King Philip senior Elise Pereira has been selected as the Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for April 29 through May 5. Pereira is the 27th player selected for the 2017-18 school year and the fourth player chosen during the spring season.

Pereira earned two wins in the circle for King Philip this week and provided pop at the plate as well, lifting the Warriors to three league wins that move KP into first place above rival Taunton in the Kelley-Rex standings. The Warriors are now two up in the loss column on the Tigers in search of a 12th league title in the past 13 season.

“Elise is really, really starting to come around,” KP coach Norm Beauchemin said. “She had a great game against Taunton and I think she pitched just as well as she did today. She’s become a leader this year.”

Pereira provided the heroics last Saturday in a title showdown against Taunton at the PAL fields. She belted a walk-off, three-run homer and had what she and Beauchemin called her best start of the season against the potent Tigers lineup. That momentum carried over into this week’s games.

After allowing three runs in the first inning against Stoughton on Monday, Pereira settled into her start and blanked the Black Knights for the final six innings as KP rolled to a big win. She got the day off from pitching against Sharon but was back in the circle again on Friday in a showdown against previously unbeaten North Attleboro. She helped her own cause with a pair of home runs and drove in five, while going the distance to earn an impressive win. Pereira allowed only three hits and struck out six Rocketeers, as KP sent a message with a 16-2 victory. For the season, Pereira has a record of 5-2 and has struck out 47 hitters in 47 innings of work, while also being a key cog in the league’s top scoring lineup.

The Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, is selected by the staff. Nominations can be submitted throughout the week up until Saturday night at midnight. There may be a poll posted on every Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selection but do not strictly dictate the decision.
