Stoughton senior Ava Vieira has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Dec. 30 through Jan. 5. Vieira is the 17th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and third in the winter season.
Vieira continued her stellar senior season by taking home first place at a pair of tournaments this week, including Stoughton’s first annual Girls Toughtown Tournament, and won all six of her matches by pin.
“Ava has been on a tear to start this season, a 9-0 start all coming with a finish via pin,” said Stoughton head coach Andrew Iverson. “Ava wrestled in two tournaments this past week over winter break and completely dominated the field taking home two gold medals in each of the tournaments. Ava is one of the faces of our program as well as being one of the best wrestlers in our room, battling through injuries and really epitomizing the ‘NoExcuses’ mentality daily, couldn’t be more proud as a coach.”
The week started with a trip to Framingham for the Dan Baldoni Holiday Tournament. Vieira got off to a great start, pinning her first opponent inside the opening 30 seconds of the match. In the second match, Vieira was down 7-2 in the first but battled back and won by fall in the third. Vieira closed out the tournament with a pin in the final and helped the Black Knights finish fifth as a team, despite only have two girls competing (classmate Angie Berry also finished first in her weight class). That success continued in the home meet over the weekend, with Vieira again taking first place with another perfect 3-0 record and three more pins. Stoughton finished seventh out of the 12 teams that competed.
