King Philip senior Sydney Phillips has been selected as the Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Oct. 8 through Oct. 14. Phillips is the sixth player selected for the 2017-18 school year, first volleyball player chosen this season, and first KP athlete to be named Player of the Week since football player Shane Frommer in November 2016.

Phillips, the reigning Player of the Year and league MVP, lifted the Warriors to a perfect 3-0 week, including a win over Walpole that avenged a loss in the opening match of the season. She totaled 42 kills during the three games last week and helped KP move within one win of its fourth divisional title in the past five seasons.

“Sydney is a powerful outside hitter who continues to be a real difference maker,” said KP head coach Kristen Geuss. “She has a high volleyball IQ and is our go-to player.”

On Wednesday, Phillips had nine kills, six digs, and six service points, showing off her all-around game as KP beat fellow division leader North Attleboro 3-1. The following day, Phillips had 22 kills and eight digs to sweep the Rebels and added 11 kills in a 3-1 over Attleboro on Friday.

With another perfect week, KP extended its winning streak to 14 games and is on the verge of another league title. Before Monday’s contests, Phillips leads the Hockomock League with 235 kills and has added 102 service points and 65 digs.

The Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, is selected by the staff. Nominations can be submitted throughout the week up until Saturday night at midnight. There may be a poll posted on every Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selection but do not strictly dictate the decision.
