Boys Soccer
Taunton, 1 @ Attleboro, 7 – FinalAttleboro scored under three minutes into the game and the offense caught fire in a 7-1 win over visiting Taunton. Billy Badger used his speed to latch onto a through ball from Corvengdjimy Thomas down the right side and finished at the far post to ignite the offense. Thomas went on to net a hat trick in the first half, finishing off a right-footed shot in the 8th minute, adding a second from a tight angle down the left wing in the 18th minute, and making it 4-0 off a pass from Drew Ribeiro. Taunton pulled one back in the 26th minute on a penalty kick from Javonte Fernandes but Ribeiro was able to collect a throw in the box and put one past the keeper to make it 5-1 in the 31st minute. Thomas netted his fourth goal of the half with just under two minutes to go after a low service from Badger. Lucas Pereira capped the scoring in the 69th minute as he raced onto a rebound after freshman Jaedyn Beland had his shot hit off the crossbar.

Mansfield, 2 vs. Bishop Feehan, 0 – FinalMansfield and Bishop Feehan battled to a scoreless first half but the Hornets needed just five minutes in the second half to find the eventual game-winner. Sean Higgins’ hard cross deflected off a defender and past the keeper to hand the Hornets the lead early in the second half. After carrying most of the play in the second half, Mansfield doubled its lead with just under 15 minutes to play on a great hustle play from sophomore Dominic Nassif. The Shamrocks tried to keep possession in their own defensive third but Nassif’s pressure paid off and he forced a turnover and tucked it into the net. “The team played great team ball almost the whole game,” said Mansfield head coach Steve Sheridan. “I’m very happy with our play this week.”

Player of the Week: Javonte Fernandes, Taunton Soccer

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Taunton senior Javonte Fernandes has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Sept. 18 through Sept. 24. Fernandes is the third player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.

Fernandes has been at the heart of the Tigers getting off to a 4-2 start to the season and challenging for the Kelley-Rex division lead. He scored three times and had an assist last week, as Taunton pulled out a pair of dramatic, one-goal wins against North Attleboro and Mansfield.

“Javonte has really grown into a great player over the years and now is proving it on the field his senior year as a strong leader and captain,” said Taunton head coach Jesue Lopes. “He’s not the most vocal player on the field but definitely leading the team with his positive attitude and through his actions. This past week it happened to come from some amazing goals and assists when we needed them the most. We are looking forward to this week’s performances.”

Coming off a tough loss to league-leading Franklin, Taunton got off to a perfect start against North, scoring in the opening minute. Fernandes picked up the assist on Xavier Mercado’s opener. Against the run of play, Fernandes made it 2-0 after half an hour when he pounced on a loose ball in the box. North battled back and equalized with just seconds left on the clock. Rather than settling for a draw, Taunton sped into the attacking third and won a corner. Christian Rodriguez played it short to Fernandes, who burst into the penalty area and squeezed a shot through traffic for his second of the day and the game-winner with the final kick of the ball. Fernandes added a goal on Friday against Mansfield, as Taunton jumped out to a three-goal lead only to hold off a late Hornets charge and pull out the 3-2 win.
