Hockomock wrestlers took to the mats at six different sectional meets on Saturday and defending Kelley-Rex division champion North Attleboro walked away with the D2 South crown.
In the D2 South field – one with four Hockomock teams – North Attleboro put up a staggering 287.5 points to claim the title. Alex Devitto (126), Nick Gould (145), Jack Donahue (170), Nick Morrison (182) and Brennan Sankey (285) all won sectional titles for the Rocketeers.
“There was a lot of excitement throughout the day as the tournament progressed,” North Attleboro head coach Wayne Griffin said. “All of our guys made it through the first two opening rounds and to have 14 semifinals is a pretty darn good accomplishment, especially for all the underclassmen. Then following up and putting 10 in the finals is a huge accomplishment for the team.”
Other highlights for the Rocketeers included Mike Gould’s 100th career win, coming in the opening match against Plymouth North’s John Tamulionis. Gould ended up finishing second at 138, qualifying for states.
Sharon, which placed fourth overall, had a trio of winners with Yosef Ellis-Rech (113), Luke Stillman (132) and David Ellis-Rech (138) all finishing in first. The Eagles got a strong push from Jason Powell (160), who finished second, as well.
Overall there were 14 Hockomock wrestlers that claimed sectional titles. Foxboro’s Phil Dure (120) and Matt Kelley (126) paced a strong performance for the Warriors, who had nine wrestlers finish inside the top six. In D1 Central, Franklin’s John Miller won a thriller in the semifinals and then took the title at 220. The Panthers had 10 wrestlers place in the top six with Jordan Carlucci (106), Nick Narducci (126), Dylan Maclean (138) and Evan Hernandez (195) all reaching the finals.
In D2 Central, both Milford and King Philip had strong showings, finishing in the top five for team standings. Milford’s Nick Marcolini (106) was the lone Hock wrestler to win a D2 Central crown but the Scarlet Hawks also had second places from Brett Kimball (132), Ryan Gray (182), Nick Johnson (195) and John Niro (285). The Warriors’ top finishes were from Joe Fruci (138) and Anthony Fruci (152), both coming in second.
In D3 Central, Canton’s Brendan Lewis won the sectional title at 126 and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Mark Whalen (220) had a second place and Harry Carter and Justin Dickie each placed as well.
