Player of the Week: Caden Sullivan, Franklin Basketball

Franklin senior Caden Sullivan has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for March 10 through March 16. Sullivan is the 27th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and 13th in the winter season.

Sullivan capped off his career by leading the Panthers to the program’s first ever state championship. The Hockomock League’s leading scorer and Kelley-Rex division MVP, who earlier in the playoffs reached the 1,000-point mark for his career, scored 31 points in a 55-52 win in the Div. 1 final against Newton North at the Tsongas Center. That ranked in the top 30 all-time for a player in a state title game. He is the first boys basketball player to be selected as Player of the Week twice in the same season.

“What an unbelievable leader he’s been,” said Franklin head coach CJ Neely. “Obviously we wanted the ball in his hands down the stretch, simple as that. You saw all the plays he made. Sometimes as a coach, you just have to get out of the way and not over-coach. Just get the ball to your best player and let him do some work.”

Sullivan has been dominant throughout Franklin’s playoff run. The Endicott-commit scored 35 points (including 19 in the second quarter alone) in a blowout win against Shrewsbury in the opening round. In a tough Sweet Sixteen matchup against North Andover, Sullivan scored 28 points (including the 1,000th of his career), pulled down 10 rebounds, and had six steals. In the quarterfinal against Bridgewater-Raynham, he added 24 points and 10 rebounds and sank crucial free throws to hold off the Trojans down the stretch. In the Final Four against Central Catholic, Sullivan scored a game-high 20 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter as the Panthers broke open a tie game and clinched a spot in the program’s fourth state title game.

On Sunday night in Lowell, Sullivan was once again in control for the Panthers. He scored 15 of his game-high 31 points in the first half, helping Franklin rally from an early deficit to take a three-point lead at the break. His three-point play late in the third quarter answered a big run from Newton North and kept the Panthers in the lead (42-37) going to the fourth. Sullivan kept finding ways to score in the fourth, sinking an elbow jumper and finishing a put-back to keep the lead. He went to the line with six seconds left and sank a pair of clutch free throws, his final high school points, to put the Panthers up three.

Player of the Week: John Woodall, Franklin Wrestling

John Woodall
By HockomockSports.com Staff

Franklin freshman John Woodall has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for March 2 through March 10. Woodall is the 26th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and 12th in the winter season.

Woodall closed out his remarkable, undefeated rookie season by winning Franklin’s first New England title since 2010. The New England title was added to a trophy-laden freshman campaign, which included first-place finishes at the Lowell Holiday Tournament, the Hockomock Championship meet, Div. 1 states, and All-States. Woodall was the first male New England champ from the Hock since Milford’s Hampton Kaye-Kuter in 2022. Milford senior Michael Boulanger followed shortly after by winning the New England title at 157.

“Johnny is an extremely hard working kid that with infectious smile his competitiveness really rubbed off on the entire team,” said Franklin head coach Cam Kelly.

At the New England Championship in Providence, Woodall opened his run to the title with a major decision (11-2) in the opening round. He pinned his quarterfinal opponent right at the end of the first period, while leading 7-2. In the semifinal, Woodall dominated his opponent from Xavier (Conn.), winning 11-4 to advance to the final and a rematch with Greater Lowell’s Antoine Jackman. At All-States, Woodall won 5-3 and the match was even tighter this time around. Woodall came out on top 5-4 to claim the title. He finished the season 54-0 and became just the second freshman in Massachusetts history to record an undefeated season. He went the entire year with only one opposing wrestler able to score a takedown against him.

Player of the Week: Ryan Kelley, Foxboro Basketball

Ryan Kelley
By HockomockSports.com Staff

Foxboro senior Ryan Kelley has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Feb. 23 through March 1. Kelley is the 25th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and 11th in the winter season.

Kelley came through with a big double-double in Foxboro’s Div. 3 state tournament opening round win over Stoneham on Thursday night. He scored 14 points and pulled down 14 rebounds (six of them on the offensive glass), as the Warriors secured a spot in the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since the new statewide format was introduced.

“Ryan played an incredible game against Stoneham,” said Foxboro head coach Jon Gibbs, “He’s always a reliable shooter, but he took it to another level with his rebounding and defense. He made countless winning hustle plays that set the tone for our team to get a huge state tournament win.”

Against a Stoneham team that was much better than its No. 44 seed would indicate (its record was affected by forfeits from early in the season), Kelley put together a terrific all-around performance to help the Warriors pick up the win. Battling against Stoneham’s 6-foot-7 center Tony Dean, Kelley made several notable hustle plays, including a big offensive rebound that allowed Foxboro to grab the lead before halftime. He also grabbed an offensive board off a missed free throw that turned into a three-point play to extend the lead early in the second half. Kelley also knocked down the dagger, Foxboro’s only three of the second half, that put the Warriors up by 12 with just five minutes to play. Foxboro will travel to No. 5 Greater Lawrence Tech in the next round.

Michael Boulanger
By HockomockSports.com Staff

Milford senior Michael Boulanger has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Feb. 17 through Feb. 23. Boulanger is the 24th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and 10th in the winter season.

The Duke University commit continued his unbeaten season (47-0) by winning the Div. 2 state title at 157 pounds and helped the Hawks run away with a third D2 team championship in the past four seasons. This added to Milford’s fifth straight Kelley-Rex title and its second straight team title at the Hockomock Wrestling Championships.

“Mikey has had a dominant senior season heading into All States,” said Milford head coach PJ Boccia. “He is one of Milford’s all-time best wrestlers and is an exceptional scholar-athlete. He will be continuing his academic and wrestling career at Duke University next year. ”

Boulanger was the top seed entering the D2 state meet at Salem High. He made quick work of all four matches to win his second consecutive state title. Boulanger won by tech fall (19-3) over his first opponent from Bridgewater-Raynham (which finished second to Milford in the team standings). He earned a pin over his opponent from Minnechaug (which edged the Hawks to win last year’s D2 team title) and then dominated his semifinal match, beating the wrestler from Marblehead/Swampscott 15-0. Boulanger led second-seed Marco Albanese of Melrose 9-2 in the final before ending the match with a pin in just over a minute. For his career, he is 177-23 overall, a three-time sectional champion, and Milford’s first-ever three-time state champion.

Player of the Week: Leo Tran, Sharon Swim

Leo Tran
By HockomockSports.com Staff

Sharon sophomore Leo Tran has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Jan. 27 through Feb. 1. Tran is the 21st athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and seventh in the winter season.

Coming off a terrific freshman season, Tran has impressed in his second varsity campaign and he closed out the regular season with two individual titles and a new meet record at the annual Hockomock Boys Swim Championships held on Friday evening at Milford High. Tran also placed in two relays, as the Eagles took third overall behind winners Milford and second place Franklin.

“Leo had a tremendous meet,” said Sharon head coach Sara Barbera. “He broke an 8-year Hock meet record in the 200 free, and came very close to breaking a 12-year-old 100 free record. Fortunately, Leo is only a sophomore so has a lot of runway ahead of him. It will be fun seeing what he can do at sectionals and states!”

Tran got the meet started by swimming the second leg of the 200-yard medley relay along with Brac Buffa, Justin Hsu, and Tay Luo. The Eagles finished second with a time of 1:49.76. In the 200-yard free, Tran raced to the win with a new meet record time of 1:44.88, which was almost four seconds faster than his nearest competitor. He added another title in the 100 free, finishing in a time of 48.66, which was more than three seconds faster than the second place swimmer. Tran wrapped up a busy day by anchoring the 400 free relay (along with Buffa, Luo, and Alex Ng). The Eagles took third in a time of 3:33.70.

Canton junior Joey Ryan has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Jan. 20 through Jan. 26. Ryan is the 20th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and sixth in the winter season.

Ryan scored three times and had an assist for the Bulldogs last week, as Canton maintained its perfect start to the league campaign and extended its unbeaten run to 13 games (12-0-1) since its season-opening loss to Barnstable. Ryan is now second on the team, and in the Hockomock League, with 16 points (six goals and 10 assists).

“Joey has been critical to our success as a team this season,” said Canton head coach Brian Shuman. “Since he moved to our top line late in December, our offense has picked up considerably. Joey is a gifted offensive talent who can score when needed, but he also sets up his teammates with his playmaking ability. In the last three games, he has showcased both skills, tallying two goals and three assists, helping us earn three key victories in that stretch.”

In a showdown with fellow unbeaten King Philip, Ryan scored and assisted on Canton’s two goals to help the Bulldogs secure the win, avenging the team’s lone league loss from last year and keep a one-game lead on Mansfield in the standings. Ryan opened the scoring with a power play and then set up Ryan Elrick for a goal just a couple minutes later to put Canton 2-0 up in the first period. Ryan added the third goal in Canton’s win over Wellesley on Sunday in the first round of the Ed Burns Cup.

Player of the Week: Kiki Lynch, King Philip Hockey

Kiki Lynch
By HockomockSports.com Staff

King Philip junior Kiki Lynch has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Jan. 13 through Jan. 19. Lynch is the 19th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and fifth in the winter season.

Lynch has been outstanding for the Hockomock League-leading Warriors and allowed just two goals in two games this week, while making 60 saves combined. KP is 4-0-0 in league play and one game ahead of Canton in the standings, as Warriors go in search of a first Hock title.

“Kiki has been very focused and determined since the start of the season,” said King Philip head coach Ken Assad. “Her ability to communicate with the defense has created better decision making and quicker breakouts from our defense. She has been able limit the rebounds which helps with the second and third chances. Kiki was asked to help with the GAA this year to get it under two and she gas taken it to heart, she is approaching her 1000 career saves as well.”

After making 36 saves in an overtime, come-from-behind win at Franklin the week before, Lynch continued her stellar form this week. She made 23 saves in a tough, 1-0 loss to Ashland on Wednesday. KP had 37 shots on goal in the game but couldn’t make the breakthrough. She was even better over the weekend, making 44 saves in a 2-1 win over previously unbeaten Medfield. KP is no 8-2-0 on the season and closing in on the top 10 in the Div. 2 power rankings. Lynch has allowed only 10 goals in 10 games this winter with two shutouts.

Player of the Week: Foxboro’s 4×400 Relay Team

The Foxboro 4×400 Relay Team of Lauren Share, Lauren Bober, Maddy Luck, and Faith Bober has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Jan. 6 through Jan. 12. The relay team is the 18th Player of the Week chosen for the 2024-25 school year and fourth in the winter season.

In the second Hockomock League indoor track meet of the season, held at The TRACK at New Balance last Thursday night, the 4×400 relay team set a new league-best time to help the Warriors rally and beat North Attleboro to make it a perfect 2-0 start to the season and maintain a tie with Oliver Ames atop the Davenport standings. In addition to the relay win, the foursome also claimed four individual titles on the night.

“We had a feeling that our dual meet against North Attleboro would be relatively close, maybe even down to the relays, and if I had to pick four people to secure the team victory, it was going always to be these four,” said Foxboro coach Matt Smith. “They’ve been putting in an incredible body of work so far this season and we really got to see that here; three of the four were on their third event of the day and they all still dug deep to secure the relay and the meet.”

North led 48-42 going into the final two relays of the meet. After Foxboro’s 4×200 relay team (Mia Flanagan, Keira D’Arcy, Adriana Alberts, and Chloe McGarry) won to keep the Warriors in contention for the overall win, the Foxboro 4×400 team raced home with a time of 4:15.69, which was the best time in the league (North had the second-best time in the league, nearly three seconds slower) to secure the dual meet win. Lauren Bober was the anchor and closed with an impressive 1:00.6. In addition to the relay victory, Lauren Bober also won the 300m and the 55M dash, Faith Bober won the 55M hurdles and was second in the high jump, and Share won the 600M. Luck added a second in the 55M hurdles.
