Taunton senior pitcher Cate Larson has been named the 2025 HockomockSports.com Softball Player of the Year. Larson stepped into the starting role for the Tigers and took complete control, leading Taunton to its third straight Kelley-Rex division title, a second consecutive 25-0 record, and to the team’s fifth consecutive Division 1 state championship.
“Cate had a dominant season overall,” said HockomockSports.com Editor Ryan Lanigan. “She was one of the best pitchers in the entire state and then she added a big boost to the lineup with her bat. Her demeanor is something you don’t see very often. She remained so cool and calm in the circle, no matter the situation. She had no fear going against anyone, and that was on full display in the biggest games of the year.”
Larson, who has been on the team since the end of her eighth-grade season, put together a memorable season in her final year with the Tigers. In the circle, the Georgetown commit was flat out dominant, tossing 143.2 innings with an impressive 230 strikeouts and an outstanding 0.63 ERA. Over the course of her career, she amassed 442 strikeouts—good for fifth all-time at Taunton High, just behind the 2019 HockomockSports.com Player of the Year Kelsey White (485).
She made Taunton’s dangerous lineup even more formidable. At the plate, she hit .397 with a .493 on-base percentage and a .714 slugging percentage. She tallied five doubles, five home runs (including one in the state championship game), 11 walks, and drove in 31 runs.
“Cate is an absolute GOAT on the mound, expertly mixing speeds and pitches to keep hitters off balance,” said Taunton head coach Michelle Raposo. “Her confidence and poise under pressure were evident all season long, and she’s a true leader both on and off the field.”
Larson is the fifth Taunton player to earn this honor in the past seven years it has been awarded. She joins Sam Lincoln (2024), Kelsey White (2019), Kya Enos (2018), and Aimee Kistner (2016) as the Tigers to receive this honor. All but two of the recipients of this award have been pitchers; previous pitchers include Milford’s Shannon Smith (2013), North Attleboro’s Meg Colleran (2014) and Kelly Colleran (2022), King Philip’s Kali Magane (2015), White, and Kistner.
Honorable Mentions: Lola Ronayne (Attleboro), McCoy Walsh (King Philip), Aniyah Bailey (Taunton)

HockomockSports First Team

Taunton sophomore catcher Aniyah Bailey followed up her memorable debut season last year with another terrific campaign this spring. She was once again one of the most dangerous bats in the league and was also a rock behind the plate, this time working with batterymate Cate Larson to help the Tigers go undefeated for the second straight year and win another Division 1 championship. She led the Hockomock League in the regular season in hits (36), batting average (.529), and RBI (54). Her dominance at the dish continued in the postseason, hitting .500 across five playoff games. With the postseason included, she led the team with a .524 average, .554 on-base percentage, 1.037 slugging percentage, eight doubles, 10 home runs, and 58 RBI, while also adding a pair of triples and scoring 34 runs. “Her softball IQ allows her to confidently call pitches for our Division I-bound ace, Cate Larson,” said Taunton head coach Michelle Raposo. “She’s a brick wall behind the plate, and few even dare to test her arm on the bases. At the plate, she’s an offensive powerhouse who consistently delivers in clutch moments.”
Katie Berg – Oliver Ames – Infield
Oliver Ames sophomore Katie Berg continued to emerge as one of the top players in the Hockomock League this spring. She made a splash as a freshman last year for the Tigers and took the next step this season, establishing herself as a top defensive infielder as well as one of the top bats in the league. In 22 games, she hit .471 with nine home runs, 28 RBI, 31 runs scored, and 21 stolen bases, posting a 1.000 slugging percentage and a 1.556 OPS. She was voted as the Hockomock League Davenport division MVP by the coaches. “Katie Berg was the catalyst of the Oliver Ames offense this year,” said Oliver Ames head coach Lindsey Allison. “Her run production with those two stats is over half the runs scored in the entire season for OA. Katie’s batting average with runners in scoring position is .619. On top of this, she starts every game at shortstop and has had 44 assists and 49 putouts on the year with her cannon of an arm. Katie’s contributions to the team would make her an all star on any team she was on and instantly make them better with her in the lineup.”

In center field, she’s a natural leader, consistently pushing her fellow outfielders beyond their comfort zones and helping them elevate their game.”

She led the team with 22 RBI and three home runs while batting .349 during the regular season. She was also a steady defensive presence, committing just one error all year in center field. “She is a tremendous centerfielder who steals hits away from opponents in all different directions, charging balls, and going back,” said Foxboro head coach Mark Maguire. “Her timely hitting in the playoffs helped us advance to the state semifinals.”

She also stepped in at catcher due to injuries and didn’t have a passed ball in 13.1 innings behind the plate. At third base, she had a .930 fielding percentage. “Maryellen was a great senior leader this year in her second year as captain,” said North Attleboro head coach Jamie Duffy. “She was a vocal leader on and off the field, committed to helping her team get better every single day. She took any moment she saw to step up and help guide the younger players on the team. This leadership was a key component to the success we saw this season.”

Her performance on the mound led the way to 10 wins. She nabbed 100 strikeouts, mixing her riseball and changeup effectively. She also was great defensively on the mound with no errors, and only one overall on the season. She came up and came through time and again in clutch situations throughout the season. No matter what was asked of her, she put her head down and got to work to get it done. She was truly a leader on and off the field in her work ethic and determined nature.”
Sophia Sacramone – Franklin – Pitcher
Franklin junior Sophia Sacramone emerged as a top pitcher in both the Hockomock League and beyond this season, helping the Panthers secure a home game in the state tournament, all while facing some of the best offenses in the state. Coach of the Year – Mark Maguire, Foxboro
Foxboro head coach Mark Maguire has been named the 2025 HockomockSports Softball Coach of the Year after leading the Warriors to their third straight Davenport division title, and to the state semifinals for the first time in program history.
“Foxboro entered the season with high expectations, and it’s not always easy to meet them, especially in the Hockomock League,” said HockomockSports.com Editor Ryan Lanigan. “By the end of the season, Maguire had the Warriors playing at their best and won some key games to clinch a share of the Davenport title. And then they used that momentum to reach the state semifinals by beating some tough teams.”
The Warriors finished the season 15-9, winning a share of the program’s third straight Davenport division title by winning its final three league games. The season also included non-league wins over St. Mary’s (D3 #11), Medway (D3 #16), and Somerset Berkley (D2 #21). In the playoffs, the Warriors had shutout wins over Hudson and St. Mary’s and then went on the road and knocked off Apponequet, the #3 seed in the Division 3 state tournament. Foxboro allowed the fewest runs (118) of any Davenport division team despite playing the most games.
This is the first time Maguire has earned Coach of the Year honors and fifth time a Davenport division coach has received the honor. Previous winners from the Davenport division include Canton’s Jennifer Robillard (2018) and Milford’s Steve DiVitto (2017) and Brian Macchi (2013).
Honorable Mentions: Mark Homer (Attleboro), Laura Whittaker (Stoughton), Michelle Raposo (Taunton)
