2024 HockomockSports Boys Hockey Awards
Franklin senior Ben Paterson has been named the 2024 HockomockSports.com Boys Hockey Player of the Year after a second consecutive stellar season for the Panthers. Paterson was also voted as the Hockomock League MVP for the second consecutive season.

Paterson had a strong sophomore year in 2022, earning HockomockSports.com All-Underclassmen Team honors, and then over the past two seasons has emerged as one of the most dangerous forwards the league has seen in recent history. During the 2023-2024 season, Paterson took his game to a new level.

Franklin has one of the toughest schedules in the state, loading up its non-league schedule with a who’s who of top teams in Massachusetts. Despite going against some of the best defenses and goalies in the state, Paterson found a way to produce game after game. During the season, he led the Hockomock League in scoring with 56 points, including a league-best 28 goals along with 28 assists, which was second most in the Hock.

“Opposing defenses had to constantly make sure they were keeping tabs on Ben every single shift, and even with that extra attention, he still found a way to be one of the top scorers in the state,” said HockomockSports Editor Ryan Lanigan. “Not only was he one of the most dangerous goal scorers, he made others around him better. The Panthers had a great year and Paterson spearheaded the offensive unit.”

Paterson is the third Franklin player to earn this honor and second straight following Dylan Marchand in 2022. Ryan Spillane was the first Panther to win the award in 2015. Other previous winners include Canton’s Johnny Hagan (2020), Ryan Nolte (2018, 2019) Jackson Maffeo (2017, 2016), and Brian Brooks (2013), as well as Oliver Ames’ Tyler Provost (2014).

Honorable Mention: Brendan Tourgee (Canton), Rowan Boulger (King Philip), Thomas Gormley (Mansfield)

Please note the HockomockSports.com Awards are selected strictly by our staff. They are not affiliated with the Hockomock League or its all star selections.

Coach of the Year – Toby Carlow, King Philip

Brian ShumanKing Philip head coach Toby Carlow has been named the 2024 HockomockSports.com Boys Hockey Coach of the Year after guiding the Warriors to a share of the Kelley-Rex title and a spot in the Division 2 state tournament.

The Kelley-Rex division has been almost completely controlled by Franklin since the league split into two divisions, winning it outright every year except the first year (Mansfield in 2011) and sharing it with King Philip in 2021 and again this year under Carlow’s leadership. King Philip ended the year 13-5-3 overall with a 6-2-0 mark in the Hock.

The Warriors also achieved a very rare feat of beating both Franklin and Canton in one season. It marked the first time in over a decade since a Hock team did it (Oliver Ames in 2013), and the first time in decades that it happened with both wins coming in the regular season. King Philip also had impressive non-league wins over Lynnfield, Westwood, Bishop Feehan, and Walpole, and earned the eighth seed and a home game in the Division 2 state tournament.

“It didn’t matter how much time was left in a game, you always felt like King Philip had a chance to win every game they were in,” said HockomockSports Editor Ryan Lanigan. “Carlow showed a lot of confidence in his players and they found ways to figure it out time and time again. It was an impressive season and one of the best in recent memory for King Philip.”
