Oliver Ames senior David MacKinnon has been selected as the inaugural Mr. Hockomock, an award given to the top student-athlete of the school year as chosen by the staff of HockomockSports.com. MacKinnon captained both the soccer and baseball teams this past season. 

The 6-foot-2 goalkeeper and shortstop/pitcher will attend the University of Hartford in the Fall of 2013 and will continue to play both sports at the Division I level. He earned a 4.1 GPA while taking three AP classes his senior year at Oliver Ames.

“David was basically a no-brainer for this award,” said HockomockSports.com Editor-in-Chief Ryan Lanigan. “It’s not very often when you’re as talented as him both on the field and in the classroom.”

MacKinnon was awarded the HockomockSports.com Davenport Player of the Year for soccer and the HockomockSports.com Player of the Year for baseball, the first time both awards have been given out. He was also voted Most Valuable Player by the coaches in both sports in the the 2012-2013 season. 

“David MacKinnon was an outstanding leader,” said OA boys soccer coach John Barata. “He had all the traits that you look for in a leader – someone that can be vocal and leads by example – and those are two things you really don’t find in high school kids these days.”

In his time as a Tiger, MacKinnon compiled a career record of 108-40-16, good for a .744 winning percentage, reaching the postseason in all eight seasons he played. In his senior season in soccer, he had 11 shutouts and allowed just six goals during the regular season. He was named an Eastern Massachusetts All-Star and an All-American. For baseball, he led the Tigers in regular season batting average at .515 and chipped in with 14 RBIs batting leadoff. 

Described as a “true gentleman” by OA baseball skipper Leo Duggan, MacKinnon was known for his work ethic on the diamond. 

“We’ve won close to 70 games since he’s been here,” said Duggan. “He came as a skinny little freshman and he’s worked hard to get where he is. David’s a hard worker. I have to kick him out of the batting cages.”

MacKinnon was selected as the male scholar athlete at Oliver Ames and was honored at a reception in early May.

“You have to be dedicated to your sport but you have to realize you’re there to learn and get into college,” said MacKinnon. “You have to find a healthy medium to get your homework done and doing well on your tests.”

“He’s just fun,” said Barata. “He is fun to be around so not only did he lead by example, but kids just wanted to be with him.”
