After more than a quarter century coaching at North Attleboro High School, Geoff Burgess will now oversee the entire athletic department.
North Attleboro has named Burgess, a four-sport varsity coach who has been a teacher at the school since 2001, as its new athletic director he confirmed to HockomockSports.com. Burgess began coaching in North’s wrestling program in 1999 and has also coached boys and girls soccer, girls tennis and volleyball.
“I am looking forward to continuing the tradition of North athletics,” Burgess told HockomockSports.com. “Hoping to instill some of my own innovations along the way. I have been around athletics my entire career in education and this seemed like a natural progression.”
Burgess has coached in over 400 games across 22 varsity seasons between boys soccer (2011-current) and girls soccer (2004-2010, 2022). He will continue to coach the North boys soccer team while stepping away from wrestling after eight seasons as the varsity head coach. Burgess earned 108 varsity dual-meet victories, including his 100th this past January, and guided North to four Hockomock championships.
His most successful head-coaching tenure came with the girls tennis program, which he led from 2002 through 2018. Burgess won 295 matches, posted an 80% winning percentage, captured eight Hockomock championships and was named the 2014 MIAA Girls Tennis Coach of the Year.
Across soccer, wrestling and tennis, Burgess has accumulated 528 varsity victories and 13 Hockomock League championships.
A graduate of the University of Miami, Burgess received the school’s Jack Kelsey Award for Outstanding Leadership in 1999. He also holds a master’s degree in education from Simmons College and a master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University.
