Oliver Ames senior Peyton Phillips has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Oct. 25 through Oct. 31. Phillips is the fourth player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2020-21 school year.
Phillips helped OA move into pole position in the Davenport division this week with a win and a tie against defending league champion Canton. The senior goalie tossed a pair of shutouts against the Bulldogs, narrowly outdueling fellow goalie Riley O’Connor to put the Tigers one point clear of Canton atop the division standings heading into the final week.
“Peyton’s height, athleticism and intensity are the perfect storm in goal,” said OA head coach Sharon Lawrence. “Her previous defensive play gives her great instincts on timing and when to be aggressive and go for it. She has played every minute of varsity this year and has gained confidence. Great players are highlighted during tough competition, and she earned it last week against Canton! So proud of her willingness to step in last year, and her determination to crush it!”
On Tuesday, Phillips, who only started playing goalie last season and is in her first year as a starter, made several key stops down the stretch. She stopped a one-timer from point-blank range and then made a sliding save to stop a breakaway in the final minute. Sunday’s rematch was similar to the first meeting with the goalies stealing the show in a game that had chances galore. Phillips made several breakaway stops, including one in the final minute of the first half on Canton’s leading scorer Maria Femia that kept the game scoreless.
Phillips has allowed only four goals in eight games this season, not allowing more than one goal in game so far. She has four shutouts for the Tigers who are looking to mark their return to the Davenport by reclaiming the league title. OA plays Stoughton twice this week.
The Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, is selected by the HockomockSports.com staff. Nominations can be submitted throughout the week up until Saturday night at midnight. There may be a poll posted on every Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selection but do not strictly dictate the decision.
