Foxboro freshman Athena Li has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for May 23 through May 29. Li is the 24th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2020-21 school year and fourth in the spring season.
Li has been impressive in her first varsity campaign, racking up wins at first singles for the league-leading Warriors. Last week, Li went 3-0 and lost only one game to help Foxboro move closer to another league title. The Warriors are now two wins away from regaining the Davenport division title for the first time since 2015.
“Athena is a truly special player and has done an amazing job at first singles for us this season,” said Foxboro head coach Jon Montanaro. “As a freshman, she has not only won all 10 of her matches against some tough competition in the Hock, but has lost only two games all season. Her success is no surprise; she’s one of the hardest workers on our team. She’s a highly intelligent player, maneuvering her opponents around the court with both consistency and accuracy. As talented as she is on the court, she has an even better personality. She’s been a great asset to our program and we’re lucky to have her on our team.”
The week started with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Stoughton, but Li looked solid at first singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. She followed that up with an even better performance the next day, winning her match 6-0, 6-0 as Foxboro took the 4-1 win as a team. On Thursday, Li continued to dominate, again sweeping her match in straight sets without giving up a game and Foxboro won 5-0.
The Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, is selected by the HockomockSports.com staff. Nominations can be submitted throughout the week up until Saturday night at midnight. There may be a poll posted on every Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selection but do not strictly dictate the decision.
