Oliver Ames senior Liston Funai has been selected as the Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for December 26th through January 1st. Funai is the 14th player selected for the 2016-2017 school year and the third selection during the winter season. Funai, who wrestles at 132 pounds, has been one of the leaders for the Tigers and helped OA to a 9-5 start to the season.

Last week, Funai put in an impressive performance at the prestigious Marshfield Holiday Tournament. Despite being unranked at the start, Funai beat the top seed from Weymouth, who was ranked #8 in the state in the weight class, 6-3 in the second round. He followed that with a pin of the ninth seed and then defeated the fifth seed to advance to the final where he would take second in the bracket.

“Liston’s recent success has all to do about his toughness and will to win,” Oliver Ames head coach Kahn Lima said. “He just wins all of the tough positions in his matches, and that has started to rubbed off on his teammates.”

Funai followed that up with a four-win performance at the BC High Team Duals with all four victories by pin. Oliver Ames went 4-0 on the day with wins over Silver Lake, New Bedford, Josiah Quincy and Chicopee Comp.

The senior is now 16-1 on the season with an impressive 13 pins. He is ranked #8 in the start at 132 by MassWrestling. He is the first wrestler to be selected as Player of the Week.

The Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, is selected by the staff. Nominations can be submitted throughout the week up until Saturday night at midnight. There may be a poll posted on every Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selection but do not strictly dictate the decision.
