After falling short by less than two points a year ago, Milford reclaimed the Division 2 state championship in emphatic fashion over the weekend.
The Scarlet Hawks finished 1.5 points behind Minnechaug last season as their bid for a three-peat came up just short. This year, Milford had a dominant showing to get back to the top of the Division 2 mountain. Derek Marcolini, Aidan Baum, and Michael Boulanger all won D2 state titles (for the second straight year) in their respective weight classes and four more Hawks reached the finals for a total of 177.5 points, comfortably ahead of Bridgewater-Raynham in second place with 154 points. North Attleboro secured a top-five finish with 84 points, just a half point behind fourth-place Duxbury.
In total, six male wrestlers and two female wrestlers were crowned state champions over the weekend. Sharon’s Cyrus Jones (175) battled through an injury-riddled season to join Marcolini (126), Baum (144), and Boulanger (157) as Division 2 state champions. Taunton’s Elijah Prophete secured his second straight Division 1 title, this time winning at 190, and Franklin freshman John Woodall continued his incredible rookie season with the D1 title at 106.
King Philip’s Ksenia Gorman and Mansfield’s Tessa Johnson made history over the weekend. Both became the first female wrestling state champion for their respective schools. Gorman won the Division 1 title at 152 while Johnson, who finished third last year, needed less than two minutes for a pinfall win at 145 in Division 2.
