Player of the Week: Lincoln Moore, Foxboro Football

Lincoln Moore

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Foxboro senior Lincoln Moore has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 27 through Dec. 3. Moore is the 13th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.

Moore capped off his three-year varsity career with a standout performance on Friday night in the Div. 5 Super Bowl against top seed Hanover at Gillette Stadium. The senior linebacker made plays all over the field for the Warriors, including a crucial red zone interception and a rushing touchdown, as Foxboro rolled to a 48-21 victory and its first state title since 2006.

“Lincoln’s performance in the Super Bowl personified his entire three-year career as a starting linebacker,” said Foxboro coach Jack Martinelli. “He amassed 316 tackles to establish a program record, while entrusted with the responsibility of making all the front adjustments. One of the best that Foxboro has ever had.”

Foxboro fell behind 7-0 but scored the next 28 points to get control. After giving up the touchdown on the opening drive, the Warriors clamped down defensively, with Moore leading the way. Notably, he sniffed out a screen pass on third down, making the tackle in the backfield to force a punt. The punter skewed his kick, which Foxboro recovered deep in Hanover territory and two plays later scored a TD. With less than 30 seconds left in the first half, Moore went over the top of the pile for a one-yard rushing score that put Foxboro up 35-14. Hanover tried to get back into the game early in the third quarter, but on second down from the Foxboro 15, Moore read a slant on the outside and picked off a pass to end the Hawks drive. He finished the game with 11 tackles, including two for a loss.

Nick Araujo

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Milford senior Nick Araujo has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 20 through Nov. 26. Araujo is the 12th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.

Araujo capped off a stellar career with three touchdowns and 25 of his team’s 31 points in a Thanksgiving Day victory over Taunton. As a running back, linebacker, punter, and kicker, he helped the Hawks finish second in the Kelley-Rex division, take the top seed in Div. 3, and reach the state semifinal for the third straight year.

In the final game against the Tigers, Araujo rushed for a pair of scores and caught one, kicked a field goal, two extra points, and rushed for a two-point conversion, as the Hawks won 31-21. He got the game started with a 62-yard TD reception from Owen Callahan in the first quarter. After Taunton took a 7-6 lead, Jason Stokes returned the kick for a touchdown, with Araujo finding the end zone on a conversion rush to make it 14-7. Taunton tied the game going into halftime, but Araujo rushed for a pair of scores in the third quarter, one from three yards and the other from 17, and kicked both extra points. He added three more points with a 39-yard kick in the fourth quarter, which put Milford up by 17 at the time.

Player of the Week: Joey Carney, Oliver Ames Soccer

Joey Carney

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Oliver Ames senior Joey Carney has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 13 through Nov. 19. Carney is the 11th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.

Following a stellar regular season (15 goals and five assists), Carney took his game to another level in the postseason, scoring six goals and recording an assist to lead the Tigers to a second consecutive Div. 2 state championship. The Bentley-commit had a hand in three game-winning goals in five playoff matches, including the overtime winner in the final to seal the title.

“Joey Carney has made a claim to be the premier player in all of Massachusetts during his amazing playoff form,” said Oliver Ames head coach John Barata. “Joey demonstrated pure skill and incredible soccer ability in the last five games of the year. He was great all season long but absolutely turned it on when it mattered most. Big time players show up in big time moments and Joey performed like and All American when we needed it most!”

Carney, who nearly didn’t play for OA this season, opened the playoffs with the third goal in a 3-0 win over Chicopee Comp in the first round. He ran onto a ball from Luke Churchill and went five-hole on the keeper. In the Sweet Sixteen against Masconomet, Carney scored all three in another 3-0 victory. He scored twice in the first half and then completed his hat trick with a goal in the final minute. The quarterfinal was a tight game at Hingham, but Carney played a through ball to Mike Morais, who slotted home the game-winner in the 65th minute. Melrose took a lead in the state semifinal, but Carney delivered a moment of magic to bring the Tigers level in the second half, cutting inside on his right foot and curling a shot into the top corner from 20 yards. Craig Churchill’s overtime header would send the Tigers to the final

In the championship game, OA had numerous chances in regulation, including four good shots on goal by Carney, only to be stymied by Wakefield keeper Andrew Valley. In the third minute of OT, Carney finally found the breakthrough. He picked the ball up 25 yards from goal and danced his way past a couple of defenders before sliding his shot just inside the far post and closing out his career with back-to-back titles.

Player of the Week: Raena Crandall, Franklin Field Hockey

Raena Crandall

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Franklin junior Raena Crandall has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 6 through Nov. 12. Crandall is the 10th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.

Crandall has four goals, including two game winners, and four assists during Franklin’s playoff run, as the Panthers have rolled into their second state semifinal in the past three seasons. The five-time defending Kelley-Rex champions have outscored their three playoff opponents 14-0, maintaining their unbeaten record (20-0-1) this fall. Crandall was second in the Hock in scoring during the regular season, just one point behind Foxboro’s Mary Collins.

“Raena Crandall is a player I am extremely honored to coach,” said Franklin head coach Michelle Hess. “Raena gives 110% effort and energy every single game and practice. She is tenacious… hard to defend due to her ability to mix up her shots, her stick skills, and her speed.”

The playoffs started with a matchup against No. 29 Beverly. Franklin was held scoreless for 15 minutes, but Crandall scored off an assist from Haley Wernig to put the hosts in front going into halftime. Crandall added a second goal in the second half, as Franklin pulled away for a 5-0 win. In the Sweet Sixteen, Franklin stormed out of the gates to put No. 13 Winchester on its heels. Crandall again opened the scoring with a nice drag move at the top of the circle and then rounding the goalie to slide in what turned out to be a game-winner. She also had three assists in the 6-0 victory. On Saturday, Franklin beat No. 5 Acton-Boxboro 3-0 to reach the Final Four. Crandall assisted on Chloe Essam’s second goal and added the third, lifting a cross from Sophia Cuneo over the pad of the goalie to seal the win.

Player of the Week: Braden Shapiro, Oliver Ames Golf

Braden Shapiro

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Oliver Ames junior Braden Shapiro has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Oct. 16 through Oct. 22. Shapiro is the seventh player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.

Shapiro took the individual title at the Hockomock Golf Championships at Thorny Lea Golf Course in Brockton. He finished with a medalist round of 71, just one stroke better than Foxboro’s Zac Georgantas, helping the Tigers win the team title. As a team, OA shot a 219, four strokes better than second place Franklin.

“Braden is incredibly accurate tee to green and has been working very hard year round on his swing and short game at the Golf Academy of New England,” said Oliver Ames head coach Ryan Riley.

Shapiro’s medalist round including a one over par 36 on the front and an even par 35 on the back nine. He birdied the par three third hole to get back to even and added a birdie on the par five eighth. After a bogey on the par three ninth, Shapiro came right back with a birdie on the 10th. He had back-to-back bogeys on the 11th and 12th holes but got a birdie on the par four 14th to move back to one over. Shapiro closed with four straight pars, holding onto his one-stroke lead to the end. In addition to the team title at the Hock Championships, Shapiro and the Tigers took the Davenport division title thanks to a two-stroke win over second-place Mansfield on Oct. 6. Shapiro shot a 38 in that match.

Player of the Week: Jess Wright, Canton Volleyball

Jess Wright

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Canton senior Jess Wright has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Oct. 9 through Oct. 15. Wright is the sixth player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.

Wright has been leading the way for the Bulldogs this season, helping Canton score three big wins last week and continue their unbeaten (14-0) start. She had double-digit kills in all three matches, as Canton beat Mansfield, Attleboro, and Bishop Feehan to move closer to securing the league title.

“Jess Wright had an outstanding week against strong competition, including two top 10 division 1 teams, totaling 45 kills, 34 digs, 4 aces, and 5 blocks,” said Canton head coach Pat Cawley. “Jess is a complete player, excelling in both offense and defense. Most importantly, Jess is a team player always supporting her teammates and wanting what is best for the team.”

On Tuesday, Canton kicked off the week with a dominating performance against Mansfield. Wright finished with 13 kills and eight digs, helping the Bulldogs at the net and in the back row. Two nights later, Wright was outstanding on the outside in a battle with Kelley-Rex leader Attleboro. She got off to a great start with seven kills in the first set alone, on her way to 22 on the night, as the Bulldogs pulled out a 3-1 win. She added nine digs, three aces, and two blocks. It was only the second time this season that Canton had dropped a set, and it completed a clean sweep of the 2022 Kelley-Rex co-champs. Less than 24 hours later, Canton welcomed D1 contender Bishop Feehan and swept the Shamrocks. Wright had another big all-around match with 10 kills, 17 digs, two blocks, and an ace.

Player of the Week: Ella Morgan, King Philip Field Hockey

Ella Morgan

By HockomockSports.com Staff

King Philip freshman Ella Morgan has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Oct. 2 through Oct. 8. Morgan is the fifth player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.

Morgan has been a key part of the KP attack in her first varsity season and she was instrumental in the Warriors picking up three wins last week, scoring five goals and dishing out an assist as KP beat North Attleboro, Hopkinton, and Canton.

“She’s been such a consistent player recording at least a point in all of our games,” said King Philip head coach Kaitlyn Wilder. “Coming into this season we were confident in our offense and then having Ella arrive to join in the mix was a pleasant surprise! Seeing her play in her first ever game and recording a hat trick was impressive…then to think she’s kept up with that pace since then and now leads our team in goals with 15. She’s been incredible, a great addition to our team and has gelled with all the girls. The upperclassmen love the spark she brings to this team and enjoy having her by their side. She has been a key contributor in our team success so far this season!”

KP opened the week against North and the Warriors scored three unanswered goals in the second half to win 5-2. Morgan scored twice and assisted on a third to help KP avoid the upset. On Wednesday, KP took on a Hopkinton team ranked in the top 10 in Div. 2 and came away with a comfortable 7-1 win. Morgan had one of the goals for KP. Two days later, the Warriors faced Canton in a back-and-forth battle of two of the top programs in the Hock. Morgan scored both of KP’s goals in the 2-0 win. Her first came with 16 seconds before halftime, knocking in a rebound after Mara Boldy’s shot was saved, then added another with just 17 seconds left in the third, finding the bottom corner after a long run and nice pass from Boldy left Morgan one-on-one with the goalie.

Thomas has led the way for the Tigers this season, finishing first in all three meets to help the three-time defending league champions get off to a perfect start. The senior, who finished second behind teammate Ryan Sarney at last year’s league championship meet, also set a course record in last week’s win over Sharon.

“Brendan made OA history by breaking one of the oldest and fastest course records in the Hockomock League,” said OA coach Kyle Sousa. “Brendan has pushed himself to new limits throughout the last four years and it was a great day for our program to see one of the all time OA greats take the record and the victory in dominating fashion.”

After taking first in the meets at Stoughton and Foxboro, and finishing seventh in the Ocean State Invitational 5K (in a time of 15:41.1), Thomas set a new record in his first home meet of the season. He took first in a time of 15:42, breaking a 10-year-old Borderland State Park course record, which had been set in 2013 by King Philip’s Owen Gonser. Thomas will be back at his home course on Tuesday against Mansfield and can help the Tigers clinch at least a share of a fourth straight Davenport division title.
