Mansfield senior Jen Peel has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for February 5th through February 11th. Peel is the 20th player selected for the 2016-2017 school year and the eighth selection during the winter season. She is the second girls’ basketball player to be selected this winter.
This week, against two of Mansfield’s biggest rivals (Attleboro and Franklin), Peel showed why she is considered one of the top guards in the Hockomock League and her performances helped clinch back-to-back league titles for the first time in program history.
On Monday night against the Bombardiers, Peel hit five three-pointers on her way to 21 points and also pulled down seven rebounds. She hit back-to-back clutch threes in the fourth quarter that helped the Hornets extend their lead to double digits and complete the season sweep of Attleboro. Peel followed that with an 18-point night against the Panthers on Friday and dished out seven assists to avenge Mansfield’s only league (and MIAA-recognized) loss of the season.
“Jen’s had a great career for us, but certainly this week she took her game to another level against Attleboro and Franklin,” said Mansfield coach Mike Redding. “Between the long-range threes, her drives to the hoop and finding teammates with great passes, she put the team on her shoulders in two big games and led us to victory.”
Following his team’s loss on Monday, Attleboro coach Rick Patch said, “Jen Peel was just on fire when she needed to be…She hit big shots when she needed to and that’s why she’s an MVP-caliber player. She makes that team go.”
Although Peel has moved from the point to an off-guard position this year, but the Mansfield offense still runs through her and earlier this season she set a new program record by eclipsing the 400-assist mark. She had 83 assists through the opening 15 games, an average of 5.5 per game, while also leading the team with 15.0 points per game (as of Jan. 30). Mansfield is currently in line to be one of the top seeds in the Div. 1 South sectional.
The Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, is selected by the HockomockSports.com staff. Nominations can be submitted throughout the week up until Saturday night at midnight. There may be a poll posted on every Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selection but do not strictly dictate the decision.
