Milford junior Aidan Baum has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Jan. 22 through Jan. 28. Baum is the 19th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year and sixth in the winter season.

Baum (35-3 this season) won the individual title at 144 pounds at this weekend’s Hockomock League Wrestling Championships, held at Foxboro High. He was one of five Hawks to win their respective weight class, helping Milford win the team title at the tournament, which was restored this winter after switching to a different format for several seasons, with 233.5 points. That was seven points better than Taunton in second.

“Since moving up to 144 from 113 pounds last year, Aidan is wrestling with high energy and physicality,” said Milford head coach PJ Boccia. “He is constantly looking to score and stays on the offense all match. He is a junior captain who leads by example and he is wrestling at his best as we near the postseason.”

Baum, a junior captain, won his 100th career match earlier this season (118-14 career record), as Milford rolled to a fourth straight Kelley-Rex dual meet title. On Saturday, he entered the league championships as the top seed at 144 pounds and dominated all three of his matches to win the title. He took down Joseph Brucato of North Attleboro 13-0 in the first round, beat fourth seed John Mandeville of Taunton 13-3 in the semifinals, and then defeated second seed Max Kupferman of Canton 17-1 in the final. Baum was joined by Derek Marcolini (113), Robby Lyons (126), Michael Boulanger (138), and Tony Dew (285) as Milford winners. For his career, he’s a two-time state finalist and a two-time sectional finalist. This was Milford’s first team title at the league meet.

Sarah Dumas

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Franklin senior Sarah Dumas has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Jan. 15 through Jan. 21. Dumas is the 18th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year and fifth in the winter season.

Dumas won three events during Thursday’s dual meet win over Attleboro, helping the Panthers earn a narrow win to complete a perfect league campaign and win a second straight Kelley-Rex indoor title. Over the weekend, Dumas competed in three events at the MSTCA D1 Relays, helping the Panthers rally to finish in a first-place tie with Newton North.

“Sarah Dumas has had an outstanding season to date,” said Franklin head coach Paul Trovato. She has set the school record in the hurdles and was a member of three relays that scored at the Division 1 Relay Meet. The Shot Put Team finished first and the other relays Sarah was on, the High Jump and the Hurdles, finished second. Sarah has been outstanding in all of the meets this season.”

On Thursday night at the TRACK at New Balance, Dumas took first in three events, winning the high jump with a leap of 5-04.00, the long jump with a distance of 16-05.00, and the 55M hurdles in a time of 8.55. She won the high jump by six inches and the long jump by 17 inches. Franklin won the meet 52-48 to finish 5-0 in the league and take home the Kelley-Rex title. On Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center, Dumas was part of the 4×50 Shuttle Hurdles team that finished second in a time of 30.54 (just 0.44 behind Westford Academy), she threw the shot put 10.13, which was good for fifth overall (teammate Lily Deforge took first with a throw of 11.74), and she finished second in the high jump at 1.57M (just 0.05M behind the athlete from Central Catholic). Franklin had two shot put teams, which took first and second place, while the high jump and shuttle hurdles teams each took second, helping the Panthers finish in a dead heat with Newton North on 36 points.

Player of the Week: Nate Garstka, King Philip Hockey

Nate Garstka

By HockomockSports.com Staff

King Philip senior Nate Garstka has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Jan. 8 through Jan. 14. Garstka is the 17th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year and fourth in the winter season.

Garstka more than doubled his goal total for the season with four goals over two games, as KP won a pair of league games, including a stunning 4-0 victory over previously undefeated Canton on Saturday night at the Foxboro Sports Center. The wins keep KP in a first-place tie with Franklin atop the Kelley-Rex division.

Coming off a tough loss to Taunton, the Warriors bounced back this week starting with a 5-1 win over North Attleboro on Wednesday. Garstka added the final goal of the game. On Saturday, defending D2 champ Canton paid a visit, but it was the Warriors who controlled the game from the start. Garstka scored once in each period. He opened the scoring with a deft touch in front of goal, redirecting a shot from the point into the bottom corner. With Canton ramping up the pressure in the second, Garstka collected a loose puck in the slot, spun, and fired a shot over the goalie’s shoulder. As KP was managing the final period, keeping the Bulldogs at arm’s length, Garstka got a head of steam entering the zone, cut across the front of goal, and sniped the top corner to complete his hat trick and effectively seal the win.

Player of the Week: Julia Flynn, Franklin Hockey

Julia Flynn

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Franklin junior Julia Flynn has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Jan. 1 through Jan. 7. Flynn is the 16th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year and third in the winter season.

Flynn continues to be one of the best attacking threats in the Hockomock League and she lifted the Panthers to a big league win over rival King Philip this week. It was her third straight game with at least two points and second game in a row that she scored the game-winner as Franklin got back to .500 in league play.

“Julia’s been amazing,” said Franklin coach Mike Lubin after the win over KP. “She’s a captain this year and I’ve just been so impressed. She leads by example 100 percent.”

Flynn started her scoring run over the holiday break. She scored a hat trick in a tough 4-3 loss to Leominster, finding the back of the net shorthanded, on the power play, and even strength. A couple days later, she had a hand in both goals as the Panthers bounced back with a 2-0 win over Weymouth. Flynn scored the opener with a nice move up the boards and assisted Haley Wernig’s empty net goal to seal the victory. On Saturday afternoon against KP, Flynn was a constant menace, repeatedly testing Warriors goalie Kiki Lynch. In the first period, Flynn got a touch on Maddie O’Brien’s shot to score the opener. O’Brien would score twice on the power play, both coming on rebounds of Flynn shots. In OT, Flynn fired Franklin to the win. She moved from left to right across the zone and roofed a forehand wrister to close out a four-point game and a 4-3 win.

Player of the Week: Jillian Doherty, Taunton Basketball

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Taunton junior Jillian Doherty has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Dec. 17 through Dec. 31. Doherty is the 15th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year and second in the winter season.

Doherty has been excellent at the start of the season, helping Taunton jump out to a perfect 5-0 start, which is the best run to start a season since the Tigers joined the Hockomock League. The junior forward has scored in double digits in each of Taunton’s five games and is one of the reasons that the Tigers have averaged more than 60 points per game (second best in the league).

“Jillian has been a constant force for us so far this year,” said Taunton coach Gretchen Rodrigues. “She has been shutting down the tallest girls on opposing teams with her tough defense and poising herself as an offensive threat. She has scored many key baskets for us and has secured essential rebounds on both offense and defense at pivotal moments in the games.”

Over the holiday period, Doherty continued her strong play. She scored 16 points in a big win over North Attleboro and added 13 five days later as the Tigers rolled to a win over Canton to move into first place in the Kelley-Rex division. During Taunton’s annual holiday tournament, Doherty scored a team-high 21 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and had four blocks in a win over Holliston. She scored seven of Taunton’s 11 points in the fourth quarter to help the Tigers hold on for a close win. The following afternoon, Taunton knocked off previously unbeaten Durfee and Doherty led the way with 17 points.

Player of the Week: Nate Katznelson, Sharon Basketball

Nate Katznelson

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Sharon senior Nate Katznelson has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Dec. 10 through Dec. 16. Katznelson is the 14th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year and first in the winter season.

Katznelson started the season on fire for the Eagles, helping them get off to a 2-0 start with a pair of impressive road wins. He has scored 71 points in two games, knocking down 12 three-pointers in the process, while leading the team in rebounding. With Katznelson leading the way, Sharon has scored 77 and 75 points in its opening two games and avenged half of its four losses from 2022-23.

“Nate has a had a tremendous start to the season,” said Sharon head coach Andrew Ferguson. “His size and shooting ability have allowed us to stretch our offense and his defensive presence in the lane allows us to be more aggressive on the perimeter.”

In the season opener at Taunton, Katznelson was on fire from the start. The 6-foot-5 forward buried six threes and knocked down 12 shots from inside the arc. His 18 made field goals in a single game set a new program record, finishing with 47 points — the second most in a game in program history. He scored 22 in the first half alone, helping the Eagles jump out to a 38-33 lead. Katznelson nailed three triples in the fourth to help the Eagles hold off a comeback from the Tigers and secure the win. He continued his hot shooting on Friday at Canton, leading the Eagles with 24 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks. Katznelson added six more threes against the Bulldogs.

Player of the Week: Lincoln Moore, Foxboro Football

Lincoln Moore

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Foxboro senior Lincoln Moore has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 27 through Dec. 3. Moore is the 13th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.

Moore capped off his three-year varsity career with a standout performance on Friday night in the Div. 5 Super Bowl against top seed Hanover at Gillette Stadium. The senior linebacker made plays all over the field for the Warriors, including a crucial red zone interception and a rushing touchdown, as Foxboro rolled to a 48-21 victory and its first state title since 2006.

“Lincoln’s performance in the Super Bowl personified his entire three-year career as a starting linebacker,” said Foxboro coach Jack Martinelli. “He amassed 316 tackles to establish a program record, while entrusted with the responsibility of making all the front adjustments. One of the best that Foxboro has ever had.”

Foxboro fell behind 7-0 but scored the next 28 points to get control. After giving up the touchdown on the opening drive, the Warriors clamped down defensively, with Moore leading the way. Notably, he sniffed out a screen pass on third down, making the tackle in the backfield to force a punt. The punter skewed his kick, which Foxboro recovered deep in Hanover territory and two plays later scored a TD. With less than 30 seconds left in the first half, Moore went over the top of the pile for a one-yard rushing score that put Foxboro up 35-14. Hanover tried to get back into the game early in the third quarter, but on second down from the Foxboro 15, Moore read a slant on the outside and picked off a pass to end the Hawks drive. He finished the game with 11 tackles, including two for a loss.

Player of the Week: Nick Araujo, Milford Football

Nick Araujo

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Milford senior Nick Araujo has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 20 through Nov. 26. Araujo is the 12th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.

Araujo capped off a stellar career with three touchdowns and 25 of his team’s 31 points in a Thanksgiving Day victory over Taunton. As a running back, linebacker, punter, and kicker, he helped the Hawks finish second in the Kelley-Rex division, take the top seed in Div. 3, and reach the state semifinal for the third straight year.

In the final game against the Tigers, Araujo rushed for a pair of scores and caught one, kicked a field goal, two extra points, and rushed for a two-point conversion, as the Hawks won 31-21. He got the game started with a 62-yard TD reception from Owen Callahan in the first quarter. After Taunton took a 7-6 lead, Jason Stokes returned the kick for a touchdown, with Araujo finding the end zone on a conversion rush to make it 14-7. Taunton tied the game going into halftime, but Araujo rushed for a pair of scores in the third quarter, one from three yards and the other from 17, and kicked both extra points. He added three more points with a 39-yard kick in the fourth quarter, which put Milford up by 17 at the time.

Player of the Week: Joey Carney, Oliver Ames Soccer

Joey Carney

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Oliver Ames senior Joey Carney has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 13 through Nov. 19. Carney is the 11th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.

Following a stellar regular season (15 goals and five assists), Carney took his game to another level in the postseason, scoring six goals and recording an assist to lead the Tigers to a second consecutive Div. 2 state championship. The Bentley-commit had a hand in three game-winning goals in five playoff matches, including the overtime winner in the final to seal the title.

“Joey Carney has made a claim to be the premier player in all of Massachusetts during his amazing playoff form,” said Oliver Ames head coach John Barata. “Joey demonstrated pure skill and incredible soccer ability in the last five games of the year. He was great all season long but absolutely turned it on when it mattered most. Big time players show up in big time moments and Joey performed like and All American when we needed it most!”

Carney, who nearly didn’t play for OA this season, opened the playoffs with the third goal in a 3-0 win over Chicopee Comp in the first round. He ran onto a ball from Luke Churchill and went five-hole on the keeper. In the Sweet Sixteen against Masconomet, Carney scored all three in another 3-0 victory. He scored twice in the first half and then completed his hat trick with a goal in the final minute. The quarterfinal was a tight game at Hingham, but Carney played a through ball to Mike Morais, who slotted home the game-winner in the 65th minute. Melrose took a lead in the state semifinal, but Carney delivered a moment of magic to bring the Tigers level in the second half, cutting inside on his right foot and curling a shot into the top corner from 20 yards. Craig Churchill’s overtime header would send the Tigers to the final

In the championship game, OA had numerous chances in regulation, including four good shots on goal by Carney, only to be stymied by Wakefield keeper Andrew Valley. In the third minute of OT, Carney finally found the breakthrough. He picked the ball up 25 yards from goal and danced his way past a couple of defenders before sliding his shot just inside the far post and closing out his career with back-to-back titles.

Player of the Week: Raena Crandall, Franklin Field Hockey

Raena Crandall

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Franklin junior Raena Crandall has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 6 through Nov. 12. Crandall is the 10th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.

Crandall has four goals, including two game winners, and four assists during Franklin’s playoff run, as the Panthers have rolled into their second state semifinal in the past three seasons. The five-time defending Kelley-Rex champions have outscored their three playoff opponents 14-0, maintaining their unbeaten record (20-0-1) this fall. Crandall was second in the Hock in scoring during the regular season, just one point behind Foxboro’s Mary Collins.

“Raena Crandall is a player I am extremely honored to coach,” said Franklin head coach Michelle Hess. “Raena gives 110% effort and energy every single game and practice. She is tenacious… hard to defend due to her ability to mix up her shots, her stick skills, and her speed.”

The playoffs started with a matchup against No. 29 Beverly. Franklin was held scoreless for 15 minutes, but Crandall scored off an assist from Haley Wernig to put the hosts in front going into halftime. Crandall added a second goal in the second half, as Franklin pulled away for a 5-0 win. In the Sweet Sixteen, Franklin stormed out of the gates to put No. 13 Winchester on its heels. Crandall again opened the scoring with a nice drag move at the top of the circle and then rounding the goalie to slide in what turned out to be a game-winner. She also had three assists in the 6-0 victory. On Saturday, Franklin beat No. 5 Acton-Boxboro 3-0 to reach the Final Four. Crandall assisted on Chloe Essam’s second goal and added the third, lifting a cross from Sophia Cuneo over the pad of the goalie to seal the win.
