Attleboro senior Addie Shelton has been selected as the 2024 HockomockSports.com Volleyball Player of the Year. Shelton was a do-it-all player who played a vital role in helping the Bombardiers go undefeated in the Hock this year.
Shelton was also selected as a Hockomock League all star by the coaches this fall and contributed all over the floor for Attleboro, who had one of its best seasons in program history after going 16-0 in league play and finishing 19-2 overall.
As one of the top all-around players, Shelton ranked in the top five in the Hockomock in both kills and aces and was in the top 10 in hitting percentage. At the net, she registered 276 kills on a team-high 629 attempts with a 0.267 hitting percentage. She was also one of the top servers in the Hock, finishing second in the league with 78 aces, and was a solid player in the back row with 107 digs. For her career, she had 695 kills, 181 aces, and 369 digs.
“Addie had such a huge impact every match for the Bombardiers,” said HockomockSports Editor Ryan Lanigan. “Not only was she one of the best attacking players in the league at the net, but she was also a weapon when she rotated to the back row with a dangerous serve. Her impact this season had a direct result on Attleboro having one of its best seasons in program history.”
Shelton is the first Attleboro player to receive this award and just the fifth Bombardier to win HockomockSports Player of the Year across all sports. Previous winners include Canton’s Jess Wright (2023), Taylor Harris (2019), Elizabeth Hamilton (2015), Erin Proctor (2014), and Avery Devoe (2013), Franklin’s Cailyn Mackintosh (2021) and Lauren McGrath (2018) and the only two-time winner, King Philip’s Sydney Philips (2016, 2017).
Honorable Mentions: Julia Leonardo (Attleboro), Makyala Kuykendall (Franklin), Solely Rodriguez Martinez (Canton), Addyson Smock (OA)
Editor’s Note: The HockomockSports.com Awards are selected strictly by our staff and have no affiliation to the official Hockomock League all stars. Please note players are listed alphabetically by position.
HockomockSports.com First Team
Erin Bigham – Canton – Setter
Canton junior Erin Bigham has already established herself as one of the best setters in program history after another impressive season for the Bulldogs, helping them win a second straight Davenport title and reach the D2 quarterfinal. Bigham led the league and was third in D2 with 659 assists. She also chipped in with 232 digs, 62 kills, 43 aces, and 32 blocks. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Canton coach Pat Cawley said, “Erin is one of the most well-rounded players I have coached and she continues to elevate her game with each practice and each match. While I marvel at her great hands, ball location, and ability to connect with her hitters, I sometimes take for granted what an exceptional defensive player she has become. Erin works hard on all aspects of her game.”
Haley Carter – Attleboro – Setter
Attleboro junior Haley Carter stepped into the lineup and helped guide the Bombardiers to one of the best seasons in program history. In her first year as the primary setter, Carter set up one of the most dangerous attacks in the state with three Bombardiers notching over 100 kills. Attleboro went a perfect 16-0 in league play to secure their first-ever outright Kelley-Rex division title. She dished out 493 assists, which ranked third in the Hockomock, and had just 15 errors in 1,139 ball handling attempts. Carter also added 104 digs, 20 kills, and finished second on the team with 49 aces.
Makayla Kuykendall – Franklin – Outside Hitter
Franklin junior hitter Makayla Kuykendall had another terrific all-around season for the Panthers, helping them finish second in the Kelley-Rex division, win 17 matches overall, and reach the D1 quarterfinal to face eventual state champ Newton North. Kuykendall finished with a team-high 227 kills while adding 264 digs and 71 aces. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Franklin coach Emily Cairns said, “Makayla is a dedicated player who consistently brings enthusiasm and positivity both on and off the court. As a dynamic outside hitter, she brings energy that elevates every point of the game. She plays a crucial role in both offensive and defensive plays, excelling at controlling the net and making key contributions throughout the match.”
Reagan Lewis – Stoughton – Outside Hitter
Stoughton senior hitter Reagan Lewis was among the top point-getters in the Hockomock League this season, helping to keep the Black Knights in the mix for a playoff spot to the final week of the regular season. The Regis College-commit was second in the Hock with 249 kills in the regular season and added 50 aces and 210 digs. Lewis was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. Stoughton coach Tricia Lewis said, “Reagan is a selfless player who always wants the best for the team. I could put her anywhere really and she would shine. Reagan will be greatly missed here in Stoughton as she was not only a leader on the court, she played a big part in mentoring the underclassmen.”
Julia Leonardo – Attleboro – Outside Hitter
Attleboro senior Julia Leonardo put together a terrific final season for the Bombardiers, helping the team post arguably its best season in program history. One of the most dynamic offensive players in the Hock in recent history, Leonardo played a crucial role in helping Attleboro turn its program around, going from the bottom of the standings to the top in her final year. Her power separated her from the pack with her ability to change momentum in an instant with just one swing. She was voted as the Kelley-Rex division MVP after finishing the season with a team-high 278 kills, 162 digs, 48 aces, and 13 blocks. In her career, she put down 1,312 kills, 767 digs, and 178 aces.
Addie Shelton – Attleboro – Outside Hitter
Attleboro senior Addie Shelton put an exclamation point on a memorable career with the Bombardiers with an impressive senior campaign. After bursting onto the scene as a good second option as a junior, Shelton established herself as a true go-to player at the net this year and earned HockomockSports.com Player of the Year honors (above), the first Bombardier to do so for volleyball. She was second on the team and fourth in the Hockomock League with 276 kills with a 43.9 kill percentage and a .267 hitting percentage. She added a team-high 78 aces — good for second in the Hock — with an 85.3 serve percentage (181 career aces, 90.1 serve percentage) as well as 107 digs and 16 blocks.
Ellie Shelton – Attleboro – Middle
Attleboro senior Ellie Shelton was a big part of one of the most dangerous offenses in the Hockomock League and in the state, giving the Bombardiers a true threat from the middle. Alongside outsider hitters Julia Leonardo and Addie Shelton, Ellie Shelton helped Attleboro boast one of the most powerful hitting groups this fall. Offensively, Shelton finished the season third on the team with 138 kills, which was top five for all middles in the league, and added 40 digs and 31 aces. She was also a major part of Attleboro’s defense at the net with 26 total blocks.
Addyson Smock – Oliver Ames – Middle
Oliver Ames senior Addyson Smock was one of the most dominant players in the Hockomock League and the state this season, helping the Tigers put together the best season in program history. Smock was a force at the net, both offensively and defensively, as OA reached its first state championship in program history. Smock landed a team-best 280 kills, which also led all middles in the Hock, and added 38 aces (91.6 serve percentage) and 76 total blocks (36 solo); she’s committed to play Division 1 at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. “Statistically our strongest and most consistent player…and naturally, the most aggressive and strategic offensive player,” said Oliver Ames head coach Chelsea Cunningham. “She was an amazing leader on and off the court and what she has achieved in her high school career has definitely prepared her for her collegiate career. She has left her mark in this program and should be proud knowing she has left big shoes to fill.”
Soley Rodriguez Martinez – Canton – Defensive Specialist
Canton sophomore libero Soley Rodriguez Martinez had another stellar season along the back row for the Bulldogs, helping them win a second straight Davenport division title and get back to the D2 quarterfinal. Rodriguez Martinez led both the league and D2 with 379 digs and 98 aces. She also dished out 68 assists and had 34 kills, impacting the game in multiple phases. The two-time HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year (see below) was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. Canton coach Pat Cawley said, “Soley is an accurate passer, aggressive server, strong receiver, and has great hands, but more importantly, Soley is humble, supportive, and coachable. She has all the intangibles which are hard to teach and don’t show up on the score sheet.”
HockomockSports.com Second Team
Brooke Daniels – Franklin – Setter
Franklin senior Brooke Daniels had a strong final season at setter and helped the Panthers continue to be one of the strongest attacking teams in the league, finishing second in the Kelley-Rex, and getting back to the D1 quarterfinal. Daniels finished the season with 575 assists, which was one of the top totals in the league while chipping in with 33 aces and 123 digs. She was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. Franklin coach Emily Cairns said, “Brooke is a dedicated leader who excels at organizing and driving the offense. She worked effectively with each hitter, ensuring each hitter had the sets they needed to perform their best. Her openness to feedback and ability to guide the team made her an integral part of its success.”
Lyla McDonough – Oliver Ames – Setter
Oliver Ames sophomore Lyla McDonough slid right into the lineup and had a big impact for the Tigers this fall. Taking on some responsibility as one of OA’s setters, McDonough worked seamlessly with a mix of experienced and new faces at the net to create a very dangerous OA offense. She ended up dishing out a team-high 407 assists, which was fourth most in the Hockomock League, and had just 15 errors on 944 ball handling attempts. She was also one of OA’s best servers with a team-high 50 aces and a 93.6 serve percentage. “She came out the gate focused and driven and was consistent with her performance,” said Oliver Ames head coach Chelsea Cunningham. “She put the work in day in and day out, always looking for feedback and ways to get better every day. Her maturity and volleyball IQ speak for itself; more importantly, her experience this year will definitely keep her motivated to pick up where we left off.”
Fiona Bailey – King Philip – Outside Hitter
King Philip senior hitter Fiona Bailey had another great season to end her three-year varsity career. She helped the Warriors finish the season with 11 wins and a state tournament berth. The Plymouth State University-commit had a team-high 212 kills this season, giving the Warriors a consistent threat on the outside and finishing among the top 10 hitters in the Hock. Bailey was selected as an all-star for the second year in a row by the Hockomock League coaches. KP coach Kristen Geuss said, “Fiona was our go-to hitter who we relied on to finish the point. Fiona has a high volleyball IQ and was able to find holes in opponents’ defense. Fiona is a leader on and off the court.”
Emerson Delleo – Franklin – Outside Hitter
Franklin freshman hitter Emerson Delleo stepped into the lineup this season and instantly became one of the league’s top threats on the outside, helping Franklin put together a 17-win season, finish second in the Kelley-Rex, and reach the D1 quarterfinal to face eventual champ Newton North. Delleo finished the season with 180 kills (second on the team) while contributing 140 digs and 36 aces. Franklin coach Emily Cairns said, “Emerson came in as a freshman and immediately made an impact, just contributing but dominating the court. Her powerhouse attacks and serves became a key asset and elevated our team’s performance. Her strong work ethic, drive to improve, and positivity played a pivotal role on our team.”
Sally Hoban – Canton – Outside Hitter
Canton senior hitter Sally Hoban emerged as one of the league’s most dangerous attackers on the outside, giving the Bulldogs the offensive push needed to win a second straight Davenport division title and return to the D2 quarterfinal. Hoban led the league with 321 kills, which was third-best in D2. She also contributed 193 digs and had a serving accuracy of 98 percent (only six errors in 280 serves). Hoban was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. Canton coach Pat Cawley said, “Sally had an amazing senior campaign as our go-to hitter and was a leader on and off the court. In her four years on the varsity squad, Sally added not only her volleyball skills, but also her energy, leadership, and desire to ensure the program’s culture stays strong into the future.”
Chelsea Wagner – Oliver Ames – Outside Hitter
Oliver Ames sophomore Chelsea Wagner had a breakout season in her first varsity season with the Tigers. After losing a lot of firepower to graduation, OA was in need of some new players to step up and Wagner jumped right in and looked like a seasoned veteran at outside hitter. She gave the Tigers a weapon on the outside to complement the powerful hitting of senior Addyson Smock in the middle. In 68 sets this year, she finished second on the team with 170 kills. “Young and feisty at the net as another primary offensive player for our team,” said Oliver Ames head coach Chelsea Cunningham. “She wasn’t afraid to hit the ball and enjoyed any moment on the court. She can play just about any position and always does what is best for the team. It’s fun to watch her grow and learn from every game and practice; she has a spark — and she is definitely just getting started.”
Noemie Eugene – North Attleboro – Middle
North Attleboro senior Noemie Eugene followed up a breakout season last year with another stellar season in the middle for the Rocketeers. A force both offensively and defensively, Eugene made a major impact on a young North Attleboro team. She was among the leaders for all middles in the Hock and registered a team-high 154 kills on a 0.327 hitting percentage. She was also one of the best defensive players in the league, posting a league-leading 82 total blocks (38 solo). “Noemie is a force to be reckoned with on and off the court,” said North Attleboro head coach Rachel Gould. “As a captain, she led by example showing grit, tenacity, and mental toughness, and without her talent and leadership, our team would not have had the success that we had. North Attleboro volleyball has been lucky to have her and she has been a huge inspiration to the underclassmen.”
Olivia Richard – Mansfield – Middle
Mansfield senior middle Olivia Richard closed out her career with another strong season at the net, helping the Hornets get back into the Div. 2 state tournament. The Sarah Lawrence College-commit finished the season with 126 kills and 37 blocks, impacting the match on both sides of the net, but also chipped in at the service line with 35 aces. Richard had a team-high 15 kills in Mansfield’s playoff match. She was selected as an honorable mention for all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Mansfield coach Tara DeGirolamo said, “Liv is a player that leads by example both on and off the court. She is a force at the net and got stronger each game. Her effort, attitude, and leadership will be missed next year.”
Alex Pauline – King Philip – Defensive Specialist
King Philip senior libero Alex Pauline had another impressive season along the back line for the Warriors, helping them close the regular season strongly and reach the Div. 1 state tournament. Pauline had a great all-around season, finishing with 399 serve receptions and 322 digs. She also contributed offensively with 50 aces and 169 service points won. Pauline was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. KP coach Kristen Geuss said, “Alex kept us in every match with her consistent serve receive and incredible defense. She is quick on her feet and gives 100 percent effort. Her ability to read the hitter and adjust to the blockers allowed her to be in the right place at the right time. Her strong serves also helped KP put points on the board.”
Canton sophomore Soley Rodriguez Martinez has been selected as the 2024 HockomockSports.com Volleyball Underclassman of the Year. Rodriguez-Martinez excelled at the libero spot again this season, helping the Bulldogs to a second straight Davenport division title.
Rodriguez Martinez continued to impress along the back row for Canton this season, as the Bulldogs went 14-2 in the league (19-4 overall), swept eventual Div. 2 runner-up Oliver Ames during the regular season to win the Davenport title by one match, and got back to the D2 quarterfinal.
Canton coach Pat Cawley said, “Soley is an accurate passer, aggressive server, strong receiver, and has great hands, but more importantly, Soley is humble, supportive, and coachable. She has all the intangibles which are hard to teach and don’t show up on the score sheet. Soley’s energy, hustle, and never say die attitude, set an example to her teammates and elevates the game of those around her. She is a joy to coach!”
Rodriguez Martinez led not only the Hockomock League but all of D2 with 379 digs. She was also the league and division leader with 98 aces, chipped in with 68 assists, and finished with 34 kills. Her awareness and volleyball IQ helped her contribute not only to Canton’s typically stingy defense but also as a strong passer and finisher in the attack.
“Soley was once again an elite defensive player this season,” said HockomockSports Editor Ryan Lanigan. “On top of her reliable defense, she would make extraordinary plays almost every match, the type of plays that would be huge momentum swings. Her defense on its own separates her from the pack, but she is also one of the best servers in the league and her energy is infectious.”
Rodriguez-Martinez is the second Canton player to be selected for this award. Elizabeth Hamilton was the first in 2013. She is the first player to have won the award twice and the only libero to have been recognized as Underclassman of the Year. Previous winners include King Philip’s Mary Campbell (2014) and Nicole Coughlin (2018), Mansfield’s Meg Hill (2015), Franklin’s Lauren McGrath (2016) and Cailyn Mackintosh (2019), Oliver Ames’ Allie Kemp (2017), and Attleboro’s Julia Leonardo (2021).
Honorable Mention: Olivia Leonardo (Attleboro), Emerson Delleo (Franklin), Lyla McDonough, Chelsea Wagner (Oliver Ames)
Coach of the Year
Coach of the Year
Attleboro head coach Mary Katherine Blakney has been selected as the 2024 HockomockSports.com Volleyball Coach of the Year. Blakney led Attleboro to arguably the best season in program history, a first outright Kelley-Rex title, and an unbeaten run through Hockomock League play.
Blakney has helped turn Attleboro from an afterthought to one of the strongest programs in the league. This year, the Bombardiers returned an exciting complement of attacking talent and turned it into a 16-0 record in the Hock (19-2 overall). Attleboro spent most of the season ranked as one of the top two or three teams in the state. Its only regular season loss was to eventual Div. 2 champion Westboro in the season finale.
The Bombardiers reached the D1 Sweet Sixteen before a loss to Winchester, but the 19 wins was the highest total in program history. This was Attleboro’s second Hockomock League title, but its first outright. The Bombardiers finished in a three-way tie for first with Franklin and King Philip in 2022.
“Attleboro had the best lineup of hitters in the league, but the improvements the team made defensively from last year is what made them a league champ,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “Mary Katherine found the right rotations, plugged the right players into the lineup, and had the Bombardiers clicking from the first match. This is a deep league but Attleboro was determined to win the title outright.”
This is the second time that Blakney has been selected as Coach of the Year, having also won it in 2022. She joins Canton’s Pat Cawley as the only volleyball coach to be honored multiple times. She is also one of four Attleboro coaches to be recognized in their respective sports, the list includes Mike Strachan (football, 2013), Mark Houle (basketball, 2019), and Bri Bracken (basketball, 2024) and first to be honored twice.
Honorable Mention: Pat Cawley (Canton), Kristen Geuss (King Philip), Chelsea Cunningham (Oliver Ames), Emily Carens (Franklin)
