Canton junior Maggie Malloy has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for March 4 through March 10. Malloy is the 23rd player selected for the 2017-18 school year and 13th player chosen during the winter season.
Malloy has spearheaded Canton’s top line during its run to the TD Garden to play for the Div. 2 state championship. She has scored six goals and recorded two assists in three games this postseason, scoring the game-winner for the Bulldogs in all three to lead the second seed to it second straight state title game.
“There is no one who works harder,” said Canton coach Dennis Aldrich. “She deserves everything she gets because she’s the hardest working player on our team. She’s a gamer and she brings it every night. She may not have the polished skill that some people do but what she has you can’t teach.”
Malloy got the Bulldogs going in the playoffs with a natural hat trick in the third period of the opening round game against an upset-minded Walpole team. She scored the game-winner early in the third after Canton had been largely outplayed in the opening two periods, and she and the Bulldogs haven’t looked back.
In the quarterfinal, Malloy scored two goals and had a pair of assists, including the third goal, which turned out to be the game-winner, as Canton avenged last year’s state final loss to Notre Dame Academy (Hingham). On Monday night, Malloy scored the game’s only goal in a shutout of Archbishop Williams that sends the Bulldogs back to the final to face top seed Wellesley.
The Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, is selected by the HockomockSports.com staff. Nominations can be submitted throughout the week up until Saturday night at midnight. There may be a poll posted on every Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selection but do not strictly dictate the decision.
