with both feet, and always seeming to pick the corner. She had an incredible season, capping off a remarkable four years.”

McCabe is the first Foxboro girls soccer player to be named Player of the Year and the third from the Davenport division (Canton’s Lauren Berman in 2012 and North Attleboro’s Ashlyn Gaulin in 2018). She is also the fourth girls soccer player to be named Underclassman of the Year and Player of the Year, joining King Philip’s Avery Snead and Chloe Layne and Franklin’s Victoria Stowell.

Honorable Mentions: Camryn O’Connor (Oliver Ames), Norah Anderson (Franklin), Jordan Carman (Foxboro)

Jordan CarmanJordan Carman – Foxboro – Midfield
Foxboro senior Jordan Carman scored 16 goals and added 17 assists in a breakout final season with the Warriors. Carman finished second in the league in scoring, behind only teammate Kailee McCabe, playing in multiple positions. She was a leader for the Warriors during the run to the Div. 3 state semifinal, stepping up after an injury sidelined McCabe in the first half of the Round of 16 game. Her goal against Ursuline sent the Warriors into the final four for the first time under the new statewide playoff format. She was selected as an all-star by the league coaches. Foxboro coach Katie Stalcup said of Carman, “She is a fierce competitor, unmatched intensity, and has a high soccer IQ.”

Camryn O'ConnorCamryn O’Connor – Oliver Ames – Midfield
Oliver Ames senior midfielder Camryn O’Connor was one of the top attacking threats in the league this season. The Boston University-commit scored 19 goals (third-best in the Hock) and added six assists to help the Tigers win the Davenport division title by a single point. O’Connor was selected as a Hockomock League all-star for the third straight season and was also named All-New England. She finished her four-year varsity career with 34 goals and 20 assists. Oliver Ames coach Britt Sellmayer said, “Camryn’s combination of technical ability and pace on the ball made her one of the best offensive midfielders in the state. Cam came up with the big plays in the big games all season long for our team.”

Ella PisaniElla Pisani – King Philip – Midfield
King Philip junior Ella Pisani was the focal point of the Warriors attack this season and, despite drawing plenty of attention from opposing defenses, was one of the top scorers in the league with 19 goals and nine assists. Pisani’s attacking threat from midfield helped the Warriors secure a second-place finish in the Kelley-Rex division and advance to the Round of 16 in the D1 state tournament, where they took No. 2 seed Bishop Feehan to overtime. Pisani was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. KP coach Gary Pichel said, “Ella was our MVP this season. Our offensive play centered around her. She was our best playmaker, delivering balls to several different players for scoring opportunities all season long.”

Katie MillerKatie Miller – Mansfield – Midfield
Mansfield senior midfielder Katie Miller has been a fixture in the center of the pitch for the past four years, featuring in all 71 games that the Hornets played during that time. Miller was second on the team in points this year with five goals and four assists, the best scoring season of her career, while also providing cover for the defense and covering a lot of ground in the midfield. She is a three-time Hockomock League and Eastern Mass. all-star. Mansfield coach Kevin Smith said of Miller, “She is lightning fast and attacks with the dribble at full speed putting defenses under pressure. She covers an immense amount of ground and breaks up opponent’s attacks while starting our counterattacks.”

EmilyEmily McCabe – Canton – Midfield
Canton junior midfielder Emily McCabe led the Bulldogs in goals and assists this season, finding a rich vein of form in front of goal down the stretch that helped the team overcome a difficult start and qualify for the state tournament. McCabe finished the season with 14 goals and nine assists and was sixth in the Hock in scoring during the regular season. Stepping into a bigger role this fall in a relatively young lineup, McCabe time and again came through in big moments for Canton and was selected as an all-star by the league coaches. Canton coach Idris Senyonjo said of McCabe, “She is always reliable when the team needs someone to step up or needs that all important goal.”

Allison EvinAllison Evin – Oliver Ames – Defense
Oliver Ames senior center back Allison Evin was a key to the Tigers winning the Davenport division title and reaching the Div. 2 Round of 16 this season, as part of a back line that allowed only 11 goals in 18 games. OA was tied for the league lead with the fewest goals allowed this fall. A former attacker, Evin was also important on set pieces, scoring one goal and recording seven assists. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Oliver Ames coach Britt Sellmayer said, “Allison is a very skilled player, who controls and coordinates our defense from her center back position and starts our play out of the back. She is a key part of our restarts, taking many of our corner kicks.”

Norah AndersonNorah Anderson – Franklin – Defense
Franklin junior Norah Anderson was dominant in the heart of the Panthers’ back line this season, helping Franklin secure back-to-back Kelley-Rex division titles and reach the Div. 1 Round of 16. Anderson’s leadership and athleticism were instrumental in the Panthers recording nine clean sheets this season and allowing only 11 goals in 18 games. Only twice this season did teams manage to score more than one goal in a game against the Panthers and no one scored more than two. Franklin coach Jodi Klein said of Anderson, “The captain of our defense. One of the toughest and smartest defenders I have ever had the pleasure to coach. Virtually unbeatable one-on-one, directs play from the back, and a leader on and off the field.”

Grace LawlerGrace Lawler – King Philip – Defense
King Philip junior Grace Lawler had a breakout season as a freshman on a team that reached the South final. After missing all of last season, she jumped right back into the mix with a strong 2021, helping a young back line cope with the competition in the Hockomock League. Her leadership at the back helped the Warriors to a second place finish in the division and to the Round of 16 in the state tournament, where they held No. 2 seed Bishop Feehan scoreless through regulation. She was selected as a league all-star by the coaches. KP coach Gary Pichel said, “Grace was my on the field defensive coordinator. She directed and taught our young back line how to effectively play each position. Grace’s defensive skills combined with her unmatched speed makes her one of the best defenders in the Hock.”

Rachel WelchRachel Welch – Franklin – Goalie
Franklin sophomore Rachel Welch is the next in a long line of talented goalkeepers for the Panthers and she played a key role in retaining the Kelley-Rex division title and reaching the Round of 16 in the Div. 1 state tournament. Welch had a goals against average of just 0.60 this season, recording nine clean sheets, and allowing only nine goals in 15 games this season. Only twice this season did a team score more than one goal in a game against the Panthers. Franklin coach Jodi Klein said, “Rachel is an incredibly talented goalkeeper and has an impressive level of poise and maturity in the goal for just her second high school season. She still has two more years at the high school level and she will continue to be a player to watch leading our team from the back.”

HockomockSports.com Second XI

Dani AthertonDani Atherton – Milford – Forward
Milford junior forward Dani Atherton had another strong season for the Hawks, finishing with nine goals and six assists and giving scoring punch to a roster that had a lot of new faces this season. A quick, skillful attacker, Atherton came up with big goals against some of the league’s top defensive teams and was selected as a Hockomock League all-star by the coaches. Although an injury sidelined her late in the season, her 15 points was right on the edge of top 10 in the Hock in the regular season. Milford coach Lou Colabello said, “Dani is a dynamic player who commands the respect of all opposing teams. Her speed and ball skills set her apart from most players. She has tremendous work ethic.”

Lucinda Li CotterLucinda Li Cotter – Oliver Ames – Forward
Oliver Ames sophomore forward Lucinda Li Cotter followed up her breakout debut last fall with a strong second varsity season, leading the Tigers in assists. Cotter scored seven goals this year and had nine helpers. Her 16 points were in the top 10 in the league during the regular season and helped OA win the Davenport division title. Speedy and using a low center of gravity, Cotter relished the chance to take players on down either wing and was a big reason for OA finishing second in the Hock with 68 goals scored this season. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Oliver Ames coach Britt Sellmayer said, “Lucinda Li is a great one-on-one attacker who led our team in assists this year.”

Tarynn SmithTarynn Smith – Mansfield – Forward
Mansfield senior Tarynn Smith had the best scoring season of her three-year varsity career, finding the back of the net 13 times and assisting on six other goals. Her 19 points were tops on the teams and in the top 10 in the league. Smith came up with important goals as well, including an equalizer at Oliver Ames and a goal in the playoff win against Canton. She also had a knack for finding the back of the net from long-range, scoring several goals from well outside the box. She was selected as an Honorable Mention for all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Mansfield coach Kevin Smith said, “Tarynn can shoot from anywhere inside 40 yards with either foot.”

Emma PrattEmma Pratt – North Attleboro – Midfield
North Attleboro junior midfielder Emma Pratt led the Rocketeers in scoring this season and was a mainstay for them in the center of the pitch, as North reached the state tournament and nearly pulled off an upset against highly ranked Danvers. Pratt had nine goals and four assists this fall, finishing just outside the top 10 in the league during the regular season, and was the team’s leading playmaker from midfield. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. North coach Bill Wallace said, “Emma was a difficult mark due to her speed, skills, and especially her work rate. Emma’s desire to win was contagious, both during games and at practices. She is a pleasure to coach.”

Stella ReganStella Regan – Franklin – Midfield
Franklin senior midfielder Stella Regan was one of the top playmakers for the Panthers, creating scoring chances for herself and for teammates as Franklin won a second straight Kelley-Rex division title and reached the Round of 16 in the state tournament. After suffering a horrible injury as a sophomore, Regan was finally back to 100 percent this year and finished the season with 11 goals and six assists, none bigger than her perfectly weighted chip that led to the overtime goal against Reading in the opening round of the playoffs. Franklin coach Jodi Klein said of Regan, “She creates multiple scoring opportunities in every game, has an unstoppable engine, and a perfect touch allowing her to consistently create attacking chances.”

Sofia GoclowskiSofia Goclowski – Sharon – Midfield
Sharon junior midfielder Sofia Goclowski put in an impressive season as the top playmaker for the Eagles. Goclowski was the team leader with seven goals and 11 assists this season, despite being the primary focus of opponents’ defense in the center of the pitch. Her 18 points were in the top 10 in the league during the regular season and accounted for almost 60 percent of Sharon’s goals this fall. Goclowski was selected as an all-star by Hockomock League coaches. Sharon coach Cat Sullivan said, “Sofia is our offensive spark with great playmaking abilities, excellent technical skills, and exceptional field vision. She is also a tireless worker defensively and an outstanding teammate who has a team-first mentality and a growth mindset.”

Emily DunleaEmily Dunlea – Attleboro – Midfield
Attleboro junior midfielder Emily Dunlea was one of the main playmakers in the center of the pitch for the Bombardiers, helping them make a return to the state tournament for the first time in more than a decade. Dunlea finished the season with three goals and five assists this season but was also a physical presence in midfield, winning headers and providing cover for the back line. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Attleboro coach Steve Santos said, “Emily is a great player and teammate. She is a natural leader with a great IQ. Her vision on the field and knowledge of the game were instrumental to our team’s success the past season.”

Lindsey ResnickLindsey Resnick – Foxboro – Defense
Foxboro sophomore sweeper Lindsey Resnick played well beyond her years as the leader of the Warriors’ back line, helping them finish with only 20 goals allowed in 22 games this season. She seemed to pick up her game in the playoffs, as Foxboro kept three clean sheets (including one game that went all the way to penalties) to advance to the Div. 3 state semifinal. Resnick finished the season with one goal and two assists, but her role was largely to keep the defense organized and to cut out danger before it turned into a scoring chance for the opposition. Foxboro coach Katie Stalcup said of Resnick, “Lindsey is a solid center back, great organizer, smart defender, and has great distribution.”

Allie McCabeAllie McCabe – Canton – Defense
Canton senior defender Allie McCabe has been at the heart of the Canton defense for the past few seasons and her no-nonsense defending helped the Bulldogs overcome a tough start to the season to qualify for the state tournament. McCabe was also a threat at the other end of the field, finishing with three goals, but it was her play in the defensive third where she stood out. In a team that had a lot of new faces, McCabe was the team leader in clearances, helping to keep four clean sheets this year. She was an Honorable Mention for league all-star. Canton coach Idris Senyonjo said of McCabe, “She has been a great leader and the backbone to the team’s defense over the past two seasons.”

KaraKara Santos – Mansfield – Defense
Mansfield sophomore Kara Santos has been a rock in the heart of the Mansfield defense for each of the past two seasons, helping the Hornets hold opponents to just 17 goals in 18 games this year. Mansfield held eight clean sheets and held teams to just one goal on four other occasions. She has started every game since joining varsity last fall. Santos is also a threat on set pieces, either getting on the end of corners or taking free kicks herself. She scored seven times and had an assist this season. Santos was chosen as a league all-star. Mansfield coach Kevin Smith said of Santos, “She is an excellent defender with great passing vision and foot skills, which allows her to be very composed under pressure.”

Olivia SalisburyOlivia Salisbury – Mansfield – Goalie
Mansfield junior goalie Olivia Salisbury has started every game in her three-year varsity career and has become one of the league’s top shot stoppers. She allowed only 1.07 goals per game during the regular season and had seven clean sheets, adding an eighth in the playoff win against Canton. A good communicator with her back line, Salisbury was a big reason that the Hornets allowed only 17 goals in 18 games this year and reached the Round of 16 in the Div. 2 state tournament. Quick and athletic, Salisbury covers a lot of ground in her net and came up with several spectacular saves this season. She has already set the program record for career shutouts with 21 over three years.

2021 HockomockSports Girls Soccer Awards

Franklin sophomore Anya Zub has been selected as the 2021 HockomockSports.com Girls Soccer Underclassman of the Year, as the top performing freshman or sophomore player. The sophomore forward was one of the leading scorers in the league, as the Panthers won a second straight Kelley-Rex division title.

After a breakout season last year on the wing, Zub moved into a center forward role this fall and scored 20 goals and had six assists, making her the fourth-leading scorer in the league during the regular season and the top scoring underclassman. She also came through in big games, scoring against both Mansfield and King Philip in the final games of the season to ensure Franklin won the league title outright.

“Anya just keeps getting better,” said Franklin coach Jodi Klein. “She is a very effective striker, composed in front of the goal, and makes excellent decisions on whether to shoot or pass. She eagerly accepts the pressure of being our top scorer.”

Zub was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches and was picked for the HockomockSports.com Best XI for the first time.

“Last year, Anya showed flashes of what she could do,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry, “but this year she was able to be the center of the attack and showed the full range of her capabilities in front of goal. Whether it was taking players off the dribble, shooting from distance, or getting the poacher’s goal from close-range, Anya has that striker’s instinct to know how to find the back of the net.”

Zub is the second Franklin girls soccer player to be chosen as Underclassman of the Year, following Victoria Stowell in 2013. She is also the fifth player from the Kelley-Rex to win the award in the nine seasons that it has been handed out. Other winners include King Philip’s Avery Snead (2016) and Chloe Layne (2017) and North Attleboro’s Haley Guertin (2015).

Honorable Mentions: Lindsey Resnick (Foxboro), Rachel Welch (Franklin), Kara Santos (Mansfield)

Coach of the Year

Coach of the Year

Gary Pichel
Gary Pichel

Foxboro head coach Katie Stalcup has been selected as the 2021 HockomockSports.com Girls Soccer Coach of the Year after leading the Warriors to within one point of the Davenport division title and to the Div. 3 state semifinal.

The Warriors opened the season with a loss to King Philip and then didn’t lose again until they faced Dedham in the tournament. Foxboro rolled off a 20-game unbeaten streak and went into the final game of the regular season needing a win to clinch at least a share of the league title. Although the Warriors finished second in the Davenport (after a tough draw in monsoon conditions), Foxboro finished as the league’s top scorers and its fourth-best defensive team.

In a loaded D3 bracket, filled with traditional powers, Foxboro recorded three straight clean sheets to advance to the final four in the statewide format. The Warriors were able to continue advancing despite an injury to All-American Kailee McCabe that knocked her out of the playoffs 20 minutes into the Round of 16. Despite losing their best player, the Warriors were able to beat both Newburyport and Ursuline to keep the season alive.

“Foxboro played with a lot of energy and tenacity,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “They’re a very talented team but the work rate and the pressure they put on opponents was tough to match. Katie was able to keep them focused on the task at hand, even after Kaillee was injured, making sure that the intensity didn’t slip and that they kept believing they could win those games.

Stalcup has been named Coach of the Year twice in the past three seasons, having also won the award in 2018 (there was no award in 2020). She is the third girls soccer coach to be honored multiple times, joining Franklin’s Tom Geysen (2012 and 2103) and King Philip’s Gary Pichel (2017 and 2019).

Honorable Mentions: Britt Sellmayer (Oliver Ames), Jodi Klein (Franklin), Steve Santos (Attleboro)
