Maffeo was also voted as a Hockomock League All Star by the league’s coaches after helping the Bulldogs win yet another league title and make a strong playoff run.

“Jackson has improved in each of the three seasons that he’s played with the Bulldogs,” HockomockSports.com Editor-in-Chief Ryan Lanigan said. “Not only was he the top defenseman on the best defensive team, he played a key role in setting up Canton’s offense as well.”

Maffeo saw a ton of ice time in the Bulldogs’ 23 games, scoring a pair of goals and adding 12 assists for a total of 14 points, sixth on the team.

“Jackson’s tough, consistent defensive play was instrumental to our success this season,” Canton coach Brian Shuman said. “From our first game of the season onward, he was asked to log a lot of minutes, and it seemed like he only got stronger as the season progressed.”

The Bulldogs played rival Oliver Ames twice this season and Maffeo was a big reason in preventing the Tigers from scoring more than one goal in the two meetings combined.

“Canton’s defense was a major reason why the Bulldogs were once again among the top teams in Div. 2 and Jackson was the spearhead for that,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “He has really developed into a physical player in his own zone and a leader for the Bulldogs and he was one of the main reasons that Canton only allowed 27 goals this year.”

Maffeo joins Franklin’s Ryan Spillane (2015), Oliver Ames’ Tyler Provost (2014) and Canton’s Brian Brooks (2013) as winners of the award. Maffeo is the third junior to win the award.

Coach of the Year – Chris Spillane, Franklin

Chris SpillaneFranklin head coach Chris Spillane has been selected as the 2016 HockomockSports.com Hockey Coach of the Year. It’s the second straight year that Spillane has been selected as the winner of the award.

Spillane led the Panthers to another Kelley-Rex division title and the program’s first ever D1 State Championship. The Panthers posted a 13-4-5 record in the regular season, including an undefeated 8-0-2 record in league play to clinch Franklin’s fifth straight Kelley-Rex title.

After losing 21 seniors from last year’s historic Super 8 team, it looked like the Panthers would be set for a rebuilding year. Instead, Spillane guided a team with very minimal varsity experience back to the playoffs and to the state championship.

“Even more than winning a title this season, Franklin’s consistency for the past decade is what sets Chris apart as a coach,” HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry said. “He built a program that was dominant in Division 2 and very quickly has the Panthers reaching the highest levels in Division 1 too.”

Spillane joins Canton’s Brian Shuman as winners of the award. Shuman won the first two years (2013, 2014) that the award was given out.

Honorable Mention: Steve Snizek (North Attleboro), Brian Shuman (Canton), Kris Metea (Taunton)
