Canton senior Mekhala Costello has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Sept. 11 through Sept. 17. Costello is the second player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year.
Costello has been instrumental in Canton getting off to a perfect 3-0 start to the season. The Bulldogs lead the league with nine goals in three games and have yet to concede one. Costello, a senior midfielder, scored in all three games and is tied for the league lead in goals (four) and points (six) and tied for second in assists (two).
“Mekhala has had a strong week,” said Canton coach Idris Senyonjo. “Her role every game was different and she has been able to adjust game-by-game and it’s her ability to quickly adjust that makes her unpredictable. She is her biggest critic and she still feels she hasn’t reached her full strides yet.”
Canton’s season opener was delayed, making it a busy week for the Bulldogs. In the rain on Monday night, Costello opened the scoring from the penalty spot and then assisted on Emma Cahill’s second half goal that sealed a 2-0 win over North. The next night at Sharon, Costello again had the game-winner (from a Cahill assist) then played a perfect through ball into Cahill for Canton’s third goal in the 4-0 win. On Thursday at Taunton, Costello made it three straight game-winning goals, scoring on an early penalty kick. She added a third with 15 minutes to go, sealing a 3-0 victory.
