By HockomockSports.com Staff

North Attleboro senior Lucas Crovo has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 2 through Dec. 8. Crovo is the 14th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year.

Crovo put together an impressive all-around game for the Rocketeers at Gillette Stadium to help Big Red win its first Super Bowl title since 2002 with a 35-0 win over rival Mansfield in the Div. 3 Super Bowl. Crovo was the team’s leading tackler on the night and had an impact in all three phases of the game to help North secure the win.

“Lucas is the quarterback of our defense,” said North coach Mike Strachan. “He is a tenacious tackler and has the ability to cover the entire field. Lucas is one of the smartest football players I have the pleasure to coach and always took on the challenge of making his teammates better.”

In the state title game, Crovo came up with seven tackles, including two for loss, as the North defense tossed a shutout against its long-time rivals. He also came up with a huge catch in the third quarter. After quarterback Chase Frisoli scrambled to his side of the field, Crovo changed his route to get behind the defense and he was able to haul in the pass despite having a defender right in front of him. The 46-yard completion converted a big third down and helped North break the game open. He also returned punts and was the team’s long snapper to impact every facet of the game.

Player of the Week: Jack Buckley, Milford Football

Jack Buckley
By HockomockSports.com Staff

Milford senior Jack Buckley has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 25 through Dec. 1. Buckley is the 13th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year.

Buckley put together a stellar final game of his high school career, accounting for more than 250 yards of offense and four touchdowns to lead Milford to a thrilling 42-41 win in the Thanksgiving eve shootout with Taunton. It was the second highest scoring Thanksgiving game in Hockomock League history (behind only North Attleboro’s 55-36 win over Attleboro in 2010).

“Jack was fantastic tonight,” said Milford head coach Dale Olson. “Jack’s been playing all year but he broke a bone in his ankle in August so he hasn’t been himself. But I gave him the reins to the offense tonight, I only called six plays, he called the whole entire offense. That’s a testament to the type of kid he is and that’s why he’s probably going to go off and play college football in Division III, a lot of schools are on him. I couldn’t be more proud of that kid for what he did tonight.”

The senior quarterback was 14-of-21 for 166 yards and four scores through the air and also rushed 97 yards. He gave Milford its first lead at 14-7 with a 15-yard pass to Andrew Rivera and then added a 15-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Feliciano and an 8-yard score to Joey McGee to send the Hawks into halftime ahead 28-21. His fourth touchdown of the day was a 25-yard slant to Ish Kamara with 7:35 left in the fourth quarter that proved to be the difference after Taunton’s late two-point conversion attempt fell incomplete. His Thanksgiving performance moved Buckley into double digits for touchdown passes this season with 12.

Player of the Week: Jackson Mercieri, Oliver Ames Soccer

Jackson Mercieri
By HockomockSports.com Staff

Oliver Ames senior Jackson Mercieri has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 18 through Nov. 24. Mercieri is the 12th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year.

Mercieri scored the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute of Saturday afternoon’s Div. 2 state championship game against Hingham at Worcester State’s Coughlin Memorial Field. It clinched a third straight state title for the Tigers, the second in a row to be decided in overtime. After scoring three times in the regular season, the senior center back tallied twice in OA’s playoff run.

“He sacrificed individual glory for the team, and it was only fitting that he finished it for us,” said Oliver Ames head coach John Barata. “Jackson’s versatility in the playoffs made a huge difference for us.”

OA opened its playoffs with a 3-1 win against Melrose. After Nick Babanikas put the Tigers in front, Mercieri doubled the lead, taking a pass from Luke Churchill off his chest and finishing on the run. In the quarterfinal, Mercieri added an assist when he picked out Babanikas with a long ball from the back just two minutes into the game. His scoring is only part of his impact, as Mercieri is also part of one of the best defensive units in the state. The Tigers allowed only six goals in 22 games this year, including just one (to Melrose) in the tournament. The lone returning defender from last year, Mercieri was critical to the back line’s success.

In Saturday’s final, Mercieri showed his versatility, producing important moments at both ends of the pitch. He started at center back but was moved up front to partner Babanikas midway through the first half, helping OA tilt the field and control possession for the final 20 minutes of the first half. He moved back into defense after the break, helping the Tigers keep another clean sheet. After Hingham came close to a winner in double OT, Mercieri was moved back up top. Seconds later, Cyrus Hanjani’s dropped a perfect pass between the center backs to Mercieri, who brought it down, patiently waited a beat to create a shooting lane, and sealed the state title.

Player of the Week: Addyson Smock, Oliver Ames Volleyball

Addyson Smock

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Oliver Ames senior Addyson Smock has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 11 through Nov. 17. Smock is the 11th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year.

Smock recorded double-digit kills in each round of the state tournament, helping the Tigers make history by reaching the program’s first ever Div. 2 final. The University of Alabama-Birmingham-commit set a career-high for kills in the title game, as OA gave top seed Westboro a battle over four sets before the Rangers eventually claimed their third straight championship.

“Addyson was a focal point in our team dynamic — offensively and defensively,” said Oliver Ames head coach Chelsea Cunningham. “She was a force on the net through every match and brought the intensity and power throughout every game in the postseason. Without her, we would not have been in the position we were throughout the tournament…and it showed as she made every moment count through her.”

In the playoff opener against Grafton, OA (the No. 2 seed in D2) started with a dominant sweep of Grafton, despite missing a pair of starters. Smock had 10 kills in the win. In the Sweet Sixteen against Burlington, Smock had a dozen kills and four blocks, as the Tigers added another sweep. Against Longmeadow in the quarterfinal, Smock had 17 kills and four blocks to help the Tigers get past the previously unbeaten Lancers and book a place in their first Final Four.

At Framingham in the state semifinal, OA faced another unbeaten team, Billerica, that was fresh off a win against Canton in the last round. The Tigers survived a battle in the second set, before a dominant third clinched 3-0 victory over the Indians. Smock finished the match with 12 kills and a pair of blocks to help the playoff run continue. In the final against Westboro, OA got off to a tough start against the two-time defending champs but started to get Smock more involved in the second set, taking it 25-18. This was the third Hock opponent for the Rangers in a state final (King Philip in 2022 and Canton last year) and the first time they had dropped a set. OA gave Westboro all it could handle over the next two sets, just missing out on forcing it to five. Smock was the star for the Tigers. She set a new career-best with 20 kills and was a force on the block as well.

Player of the Week: Dylan Mullin, Mansfield Soccer

Dylan Mullin

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Mansfield senior Dylan Mullin has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Nov. 4 through Nov. 10. Mullin is the 10th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year.

Mullin put together a stellar performance on Saturday night at Alumni Field, scoring twice and dishing out three assists to help the Hornets run away with a 7-2 win against No. 18 Longmeadow and reach the Div. 2 quarterfinal. The senior winger was a constant threat all night against the Lancers, as Mansfield upped its total to 12 goals scored in two playoff games and broke the program’s record for goals scored in a season (62, previous was 56).

“His performance this week was unbelievable,” said Mansfield head coach Steve Sheridan. “He played with a passion that I haven’t seen in a very long time. Last week he did something at practice that I didn’t like and called him out on it and for ‘not having any passion for the game’ — I believe that his performance this week was to prove me wrong, and I love when the boys prove me wrong!”

After playing well during Mansfield’s 5-0 win over Hopkinton in the first round, Mullin, who led the team in points during the regular season (three goals and 14 assists) was practically unstoppable on the right side against the Lancers. Just seven minutes into the match, his in-swinging corner was headed home by Cooper Austin for an early lead. Midway through the first half, Mullin danced past a couple of Longmeadow defenders and curled a shot inside the far post to double the lead.

In the second half, Mansfield scored five goals to pull away. Less than 10 minutes after the break, Mullin played a one-two with Amro Hosny and got to the end line on the right. His low cross was turned in by Dominic Nassif. A minute later, Mullin nearly had his brace but the shot caromed off the bar. Two minutes after Longmeadow made it 4-2, Mullin drew and scored a penalty to restore the three-goal lead. In the 64th minute, he added a third assist, starting his run at midfield and eluding multiple Lancers, Mullin slipped a through ball into the path of Nassif, who completed his hat trick to make it 6-2.

Shannon Lane

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Canton sophomore Shannon Lane has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Oct. 28 through Nov. 3. Lane is the ninth athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year.

Lane continued her impressive sophomore campaign with a hat trick in Canton’s dominant win over Bishop Stang that kicked off the Div. 2 playoffs. The Hockomock League’s leading scorer in the regular season with 42 goals and 20 assists to help the Bulldogs win the Davenport division title and put up 115 goals as a team (second in the Hock behind only Franklin’s 125 goals).

In Saturday’s tournament opener, Canton asserted itself right from the opening whistle, scoring four times in the opening quarter. Lane got the first goal of the day, and the eventual winner, just 2:22 into the game, beating a pair of defenders and sliding a shot past the goalie. She added the third goal with a nice reverse and then completed her hat trick with 3:30 left in the game, finishing off a centering pass from Carolyn Schiavo to seal an emphatic win for the Bulldogs, who will face the winner of Dartmouth and Doherty in the Sweet Sixteen.

Player of the Week: Emilia Smith, Attleboro Cross-Country

Emilia Smith

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Attleboro senior Emilia Smith has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Oct. 21 through Oct. 27. Smith is the eighth athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year.

Smith put in a dominant performance on Saturday morning at the Wrentham Developmental Center, winning the girls title at the annual Hockomock Cross-Country Championships in a time of 17:59.7, which was more than 20 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. With Smith leading the way, Attleboro, which finished third in the Kelley-Rex during the dual meet season, took fourth overall with 124 points.

“Emilia had one goal this season and that one goal was to finish first at Hocks,” said Attleboro head coach Erin Bailey. “She was able to accomplish this by working hard during the regular season.”

One of several favorites coming into the league meet, Smith grabbed the lead early in the race and led almost from the start. She started to pull away from the pack, including North Attleboro’s Molly Galgoczy (18:20.0), Taunton’s Emersyn DePonte (18:35.9), and Canton’s Lauren Raffeto (18:54.7), with about a mile to go, building a sizable margin by the finish line. Smith, who finished second in 2023, was the lone female runner to break the 18-minute mark, bettering her time from last year by almost a minute. She is just the second female runner since 2016 to finish in under 18 minutes, joining Katie Sobieraj of Oliver Ames who finished in a time of 17:54.5 in 2022.

Foxboro junior Zac Georgantas has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Oct. 14 through Oct. 20. Georgantas is the seventh athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year.

Georgantas delivered his best round of the season last Thursday in the Hockomock Golf Championship at Wentworth Hills Country Club. He carded a five-under-par 66 to earn medalist honors and powered the Warriors, who also won a share of their first league crown in more than decade, to the team title. Foxboro finished with a team total of 217, five strokes better than second-place Canton. The day before, he won the individual title at the MIAA Division 2 South sectional tournament at Segregansett Country Club.

On top of his tremendous performances last week, Georgantas kicked this week off his style. After a long trip to Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Georgantas won the Division 2 state championship after a playoff.

“He’s probably one of the most complete players I’ve been around,” said Foxboro head coach Paul LaCerda. “He’s strong in all parts of his game, he doesn’t have a weakness. And his mental strength, the ability to maintain that equilibrium is impressive. He’s never out of a match, that’s a credit to him for being such a great player.”

After finishing the front nine at 1-under at Hocks with back-to-back birdies on four and five, Georgantas caught fire after the turn, shooting 4-under and finishing three strokes better than North Attleboro’s Tyson Laviano, who also had a terrific round at 2-under par; they were the only two golfers to shoot under par for the day. Georgantas made eight birdies in his round with five coming in a six hole stretch between the 10th and 15th holes. For the season, Georgantas was fourth in the league with an average round of 36.2 (third in average above par at 0.6).

At the Division 2 sectional tournament, Georgantas once again used a strong back nine to propel to the top of the leaderboard. He was one-over par on the front nine but had four birdies on the back nine to finish at 71 (one under) for the day, one stroke ahead of Norton’s Shawn Clary.

Player of the Week: Wyatt Herndon, Franklin Soccer

Franklin senior Wyatt Herndon has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Oct. 7 through Oct. 13. Herndon is the sixth athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year.

Herndon came up with goals in both of Franklin’s games this week, which was the biggest week of the season so far for the Panthers. Franklin hosted Sharon to start the week, and the Eagles entered the game at the top of the Kelley-Rex division. To wrap up the week, Franklin traveled to Mansfield, who was sitting at the top of the Davenport going into the game.

“Coming into the year, we expected Wyatt to be a consistent scoring threat and a key part of our attack,” said first-year Franklin head coach Nick Goldman. “Even though he had a slower start to the season in terms individual statistics, he has been a consistent leader and has worked extremely hard for us all year. As a team we knew this would be a big week for us and Wyatt certainly delivered with two key goals against Sharon and the game winner in the final minutes against Mansfield.”

In the statement win over the Eagles, Herndon scored a pair of goals to help Franklin land a 4-0 win. Moments after goalie Casey Flynn stopped a penalty kick, a failed clearance fell to Herndon at the top of the area and he quickly deposited a shot past the keeper to make it 3-0. Just two minutes later, Herndon got in behind the defense after a service from classmate Matt Honekamp and confidently slid one past the oncoming keeper. On the road in Mansfield, the Hornets netted an equalizing goal with just over 10 minutes to go to make it 1-1 but Herndon was able to get a pass from Connor Mason first, poking it past the keeper for the game-winner with just minutes left in a 2-1 victory.

Player of the Week: Autumn Simon, Sharon Soccer

Autumn Simon

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Sharon senior Autumn Simon has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Sept. 30 through Oct. 6. Simon is the fifth athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year.

Simon scored all five of Sharon’s goals last week, leading the Eagles to a pair of important league wins and keeping them in the mix for a playoff spot. The Babson College-commit started the season playing center back but, because of injuries and illnesses, was moved up top last week and delivered a hat trick and a brace to improve Sharon’s record to 4-5-0.

“All season long, and really her whole high school career, Autumn has stepped up to give what the team needs of her,” said Sharon coach Becca Kemp. “At the start of the season that was playing center back, when she was a freshmen she played keeper for several games, and this week it was putting points on the scoreboard. Without those goals and her overall leadership this week, our team would be in a very different position regarding playoffs.”

On Monday, Sharon secured a 3-1 win over Attleboro on its home grass. Simon scored all three for the Eagles, including a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes to take control of the match. After Attleboro cut the deficit in half, Simon scored again to seal the win. Two days later, at Foxboro, the Eagles trailed the Warriors 1-0 at halftime but turned things around after the break. Simon scored twice in a little more than a minute to put the Eagles in front. Her first came after a long ball from the back that she took down impressively, before spinning back onto her right foot and firing an unstoppable shot into the top corner. The second came after an Olivia Landstein interception, with Simon holding off her marker in the box, chopping the ball back onto her left foot, and coolly sliding a shot past the keeper. The Eagles currently sit at No. 27 in Div. 2.
