2013 HockomockSports Softball Awards

Player of the Year – Shannon Smith, Milford
Milford senior Shannon Smith has been named the inaugural HockomockSports.com Softball Player of the Year for the 2013 season. Smith led the Scarlet Hawks to their second straight MIAA Division I State Championship.

The senior posted a 25-1 record with an incredible 0.04 ERA this season, including playoffs. She struck out 358 batters this season and broke the Massachusetts softball record for most strikeouts. At the plate, she batted .489 with 35 RBIs and nine home runs.

The Kentucky-bound pitcher struck out 13 in the D1 State Finals win over Agawam, including getting all three Brownie hitters swinging in the top of the seventh to seal it.

Underclassman of the Year – Renee Poirier, King Philip
King Philip sophomore first baseman Renee Poirier has been named the 2013 HockomockSports.com Softball Underclassman of the Year.

Poirier had a monster year at the plate and also chipped in at the pitching circle.

The sophomore was one of the team’s leaders in extra base hits and pitched a 1-hitter in a playoff win for the Warriors. She had a three run-home in a big game against Hopkinton.

“She’s been killing the ball all year,” KP head coach Norm Beauchemin told Josh Perry after the game against Hopkinton. “She probably has the most extra-base hits for us. She’s a great hitter.”

Coach of the Year – Brian Macchi, Milford
Milford head coach Brian Macchi has been the named the 2013 HockomockSports.com Softball Coach of the Year.

In this 8th year at the helm of the Scarlet Hawks, Macchi guided Milford to a 25-1 record and a 2013 MIAA Division I State Championship. Their lone loss of the season came at the end of April in 10 innings to North Attleboro.

Macchi saw his team give up just three runs all season and at the plate, batted in 198 runs for an average of over 7 runs a game. Six of the Scarlet Hawks’ games were stopped because of the slaughter rule.
