Oliver Ames sophomore Mitchell Callender has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for May 26 through June 1. Callender is the 37th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and 10th in the spring season.

Callender continued his breakout season with a strong performance at the MIAA Div. 3 Outdoor Track and Field Championships that were held over the weekend at Westfield High. He took home the shot put title and finished second in the discus and third in the javelin.

“Mitchell Callender has established himself as one of the elite throwers in Massachusetts,” said Oliver Ames head coach Kyle Sousa. “With an undefeated Hockomock season in both the shot put and the discus, he was primed for a big showing when the competition heated up at the state meet. Even so, no one could have anticipated the 59-foot throw he produced to win the shot put title. Mitchell is testing some of the best marks ever produced in the Hock, and coming away from Divisionals with top three placements in three different events was incredible both for Mitchell himself and for the team.”

Callender came into the state meet on the back of an impressive showing at the annual Hockomock Championships held at Mansfield High. He won the shot put and discus titles and finished second in the javelin. At states, Callender won the shot put title with a throw of 59-5.25, which was four feet farther than he threw at Hocks and three feet farther than second place. In the discus, Callender recorded a throw of 164-4, seven feet farther than his winning throw at Hocks and just two feet behind the first-place finisher. The top two were more than 10 feet better than the next closest competitors. Callender finished third in the javelin with a throw of 165-1 (slightly farther than his throw at Hocks).

Player of the Week: Alex D’Amadio, King Philip Track

Alex D'Amadio
By HockomockSports.com Staff

King Philip junior Alex D’Amadio has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for May 19 through May 25. D’Amadio is the 36th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and ninth in the spring season.

D’Amadio was the lone athlete (male or female) to win three individual titles at this weekend’s Hockomock Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held at Mansfield High. The junior won both the 400 meters and the 400-meter hurdles, while also taking first in the triple jump, helping the Warriors finish second to Oliver Ames with 80 points.

“Alex D’Amadio is a phenomenal competitor,” said King Philip coach Jill Lawrence. “Once the gun goes off for a race, she will set her mind and find a way to win. Alex is also one of the most versatile track and field athletes in the league. We had some hard decisions for her entry in the Hock championships since she can likely score in seven different individual events. Her mental toughness on Saturday was an important component of her being a three time Hock champion.”

For the second year in a row, D’Amadio set the pace in the 400 meters. She finished with a time of 59.63, crossing the line a second ahead of Foxboro’s Lauren Bober. D’Amadio also took the title in the 400 hurdles, her time of 1:04.15 was half a second faster than Canton’s Chloe Dubuisson. A former long jump champ (as a freshman), D’Amadio took part in the triple jump this weekend and won her third title of the day. Her jump of 35-8.00 was nearly nine inches farther than runner-up Frankie Spagna of Mansfield.

Player of the Week: Izzy Trull, Franklin Tennis

Izzy Trull
By HockomockSports.com Staff

Franklin senior Izzy Trull has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for May 12 through May 18. Trull is the 35th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and eighth in the spring season.

Trull won all three of her singles matches this week, helping Franklin to a perfect 3-0 week and keeping the Panthers in the mix for the Kelley-Rex division title going into the final week of the regular season. Franklin is just a game behind league-leading Sharon with the teams scheduled to close out the season on Wednesday afternoon.

“Izzy was amazing last week going 3-0 in three days,” said Franklin head coach Bob Pingeton. “I thought she played her best match of the year and possibly career on senior night against Taunton, winning a second set in a tiebreaker after losing first set. More impressively she came back after that two hour match and beat Sharon the next day. She is such a great competitor and one of the few players who can adjust their game mid-match to overcome an opponent.”

Franklin entered the week after a tough 3-2 loss to rival King Philip over the weekend. Trull did her part at first singles, winning a tight match 7-6 (4), 7-5 to earn the first point for the Panthers. On Monday, Franklin bounced back with a sweep of Taunton. Trull dropped the first set 4-6, but rallied to win the second, 7-6, and a third set super tiebreak, 10-3, to secure the win at first singles. The following day, Franklin secured its biggest win of the season, beating Sharon 3-2. Trull dominated her match at second singles, dropping only one game and getting a valuable point for the team. Franklin followed that big win by sweeping Attleboro in a match that was completed with pro sets. Trull picked up another win, this time at second singles.

Player of the Week: Amelia Collins, Attleboro Lacrosse

Amelia Collins
By HockomockSports.com Staff

Attleboro junior Amelia Collins has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for May 5 through May 11. Collins is the 34th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and seventh in the spring season.

Collins scored five goals, including the dramatic overtime winner, in Attleboro’s thrilling come-from-behind win over Mansfield on Attack Cancer Night. The game helped raise money for Collins’ fundraising efforts in honor of her father Shane, who coached the Bombardiers the past two seasons and is currently battling cancer.

“Mia has been a driving force on the field all season, bringing relentless energy that elevates the entire team,” said Attleboro head coach Kerri Beland. “Her consistency as a scorer has been key to our success, and last week she stepped up in a big way—netting eight goals (of our 15 total goals for the week), including a thrilling overtime game-winner in our AttackCancer game. Mia has an ability to turn up the intensity in crucial moments and that sets her apart and inspires everyone around her. Very proud of her!”

Attleboro went into the fourth quarter trailing Mansfield 9-6 and in danger of a second loss to the Hornets in five days, but the Bombardiers rallied. Following a forced turnover, Attleboro grabbed the lead in the closing seconds only for the Hornets to race down from the ensuing draw to tie and force OT. Isabella Cavallini won the opening draw of the extra period and quickly got the ball ahead to Collins, who delivered the perfect ending to an emotional night for her and the Bombardiers. Two days later, Collins scored three goals and had one draw control against King Philip.

Player of the Week: Travis Johnson, Taunton Volleyball

Travis Johnson
By HockomockSports.com Staff

Taunton senior Travis Johnson has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for April 28 through May 4. Johnson is the 33rd athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and sixth in the spring season.

Johnson has been instrumental in Taunton’s terrific start to the season. The outside hitter leads the team in kills, as the Tigers have started 10-1, have won eight straight matches, avenged their lone loss with a sweep of league rival Milford, and clinched at least a share of the inaugural Hockomock League boys volleyball title.

“Travis is a quiet kid off the court but a tiger on the court,” said Taunton head coach Toby Chaperon. “He plays hard at all times and is someone we lean on heavily to be a force in every way and to also be a leader.”

Taunton started a three-match week with a visit from Milford to the Rabouin Field House. Johnson delivered at the net, with 15 kills and six blocks. He had 13 kills over the first two sets to help the Tigers jump out to a 2-0 lead and had four blocks in the third to help Taunton rally and complete the sweep. The following day, Johnson again led the Taunton attack, recording 19 kills, two aces, and three blocks in a four-set win against Barnstable. Two days later, Taunton completed a perfect week with a sweep of King Philip. Johnson added 15 kills and two more blocks to help the Tigers clinch a share of the program’s and the league’s first boys volleyball title.

Player of the Week: Myles Brown, Mansfield Track

Myles Brown
By HockomockSports.com Staff

Mansfield senior Myles Brown has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for April 21 through April 27. Brown is the 32nd athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and fifth in the spring season.

Brown, a University of Rhode Island-commit, has been a key to the Hornets getting off to a perfect 3-0 start to the dual meet season and then this week added a pair of event wins at the annual Warrior Invitational at Foxboro High. He won both the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints on Thursday against the statewide field.

“Myles has had a fantastic first month of the outdoor season,” said Mansfield head coach Kevin Butera. “He has set new personal bests in the 100m and 200m against some great Hock competition thus far and was able to pull off a double Gold performance in close races at the Warrior Invite over vacation week. Myles is a great representative of our program with how hard he works at practice and the high level he competes at during meets. Anyone who competes with Myles can tell you his energy and drive is infectious and truly makes those around him better.”

In the opening meet of the season against rival Oliver Ames, Brown took first in both the 100m (10.8) and the 200m (22.2) to help seal a win for the Hornets. He followed that up with a win in the 200m (22.2) against North Attleboro. In Mansfield’s third dual meet at Foxboro, Brown won the 100m in a time of 10.7 and the 200m in a time of 22.1. He returned to Sam Berns Community Field this week and pulled off a pair of narrow event wins. He won the 100m in a time of 11.21, which was just 0.03 faster than the second-place runner from Dennis-Yarmouth. Brown also won the 200m by the same margin over the same opponent, finishing with a time of 22.66. Mansfield travels to Stoughton (3-0) on Tuesday with a chance at winning at least a share of the Davenport division title.

Player of the Week: Liv Petrillo, King Philip Softball

Liv Petrillo
By HockomockSports.com Staff

King Philip senior Liv Petrillo has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for April 14 through April 20. Petrillo is the 31st athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and fourth in the spring season.

Petrillo caught fire at the plate last week, racking up six hits and four homers in three games, driving in nine runs for the unbeaten Warriors. The Providence College-commit helped KP add three more wins to stay in a first place tie with rival Taunton atop the Kelley-Rex division standings.

“Liv had such a huge week for us,” said King Philip head coach Kate Fallon-Comeau. “She was a big spark for us offensively and came through with some timely hits and home runs. Her leadership both on and off the field has been great this season!”

In the opening game of the week, Petrillo went 1-for-3 and twice reached after being hit by a pitch, as KP ran away with an 11-0 win over Foxboro. Two days later, Petrillo smacked three homers and drove in six against visiting Milford. She hit a trio of two-run blasts, one each in the first, second, and fourth innings of the 12-0 victory. Petrillo added a fourth two-run homer just 24 hours later, as the Warriors picked up another 12-0 win, this time against Oliver Ames. On Monday morning, Petrillo kept swinging a hot bat, crushing a grand slam to lift KP to a 5-1 win against fellow D1 contender Bishop Feehan.

Player of the Week: Michael Huntington, Attleboro Baseball

Michael Huntington
By HockomockSports.com Staff

Attleboro senior Michael Huntington has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for April 7 through April 13. Huntington is the 30th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and third in the spring season.

Huntington was instrumental in Attleboro putting together a perfect 2-0 week, helping the Bombardiers pull out a pair of thrilling one-run wins against Milford and Mansfield and stay just one back in the loss column of league-leading Taunton. He went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored over the two games.

“Mikey has been the catalyst of our offense over the last two years,” said Attleboro head coach Steve Dunlea. “This past week against Milford and Mansfield it felt like he was always either on base or he was driving in the runs. The team feeds off his confidence and poise. He is a true leader for us.”

Attleboro had a week off in between its one-run loss to Taunton and the visit of Milford on Wednesday. The Bombardiers fell behind by four runs but put together a seventh inning rally to force extras. The rally started in the bottom of the fifth with Huntington delivering a two-out RBI double and then scored on a triple by Jeremy O’Hara that cut the deficit to one. Attleboro would tie it with a run in the seventh and win on a run in the eighth. Huntington was 2-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored, was hit by a pitch, and stole three bases in the game.

The following day at Mansfield, Attleboro scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh to secure another one-run win. Huntington doubled in the seventh to put runners at second and third with no outs and Brady Erwin delivered what turned out to be the game-winning sac fly. Huntington finished 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, drove in one and scored another run. He also made a great diving catch in foul territory with runners at second and third to get the Bombardiers out of a jam in the third inning.

Monaghan has been a force at the plate and in the circle for the Black Knights, helping them get off to a perfect 3-0 start to the season while outscoring teams 59-6. Stoughton leads the league in runs scored through three games and is tied for second in runs allowed. Monaghan has allowed three earned runs over 10 innings to pick up a pair of wins and has gone 6-for-10 at the plate with a homer and six runs driven in.

“Julia has brought such positivity and confidence to her game and her team this season,” said Stoughton head coach Laura Whittaker. “Her hard work in the offseason and every day at practice is evident in her play on the field. She is a tremendous pitcher, an offensive threat, and a wonderful teammate.”

In the season opener against Sharon, Monaghan picked up the win in the circle. She allowed three runs over five inning and struck out a pair, as the Black Knights rolled to a 17-3 victory. Monaghan also went 1-for-3 with an RBI. In a 24-2 win against division rival North Attleboro, Monaghan again went 1-for-3 (triple) at the plate, scoring a pair of runs, driving in one, and drawing a walk. On Friday against Southeastern, Monaghan was back in the circle and scattered three hits and allowed just one unearned run while striking out three in the 18-1 win. At the plate, she went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, and four RBI.

Player of the Week: Cole Hogencamp, Mansfield Lacrosse

Cole Hogencamp
By HockomockSports.com Staff

Mansfield sophomore Cole Hogencamp has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for March 24 through March 30. Hogencamp is the 28th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and first in the spring season.

After a terrific rookie season, Hogencamp came out firing on all cylinders in Mansfield’s thrilling overtime win against Nauset to kick off the new season. He scored 11 points, including the game-tying and game-winning goals to lead the Hornets to a come-from-behind win at Alumni Field.

Expectations are high for the Hornets this season, but Nauset was poised to spoil the season opener, leading by a couple of goals going into the final minute. Mansfield scored to pull within one and regained possession. With just a few seconds left in regulation, Hogencamp scored his seventh goal of the night to tie it and force overtime. Nauset had the first possession in OT, but the Hornets came up with a stop. On the other end, Mansfield cleared out to give Hogencamp room space. He made a move from the ‘X’ and, with his back to goal, leapt, spun, and fired a shot over the goalie to win the game. Hogencamp finished with eight goals and three assists, having a hand in 11 of Mansfield’s 17 goals.
