Taunton senior Javonte Fernandes has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Sept. 18 through Sept. 24. Fernandes is the third player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.
Fernandes has been at the heart of the Tigers getting off to a 4-2 start to the season and challenging for the Kelley-Rex division lead. He scored three times and had an assist last week, as Taunton pulled out a pair of dramatic, one-goal wins against North Attleboro and Mansfield.
“Javonte has really grown into a great player over the years and now is proving it on the field his senior year as a strong leader and captain,” said Taunton head coach Jesue Lopes. “He’s not the most vocal player on the field but definitely leading the team with his positive attitude and through his actions. This past week it happened to come from some amazing goals and assists when we needed them the most. We are looking forward to this week’s performances.”
Coming off a tough loss to league-leading Franklin, Taunton got off to a perfect start against North, scoring in the opening minute. Fernandes picked up the assist on Xavier Mercado’s opener. Against the run of play, Fernandes made it 2-0 after half an hour when he pounced on a loose ball in the box. North battled back and equalized with just seconds left on the clock. Rather than settling for a draw, Taunton sped into the attacking third and won a corner. Christian Rodriguez played it short to Fernandes, who burst into the penalty area and squeezed a shot through traffic for his second of the day and the game-winner with the final kick of the ball. Fernandes added a goal on Friday against Mansfield, as Taunton jumped out to a three-goal lead only to hold off a late Hornets charge and pull out the 3-2 win.
