MILFORD, Mass. – On Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, two programs that are relatively new to the Hockomock League and that had claimed dual meet titles with undefeated records continued historic seasons by winning each program’s first Hocomock Championship Meet title.
In front of a packed viewing area at the Milford High pool, the Taunton boys’ won the title with 318.50 points, which was 60 more than the hosts in second, and the King Philip girls swam away with the title by 117 points. The Warriors finished with 407 points with Franklin taking second at 290.
“It’s really big for us, especially for a town like Taunton,” said second-year Taunton coach Chris Suneson, who is a former member of the swim program at the high school. “When we’ve made news in recent years it hasn’t been great, so for us to come here and do this makes the whole town a happy place.”
The Tigers went unbeaten in the league to claim the dual meet title, but coming into the championships Suneson was still aware that perennial powers like Milford and King Philip would have the chance at some measure of revenge.
“I was really nervous for us because I know how things can change in this meet, but we came in strong and I was very excited,” he said. “
Suneson added, “We have a lot of fast kids, but the reason that we won this is because we have so many kids that can swim and so many kids that can place.  Our depth really was a strength.”
Depth was also a contributing factor in the KP girls’ dominance in the pool on Saturday. Warriors coach Kathy White credited not only the swimmers that were placing in the top five or six, but also the number of KP swimmers that brought in points in the top 16 scorers.
“It’s good to get out from the shadow of the boys who have won so much over the years,” said White. “It’s good for bragging rights in the program.”
The program has only existed for the past six years, but the Warriors came close to winning the championship meet when the current seniors were freshmen and White said that she was proud of those swimmers for leading the way for the younger members of the team.
She added, “We had a lot of freshmen and sophomores that scored for us today and that bodes well for the future of the program.”
Both coaches admitted being nervous right up until the final standings were announced. Suneson said, “I knew we had the opportunity but until that check’s cashed…Even before that last 1,200, I knew we had the points but until they said we won and they handed us that plaque I wasn’t relaxed.”
Taunton was led on Friday by its relay teams, which claimed first place finishes (and the double points that went with them) in the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 Free Relay. In addition, Dylan Scharma brought home first place in the 100 free and fourth in the 200 free and Noah Moniz took third in the 200 individual medley and second in the 100 backstroke.
Milford finished in second place behind a strong meet from sophomore Nick Antonellis. He was part of the second place 200 Medley Relay and third place 400 Free Relay teams. Antonellis also took first place in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly.
The King Philip boys were led by Michael Choate, who finished second in the 200 IM and first in the 100 backstroke. Alex DiGiacomo also had a strong meet for the Warriors with a pair of individual second place finishes in the 50 free and the 100 butterfly. Canton’s Sebastian Melendez also added a pair of wins in the 200 and 500 free.
On the girls side, a number of KP swimmers had remarkable meets. Sydney Nasson was part of the first place 200 and 400 Free Relay teams, and won both the 50 free and the 100 free. Sydney’s younger sister, Samantha Nasson added a fifth place in the 100 butterfly and finished third in the 500 free as well.  Emily McQuaid tacked on wins in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly to a second in the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 Free Relay.
Franklin finished second with Ashley Loomis having an impressive meet. Loomis won both the 200 free and the 500 free. In the 500, she was followed by teammate Leah Zogby in second and Molly Brown in fourth.
Sharon was the top Davenport team in fourth place and the Eagles were led by Tara Zhou. She took second as part of the 200 Free Relay and fourth in the 200 Medley Relay before adding second place finishes in the 100 free and the 100 backstroke.
