2017 HockomockSports Baseball Awards
Stoughton senior pitcher and outfielder Justin Hutchinson has been named the 2017 HockomockSports.com Baseball Player of the Year. Hutchinson played a vital role in leading the Black Knights to their second straight Hockomock League Davenport division title. Hutchinson was also voted a Hockomock League All Star for the second consecutive season.

“Justin was a true difference maker on the mound the last couple of seasons for the Black Knights,” said HockomockSports.com Editor-in-Chief Ryan Lanigan. “Any time he had the ball in his hand, you knew you were going to see a top pitching performance. When he wasn’t on the mound, he was a very good left fielder and had some solid at-bats throughout the year.”

In 12 appearances this season, Hutchinson was 8-2 overall (a league high in wins) in 56 innings of work. The senior right hander posted a 1.50 ERA (just 12 earned runs allowed all season) while striking out 67 batters. He struck out 59 of those batters in the regular season, which was second most in the league.

Even more impressive, Hutchinson limited opponents to a 0.176 batting average and allowed just four extra base hits – three doubles, one triple – all season long against 227 batters.

“Justin was instrumental in the Black Knights winning the Davenport title the past two seasons,” said Stoughton head coach Mike Armour. “Hutch loves the game of baseball, is a great teammate, and led by example every time he set foot on the field.”

Offensively, Hutchinson was a key piece in Stoughton’s lineup. He batted 0.279 (19 hits) with a pair of doubles and a triple. He scored 10 runs and knocked in 11 runs. He had multi-RBI games against Attleboro, Mansfield, Foxboro and Canton.

“He’s just an athlete and a competitor who consistently got the job done for his team when they needed him, whether it was on the mound or at the plate,” said Mansfield head coach Joe Breen. “He was dominant from start to finish. That’s what MVP type players do.”

Hutchinson, who will be playing at Westfield State next season, is the first ever Stoughton athlete – male or female – to win Player of the Year honors. Taunton’s Luke Figueira (2015), Oliver Ames’ Brendan Welch (2015), Attleboro’s Max Lancaster (2014) and David MacKinnon (2013) are previous winners of the Baseball Player of the Year award.

Honorable Mention: Jake Noviello (Franklin), Will Weir (King Philip), Aidan Wilde (Milford).
