Attleboro
2023-2024 Boys Record: 6-0 (Kelley-Rex division champions)
2023-2024 Girls Record: 4-1
Coach: Darbie Sawyer & Sarah Butler
It’s hard to start the conversation about this season without acknowledging the success the Bombardiers had last year. The boys put together one of the best seasons in program history, culminating in a south sectional championship and a fourth place at states. With 12 top place finishers gone to graduating, it’s a bit of a new start for the boys in blue.
As Attleboro integrates some new faces into new faces, it will lean on senior Andrew Collins and sophomore Ayden Gietz, who will both be top swimmers for the team this year and expand on the races they competed in a year ago. Freshman Kris Kotnisz could make a splash right off the bat, with sectionals and states in sight. That trio joined with Ryan Norman to secure a pair of relay wins in the Bombardiers’ season-opening win over Seekonk.
“I am excited to see younger swimmers step up,” said Attleboro coach Sarah Butler. “We know that we are a different team than the last 4 years – swimmers have set goals for this season, mostly personal goals, and we are excited to work all season to meet those personal goals and expectations.”
The girls team will be a smaller group and it will welcome some new faces so the Bombardiers will lean heavily on four talented and experienced swimmers. Three-time Hockomock League MVP Zuri Ferguson, who swam in the Olympics this summer for Trinidad & Tobago, is a multi-time state champion and will look to make one last splash this winter before heading south to the University of Florida next year. Ferguson is joined by Ava Dougherty, Samantha Provost, and Caroline Lynch-Bartek; that group placed at states last year in the 200 medley relay.
Doughtery has improved across the board but will be one of the top swimmers in the breaststroke this winter after taking second at Hocks last year. Provost also had a strong offseason and will be used across a multitude of events for the Bombardiers this year while Lynch-Bartek is the go-to option in the freestyle races.
Foxboro
2023-2024 Boys Record: 4-3
2023-2024 Girls Record: 1-6

2024-2025 Hockomock Swimming Preview
With a strong core of returners, the Foxboro boys team could make a big splash in the Davenport division this season.
Two-time Hock all star Evan Stein returns for his senior season, fresh off a fourth-place finish at Division 2 states last year in the 100 back, along with a sixth-place finish in the 100 free. Stein finished fourth or better in four events at Hocks last year and owns or shares in 10 of 11 school records, so he will certainly be one of the top swimmers in the Hock this year. Senior Matthew Rochford is a go-to option in the breaststroke, junior Josh Netson excels in the free, and sophomore Brandon Franciosi will look to build on a strong debut year; that group of four gives Foxboro a formidable relay team. Sophomores Tyler Brazell and Nikunj Nagpa are coming off strong offseasons while freshmen Andrew Gallagher, Ronan Callahan, and Declan Do could make an immediate impact.
The Warriors return a couple of state qualifiers on the girls side. Captain Ava Gallagher went to states in both the 500 free and 100 fly and was a Hock all star while junior Molly Lockwood qualified in the same events. Add in the experience of junior Darrah Bertumen and the Warriors have a strong core to lean on as they look to challenge for the Davenport division. Sophomore Hannah Ouellette and freshmen Izzy Gove and Niamh Kelly are new to the team and will be instant contributors; Yassmine Bougoussa, Mynerge Janvier, and Noah Cohen are familiar faces back in the pool this winter. That depth will be key as Foxboro looks to improve on its eighth-place finish at Hocks last year.
Franklin
2023-2024 Boys Record: 2-3
2023-2024 Girls Record: 5-0 (Kelley-Rex division champions)
Coach: Carl Cederquist
The Franklin girls are in the midst of a dynasty-like run in the Hockomock League and it’s going to be hard to slow them down this winter.
The Panthers have a new head coach in Carl Cederquist, who has come out of retirement and has over 40 years of coaching experience. With over 30 swimmers on the girls team, there’s a lot of optimism for the dominance of the Hock to continue. Kseniya Baghdasaryan and Taylor O’Neil are back to give the Panthers a boost on the girls side while Brendan Collins and Owen Chandaria are looking to do the same on the boys team.
There are plenty of familiar faces too. Harika Birali is back after a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke at states plus a fifth-place finish in the 100 free. Ava Pecora and Sasha Baghdasaryan are both veterans on the team that competed at states last year. On the boys side, Zack Pecora, Miller Wasik, and Ollie McCarthy are all top swimmers looking to help the Panthers bounce back from finishing eighth at Hocks last year.
“We have a couple of young exciting freshman joining the team and we’re are looking forward to having a great season and a Hockomock Championship,” Cederquist said.
Mansfield
2023-2024 Boys Record: 4-4
2023-2024 Girls Record: 3-5
Coach: Brian Schwartz
After only graduating one senior from last year’s team, the Mansfield girls team comes into the season looking to challenge for the Davenport division title.
One of the main reasons that the Hornets will be in the conversation this season is senior Addison MacDonald, who had a pair of top 10 finishes at states last year with a fifth-place finish in the 500 free and eighth in the 200 free. With some depth around her, the Hornets will step into the title hunt conversation. Junior Clara Schreiber has shown a lot of improvement in each of the last two seasons and could be in line for a breakout year for Mansfield, who will be looking to send a relay team or two to the postseason. Another big asset to the team is senior diver Danielle Fligor, who was the Hockomock League champion last season.
Mansfield will have a bit of a youth movement on the boys side after graduating a talented senior group from last year. Juniors Andrew Fleischmann, Nathan Qu, and Jeffery Lim are prime for strong seasons as returners while sophomores Jackson Keyes and Patrick Murray are looking to build upon stellar rookie years and qualify for the postseason this winter.
Milford
2023-2024 Boys Record: 6-1
2023-2024 Girls Record: 4-3
Coach: David Chaplin, Katherine Lemire, Oliver Michalewski
Both the Milford boys and girls teams are coming off winning seasons a year ago in the dual meets and will be looking to take it to the next level this winter.
“The goal is a division championship and on to the postseason,” said head coach David Chaplin. “To that end, we have added the Milford Invitational during Christmas break, a six-team seeded championship format featuring Hock friends Franklin and King Philip along with New Bedford, Ashland, and Dedham.”
The team leadership and culture have transitioned smoothly to this year’s captains: Aaron McIsaac, Ben Pezza, Cory Rattray, Brighid Howland, and Vedi Raval. Beefing up the regular season schedule should help prepare both squads for their goal of the postseason. On the boys side, Rattray is coming off a season in which he competed in four events at states, highlighted by individual races in the 50 free and the 100 free. Both McIsaac and Pezza joined Rattray and Ethan Fiedler in competing at states in relays; the group took seventh overall in the 200 free. Fielder is also a strong swimmer in both the fly and breaststroke, sophomores Connor Hayes, Lucca Ramos, and Eli DeBarros provide crucial depth, and freshman Ishmeal DaSilva could make a splash in his rookie season.
Head coach Katherine Lemire noted how the addition of Sharon to the Kelley-Rex certainly makes things interesting, and along with Attleboro, Franklin, and the Scarlet Hawks, it could be the deepest division the league has seen. Milford will turn to Howland and Raval to lead the way, and both will be key components in the relays. Sophomore Mackenzie Roy had a terrific rookie year and is a candidate to help the Hawks solve their recent drought of sectional qualifiers.
“I love the energy this team is bringing to the table so early on in the season,” Michalewski said. “It feels as if last season ended and this season began without any time lapsing in between. Most athletes are in the same racing form at the beginning of this season as they were at the conclusion of last year’s season. The coaching staff is really excited to see what these two teams can do this year.”
Oliver Ames
2023-2024 Boys Record: 1-5
2023-2024 Girls Record: 4-2
Coach: Morgan O’Hara
New head coach Morgan O’Hara knows the Tigers can have success in the pool: she’s lived in. Just five seasons ago, she was a major part in leading Oliver Ames to its second straight win at the Hock championship meet.
Now O’Hara is looking to lead the Tigers back to the top as the head coach. She’s joined by assistants Makayla Paquin and Sophie Hirtle, and all three have earned top finishes at Hocks in the past. In fact, O’Hara still owns two meet records as a member of the 200 and 400 free relays in 2019. This season, she will be leaning on four senior captains Addison McDonagh, Puqi Luo, Mackenzie Merrill, and Angela Chiereghio to lead the way.
So far this season, the Tigers participated in the Milford relay carnival to start the year as well as a crossover meet against Franklin. O’Hara noted there has been some growth already in this group and a high level of compete.
“Our four leaders are ones to watch out for in the Hock, and we are looking forward to a great season!” O’Hara said.
Sharon
2023-2024 Boys Record: 6-0 (Davenport division champions)
2023-2024 Girls Record: 4-2
Coach: Sara Barbera
This could be a big winter for the Eagles, who return a lot of talented swimmers on both the boys and girls teams.
Starting with the boys, who finished second overall at Hocks last year, there is a lot of optimism with this group. Junior captain Brac Buffa had a breakout season last winter, taking first in the 500 free and third in the 100 fly at Hocks, and will be looking to push to get back to the postseason for the second straight season. He is joined by seniors Sammy O’Reilly and Ray Luo, who competed at sectionals in the 200 free relay last year, as captains for this year’s Eagles team. Sophomore Leo Tran was another breakout swimmer as a freshman, taking second in the 100 free (by less than one second) and third place in the 200 free at states (by less than three seconds). Alex Ng and Justin Hsu also have experience at sectionals from last year and freshman Shaurya Bedre is a swimmer to keep an eye out for this winter.
There were a lot of girls swimmers from the Hock who had a lot of success in the postseason but one of the best was Sharon’s Feining Huang, who was a double state champion after winning both the 200 free and 100 fly; on top of that she was the Hock champ in the 200 IM and set the championship meet record. She will obviously be one of the top swimmers both in the Hock and statewide this season and will keep Sharon in the mix for the Kelley-Rex title. Senior captains Avital Gerts (500 free state qualifier) and Hannah Spears will lead the way for the squad this year. Newcomers Cora Shea, Wilma Zeng, and Daisy Ryu are all candidates to make an immediate impact for the Eagles.

Player of the Week: Zuri Ferguson, Attleboro Swimming

Attleboro junior Zuri Ferguson has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Jan. 29 through Feb. 4. Fergsuson is the 20th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2023-24 school year and seventh in the winter season.
Ferguson continued her stellar career with another strong performance at the annual Hockomock League Girls Swimming Championships, held on Saturday at Milford High. She won four events, two individual and two relays, and set a pair of meet records, helping the Bombardiers (309.5 points) finish second as a team behind four-time defending champion Franklin (420.5).
“It’s always amazing to watch Zuri swim,” said Attleboro coach Darbie Sawyer. “She dominates in the pool and brings the best out of her teammates. She is so humble; you would never have known that she was a champion of four events and three records for the day. She wins a race and moves on to cheer her teammates on. That is what we love about her, she is a team player.”
Things started off strongly for Attleboro and Ferguson, who was part of the 200-yard Medley Relay. The Bombardiers took first in a time of 1:55.16, more than two seconds faster than Franklin in second. In the 100-yard free, Ferguson set a new meet record in a time of 52.18, which was more than three seconds faster than the next closest swimmer and more than a second faster than the previous top mark set in 2019. In the 200-yard Free Relay, Ferguson swam the anchor leg to help the Bombardiers finish in 145:51, two seconds quicker than the team from Canton. She followed that by winning the 100-yard Backstroke in a record-setting time of 54.37. This was more than five seconds faster than the competition and more than a second quicker than the previous record, which Ferguson set as a freshman.

There may be a poll posted on every Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selection but do not strictly dictate the decision.

Attleboro, 50 @ Taunton, 49 – – Final – It came down to just one point as Attleboro clinched a win over Taunton, securing a 5-0 season and its first ever Kelley-Rex division title and first Hock title in indoor track. If Taunton had won, the Tigers would have clinched a three-way share with the Bombardiers and Mansfield. Attleboro earned a sweep in the long jump, led by Adrian Rivera’s leap of 19-01.50 followed by Kaidan Murray and Cashel Stuger. Stuger anchored the sweep of the 55M hurdles, taking first in 8.41 followed by Murray and Peter DelPozzo. Attleboro also got wins from Jacob Blazek (600M, 1:31.4), Damon Dugan (high jump, 5-08.00), and Chris Leonardo (shot put, 42-11.75). Dmitrius Shearrion (55M, 6.92), Conal Scully (300M, 37.49), Ryan Strawbridge (1000M, 2:43.49), Andrew Cali (1 Mile, 4:50.84), and Brayden Cali (10:24.23) all won for Taunton.
North Attleboro, 68 @ Sharon, 32 – Final – Nathan Shultz took first in two events and North Attleboro swept three events to score a win over Sharon. Shultz was the winner in the 55M dash (6.80) and then anchored a sweep of the high jump (5-10.00) followed by Nathan MacDonald and Aaron Levesque. Levesque took first in the long jump, followed by MacDonald and Kyle Conroy for another sweep, and Brodie Clemente, Joseph Beckett, and Mark Etienvre swept the shot put in North’s win. North also got wins from Michael Simonian (300M, 39.29), Evan Tino (600M, 1:34.99), and Connor Peterson (1 Mile, 4:52.31). Sharon’s Karthik Pisupati won the 1000M, Adam Lessard was first in the 2 Mile race, and Alexander Gong took first in the 55M hurdles (8.51).
Canton, 32 @ Stoughton, 63 – Final – Stoughton swept the 600M and the shot put, adding first place finishes in six more events and one relay in its win over Canton. Jett Tran-Burger was first in the 600M followed by Alex Huynh Joao Marotti whie Zachary Roos took first in the shot put followed by teammates Thomas Laz and Shawn Fargher. Jalen Castillo was a triple winner for the Knights, taking first in the 55M, the 300M, and the long jump while other winners for Stoughton included Thomas Brennan (1000M), Rinoldi Lauradin (high jump), and Hunter Tran (55m hurdles). Kyle Downing won the 2 Mile in 10:44.58 for Canton while Sam Vail set a new PR in the 1 Mile, taking first in 5:09.26.
Foxboro, 20 @ Oliver Ames, 72 – Final – Oliver Ames won 11 of the 12 events, including both relays, on its way to completing a perfect 5-0 dual meet season to clinch the Davenport division title. Fabrice Fouron was the big winner for the Tigers, taking three first-place finishes to lead the way. Fouron won the high jump (5-02.00), the long jump (19-01.50), and the 55M hurdles (8.90) to register 15 points on his own. OA also picked up wins from Ashton Hart (55M, 6.95), Joshua Tocci (300M, 39.31), Wyatt Fritchman (1000M, 2:55.46), Ryan Sarney (1 Mile, 4:33.01), Alexander Pierce (2 Mile, 10:24.90), and Brayden Burton (shot put, 35-07.00). Foxboro’s Jared Ciora took first place in the 600M with a time of 1:35.12.
Mansfield, 65 @ Franklin, 31 – Final – Mansfield took first place in seven events plus swept both relays to grab a win over Franklin. Jake Wall was a double-winner, taking first in both the 55M (6.79) and the long jump (21-06.25) while the Hornets also got wins from Riley Tremblay (1000M, 2:50.19), Chris Leonard (1 Mile, 4:39.97), Collin Stevens (2 Mile, 10:30.17), Evan Rawlings (high jump, 5-02.00), and Dylan Buchanan (55M hurdles, 8.54). Luke Sidwell (300M, 37.70), Tyler Powderly (300M, 1:28.58), and Emmett Lackey (shot put, 40-08.75) had wins for Franklin.
Milford, 39 @ King Philip, 60 – Final – Anchored by a sweep in the long jump and five more first place finishes, King Philip secured a win over Milford. Degen Granese anchored the sweep, taking first in the long jump followed by Luca Giardini and Turag Ikbal. Granese added a win in the high jump, Giardini took first in the 600M, Nathan Gebhard won the 300M, Noah Hurd was first in the 1000M, and Nathan Sylven won the 2 Mile race. Milford got wins from Patrick Delaney (55M), James Comisky (1 Mile), Marco Monteiro (shot put) and Samuel Borst (55M hurdles).
Girls Indoor Track (@ Reggie Lewis Center)
North Attleboro, 53 @ Sharon, 46 – Final – North Attleboro swept both the high jump and the shot put and recorded points in every individual event to land a close win over Sharon. Caroline Folan won the high jump followed by Sydney O’Connor and Meagan Dowd while Marissa Robinson took first in the shot put and was followed by Sienna Newth and Noemie Eugene. Dowd also took first in the 300M while Katie Galgoczy won the 2 Mile race. Sharon’s Simeone Dunbar won three events (55M, long jump, 55M hurdles) while Samantha Connors (600M), Sierra Robison (1000M), and Daphne Theiler (1 Mile) each finished first for the Eagles.
Canton, 30 @ Stoughton, 69 – Final – Stoughton’s Shayla Ford was a triple winner and Elaine McCarty won two individual events to help the Black Knights take down Canton. Ford was first in the 55M (7.85), the 300M (46.84), and the long jump (15-03.00) while McCarty won the 1000M (3:30.67) and the 1 Mile (6:23.15). Also winning for Stoughton were Julie Richardson (600M, 1:49.32), Alexis Mederios (2 Mile, 14:19.71), and Annalisa Marckmann (shot put, 29-05.00). Canton earned wins from Katie Oliver (55M hurdles, 10.70) and Ella Lewis (high jump, 4-06.00). Lewis was also third in the long jump and second in the 55M hurdles while Oliver had a second place finish in the 55M dash.
Foxboro, 29 @ Oliver Ames, 69 – Final – Oliver Ames had two of the top three finishes in eight of the 10 individual events and split the relays to secure a big win over Foxboro, completing a perfect 5-0 dual meet season to grab the Davenport division title. Johanna Holmes, Julia Maclaine, and Amelia Andre each took home a pair of wins for the Tigers, Holmes taking first in both the 600M (1:45.64) and the 1000M (3:17.05), Maclaine winning the 300M (45.66) and the high jump (4-08.00), and Andre taking the 55M (7.99) and the long jump (14-08.00). Taegen Hodges (1 Mile, 5:40.92), Katie Sobieraj (2 Mile, 11:34.83), Emily Meyers (shot put, 23-00.50), and Tatum Fritchman (55M hurdles, 10.95) also won for OA.
Mansfield, 53 @ Franklin, 47 – Final – Mansfield took points from each individual event, getting two of the top three spots in five events to just edge out Franklin and finish the season at 5-0 for the Kelley-Rex division title. The Hornets got key points with a 1-2 finish in the 55M dash (Chloe Guthrie, Abigail Scott), the 1000M (Katherine Miller, Meghan Johnston), the 1 Mile (Norah Puleo, Alanna Conley) and the long jump (Anna Buckley, Elsie Roberts) plus first and third in the 55M hurdles (Buckley, Julia Pike). Mansfield also got key wins in the 600M (Caitlin Dumouchel) and the 2 Mile (Anna Moore). Franklin picked up wins from Sophia Cuneo (300M, 1:48.13), Abigail Griffith (high jump, 5-00.00), and Darby Nicholson (shot put, 30-08.50).
Milford, 68 @ King Philip, 29 – Final – Kiyanni Simas won three individual events and Sydney Kalil won two more to help the Scarlet Hawks land a win over King Philip. Simas took first in the 55M dash, the long jump (a Scarlet Hawk sweep), and the 55M hurdles while Kalil was the winner in both the 1 Mile and 2 Mile races. Milford also got a win from Tatiana Chaplin in the 1000M. KP’s Grace Lawler (300M), Leah Vigevani (600M), and Ahunna James (shot put) had first place finishes.
Attleboro, 53 @ Taunton, 47 – Final – Attleboro took first place in six individual events and finished second in three of them for key points in a close win over Taunton. The Bombarders went first and second in the high jump (Rebecca Rainey, Madison Ellis), the long jump (Jahela Douglas, Aariana Ridge), and the shot put (Madison Morgan, Elayna Marinelli). Attleboro also had first place finishes in the 55M dash (Douglas), the 1 Mile (Emelia Smith), and the 55M hurdles (Angela Cooney(. Taunton got wins from Nia Mainer-Smith (300M), Phylicia Dias (600M), Kiley Quinlan (1000M), and Emersyn DePonte (2 Mile).
Boys Swimming
Attleboro, 85 @ Mansfield, 66 – Final – Mansfield’s Rico Palanza and Xavier Gwynne each won an event, took second in another, and were apart of two winning relay teams. Palanza won the 50 free and took second in the 100 free while Gwynne was first in the 200 medley and second in the 100 backstroke. Senior Kevin McCarthy added a second place finish in the 200 free and a PR time for second in the 100 free while classmate Ryan Morley swam a pair of personal bests in the 100 breaststroke (third place) and the 500 free. Palanza, Gwynne, McCarthy and Morley teamed up to win the 200 medley relay, and the team of McCarthy, Neil Dalpe, Gwynne, and Palanza won the 200 free relay.

Girls Swimming
Attleboro, 90 @ Mansfield, 61 – Final – Attleboro freshman Zuri Ferguson broke her third school record so far this season and qualified for states in a pair of events to help the Bombardiers take down Mansfield. After setting new marks in the 100 backstroke and 500 free earlier this year, Ferguson set a new record of 59.56 in the 100 butterfly, beating the record time of 1:01.2. Ferguson also won the 200 IM and was apart of the winning 200 medley and 400 free relays. Ferguson was joined by Natalia Kotnisz, Caroline Lynch-Bartek, and Ella Lynch-Bartek on the 400 free, which qualified for states. Caroline Lynch-Bartek added wins in the 200 and 500 free on top of the two relay wins. For Mansfield, Sofia Seifert set a new personal best and qualified for sectionals in a first place finish in the 50 free and also took first in the 100 breaststroke with another PR.

Boys Basketball
Milford, 38 @ Attleboro, 61 – Final – Attleboro orchestrated a 14-0 run between the first and second quarters and never looked back to grab a big win over visiting Milford. Tied 9-9 early on, the Bombardiers staked a 16-9 claim by the end of the first and then outscored the Scarlet Hawks by nine in the second to build a 35-19 halftime lead. Senior Alvin Harrison scored a career-high 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the way for the Bombardiers. Senior Joe Francois-Annevil added 11 points, 10 rebounds and four assists and senior Evan Houle chipped in with 11 points and five assists. Sophomore Jake Soares scored a team-high 11 points while freshman Andrew Rivera added eight points and four rebounds.
Mansfield, 51 @ Bishop Feehan, 41 – Final – Mansfield senior Andrew Slaney hit three three-pointers in the fourth quarter and scored all 13 of his points in the final frame as the Hornets pulled away from the upset-minded Shamrocks. After a close first quarter (14-11), the Hornets limited the hosts to just two points in the second to stake a 27-13 lead by halftime. Feehan responded with a big quarter of its own, holding Mansfield to five points in the frame to make it a one-point game, 32-31, going into the fourth. Slaney hit back-to-back threes, Chris Hill (10 points) converted a putback, and Matt Hyland (16 points) hit two from the line to complete a 10-0 run over the first three minutes of the fourth. Feehan cut it to seven with three minutes left but Slaney sank another three to keep the Hornets ahead for good.
Boys Swimming
Franklin, 79 @ Attleboro, 86 – Final – Franklin had more first place finishes but Attleboro’s depth helped earn key points for a win over the Panthers. Matt Marcil was a double-winner in individual races while also adding a relay win to help Attleboro get the win. Marcil took first in both the 100 back (qualifying for sectionals) and anchored a sweep in the 100 fee (followed by Matt Brewster and Andrew Collins). Marcil was joined by Collins, Brewster, and Zach Dorrance to win the 200 free relay. Alex Harrop added a first place finish in the 100 fly.
Girls Swimming
Franklin, 95 @ Attleboro, 64 – Final – Attleboro freshman Zuri Ferguson broke a 30-year old program record, setting a new time of 5:16.44 in the 500 free, breaking the record by 2.28 seconds but the Bombardiers fell to a deep Franklin team. Ferguson also won the 50 free, qualifying for sectional in both events. Ella Lynch-Bartek took second in the 50 free and third in the 100 free, Caroline Lynch-Bartek placed third in the 50 free, and Sydney Dorval was third in the 100 fly. Ferguson, Lynch-Bartek, Lynch-Bartek, and Dorval teamed up to take second in both the 200 medley and 200 free relays. Abbi Rodriques and Natalia Kotnisz also won key points for the Bombardiers.
