Taunton senior Will Buffington has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Feb. 15 through Feb. 21. Buffington is the 24th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2025-26 school year and the 10th in the winter season.
Buffington continued his dominant senior season by bringing home the title at 215 pounds at this past weekend’s Div. 1 state championship meet held at North Andover High. Buffington, who eclipsed the 100-win mark for his career earlier this season, entered as the No. 2 seed and won twice by pin and twice by decision to earn his first state title.
“Will avenged one of his two losses from this season by beating Central Catholic’s Jackson Meehan in the semifinals,” said Taunton head coach Adilson Galvao. “He also defeated Quinn Bowles in both the D1 South Finals and the State Finals to win the tournaments.”
Buffington opened with a pinfall in his first match. Leading 5-1 in the second period, he pinned the No. 15 seed to advance to the quarterfinal. The match against No. 7 seed Bryant Mason of St. John’s Prep was scoreless going into the final minute, but a late reversal gave Buffington the hard-fought win. In the semifinal against Central Catholic’s Jackson Meehan, Buffington went behind by a point in the first but he got a takedown in the final 10 seconds of the period and pinned his opponent to reach the final.
In the final, Buffington (48-2) faced Boston Latin’s Quinn Bowles, who had upset the top seed in the semis, and he took control right from the start of the match. With a pair of takedowns, Buffington jumped out to a 6-1 lead after one period. Bowles got a point back with an escape early in the second, but Buffington led by four going to the third. He added breathing room with a reversal in the third period and held on over the final minute to earn the 8-3 win and the title.
