North Attleboro junior Gavin Wells has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for June 20 through June 26. Wells is the 28th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2020-21 school year and eighth in the spring season.
Wells came through with two of the biggest hits of the season for the Rocketeers, including a walk-off against fellow Davenport champ Oliver Ames and a game-saving hit against previously unbeaten top seed Nauset, to help North reach the Div. 2 South semifinal.
“Gavin has been a consistent and steady player for us all year,” said North Attleboro head coach Mike Hart. “He doesn’t get worked up in any situation and came up big for us twice in consecutive games. Down to the our last out of the season against Nauset, with the tying runs in scoring position, we knew Gavin would have a quality at bat to give us a chance to go to extra innings and win it. We’re glad he’s coming back next year!”
In the playoff opener, North faced OA for the third time this season and it turned out to be a slugfest at Community Field. The Rocketeers rallied with six runs in the bottom of the fifth, including an RBI-single from Wells, to seemingly take control, but the Tigers came back with four runs in the seventh to tie the game at 11-11. North loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning and Wells recorded his third hit of the day to plate the game-winning run.
Two days later, North took the long ride down the Cape to take on top seed Nauset. The undefeated Warriors had North on the ropes, down to its final out in the top of the seventh, but Wells delivered again, this time with a two-out, two-run single to center that tied the game and forced extras. North would go on to score eight times in the eighth inning to hand Nauset its only loss and reach the semifinal. He also walked twice and stole a pair of bases between the two games.

There may be a poll posted on every Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selection but do not strictly dictate the decision.
