2022 HockomockSports Boys Hockey Awards
Franklin senior Dylan Marchand has been named the 2022 HockomockSports.com Boys Hockey Player of the Year after a terrific season that saw the Panthers win the Kelley-Rex division title for the 11th straight year.

Marchand had a terrific year on the ice for the Panthers and was the most dynamic forward in the Hockomock League this year. He was also selected as the Hockomock League MVP. Two seasons ago, Marchand was named the HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year as a sophomore.

Going up against some of the top teams in the state, Marchand was Franklin’s go-to option in the offensive zone. He scored 12 goals and was second in the league with 17 assists for a total of 29 points during the regular season. The Panthers played a handful of teams in the top 15 of Division 1 including Natick, Reading, Hingham, Belmont, Reading, and Catholic Memorial, as well as eventual D1 State Champions. Marchand had a goal as the Panthers lost by just one.

“When Dylan picks up a head of steam, he’s nearly unstoppable,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “One of the fastest skaters I’ve covered, Dylan could turn any routine play into a breakaway and he could finish with the best in the league. Franklin played some of the state’s best teams this winter (including D1 champ St. John’s Prep) and, win or lose, Dylan always stood out regardless of who he was facing.”

“Dylan is a player with great speed that has the ability to change a game in an instant,” said Franklin head coach Anthony Sarno. “I call him the Energizer Bunny, as he never stops…great kid and a pleasure to have. He is going to be missed.”

This is the second time a Franklin player has won this honor, snapping a five-year streak by Canton players. He joins Ryan Spillane (2015) as Panthers to be named Player of the Year. Other previous winners include Canton’s Johnny Hagam (2020), Ryan Nolte (2018, 2019) Jackson Maffeo (2017, 2016), and Brian Brooks (2013), as well as Oliver Ames’ Tyler Provost (2014).

Honorable Mention: Sean Connolly (Canton), Brad Guden (King Philip), Nik Kojoain (North Attleboro)

Franklin sophomore Cole Pouliot-Porter took over in net for the Panthers this season and looked like a veteran from the start, helping the program clinch yet another Kelley-Rex title. Not only was Pouliot-Porter successful in league play, but he also had strong performances against some of the best teams in the state. He finished the regular season with 459 saves in 18.2 games played, posting a 2.62 goals against average with a 0.910% save percentage. “What can I say, he was our heart and our backbone all season,” said Franklin head coach Anthony Sarno. “This kid is just amazing and only 15 years old. To me and our squad, we consider him the best in the state! I can’t say enough about Cole, such a great person off the ice and in the classroom as well. A pleasure to have on our team.”

Rocco BianculliBrad Guden – King Philip – Defense
King Philip sophomore defenseman Brad Guden followed up his breakout rookie campaign by moving back to defense and having an even better second season, helping the Warriors go on a run from the midway point of the season that clinched a playoff spot and built momentum for a dominant win in the opening round against Weymouth. KP closed the year by holding eventual state champion St. John’s Prep to a 3-1 game in the second round. Guden was a dynamic attacking threat for the Warriors and made his presence felt in all three zones and all phases of the game. He was third on the team in scoring with seven goals and 17 assists in 21 games. The HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year (see below), Guden was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. KP coach Paul Carlow said, “Brad was a strong defender and excellent in transition. He can escape the forecheck with his edge work and his ability to handle the puck. He was only a sophomore but plays a mature game.”

Tom TaskerSean Connolly – Canton – Defense
Canton senior defenseman Sean Connolly wrapped up his impressive four-year varsity career by helping the Bulldogs win a 12th straight league title and reach the Div. 2 state title game at the TD Garden for the third straight season. Connolly, who was named the Hockomock League MVP as a junior, scored five goals and recorded 11 assists this season, including a pair of goals in Canton’s 6-3 win over Gloucester in the D2 Final Four. Someone who played in all phases of the game and was one of the team’s leaders in ice time, Connolly was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches this season. Canton coach Brian Shuman said, “Sean was our defensive rock this past season, playing huge minutes and always bringing his best in the biggest games. He shut down the opposition’s best players and his ability to see the ice generated a lot of scoring opportunities for us.”

Johnny HaganDylan Marchand – Franklin – Forward
Franklin senior Dylan Marchand had a dominant season on the ice for the Kelley-Rex division champion Panthers. A speedy, skilled forward, Marchand was a handful for opposing defenses to deal with. He was among the top scorers in the league with 12 goals and was a catalyst in setting up the Panther offense, finishing with 17 assists in the regular season. “Dylan is a player with great speed that has the ability to change a game in an instant,” said Franklin head coach Anthony Sarno. “I call him the Energizer Bunny, as he never stops…great kid and a pleasure to have. He is going to be missed.”

Chris JenkinsNik Kojoian – North Attleboro – Forward
North Attleboro senior forward Nik Kojoian was among the best players in the Hockomock League yet again this season. Any time he was on the ice, he demanded the attention of his opponents because of his ability to punish defenses. Strong with the puck on his stick, he has a great eye for finding teammates and setting them up for goal scoring opportunities. He finished the regular season as the Hockomock League’s top point producer, scoring 11 goals while adding a league-best 24 assists for a total of 35 points. He was also selected as a league all star.

Dennis MorehouseJack Watts – Foxboro – Forward
Foxboro senior forward Jack Watts got off to a flying start to his fourth season on varsity, helping a relatively young Warriors team jump out to a 3-0 start with 17 goals scored. Although injuries would limit him to 11 games this season, he was still the team leader with 14 goals and 13 assists, averaging more than two points per game, and helping the Warriors earn a spot in the Div. 3 state tournament. Foxboro battled injuries as a team, but with the lineup healthy, the Warriors pushed Medway to the limit in the opening round of the playoffs. Watts was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Foxboro coach Mark Cedorchuk said, “Jack is a true power forward. With his size and skill, he can get the puck to the net almost at will or find an open teammate. There’s no doubt in my mind if he had a full healthy season, he would have the most points in our league if not the entire state.”

2022

Colin DavisColin Davis – Canton – Goalie
Canton freshman goalie Colin Davis had a breakout season for the Bulldogs, earning the starting job early in the season and proving to be ready for the tough task of facing the league and the state’s best teams. He saved 93 percent of the shots he faced this season and was one of the reasons that Canton allowed only 37 goals in 26 games this year. He helped Canton clinch a 12th straight league title and reach the Div. 2 state title game at the TD Garden for the third straight season. In his 11 games during the regular season, Davis allowed only 0.82 goals per game and provided big moments to deny comeback attempts in the playoffs by the likes of Plymouth North and Gloucester. Canton coach Brian Shuman said, “Colin was the first freshman to earn the starting job for the Bulldogs in almost two decades. His stats speak for themselves, but it was the number of huge saves down the stretch that helped us have a deep run in the playoffs.”

Jack MacKinnonJack MacKinnon – Franklin – Defense
Franklin senior Jack MacKinnon had a great comeback season, captaining the Panthers to their 11th straight Kelley-Rex division title and a trip to the Division 1 state tournament. Still battling through an injury, MacKinnon is a smart defenseman that reads the ice very well. He can jump into the offense too and does a nice job moving the puck around in the offensive zone. “He gave us everything he could once he was cleared,” Franklin coach Anthony Sarno said. “I cannot say enough great things about Jack. He is just an amazing young man and elite in the classroom as well, a National Homer Society member and highly respected by his peers for all he brings to the table. He works extremely hard to improve himself each and every day and has a very bright future shared. He will be missed.”

Brennan PecararoBrennen Pecararo – Canton – Defense
Canton senior defenseman Brennen Pecararo stepped into the lineup this season, after playing for juniors the previous three years, and made an instant impact in all three zones to help the Bulldogs retain the Davenport division title and return to the TD Garden to play for the Div. 2 state title. His skills on offense made him a constant scoring threat and he also gave Canton another top-four defenseman to keep things solid in the defensive zone. He scored eight goals and had 18 assists this season, including a pair of goals against Gloucester in the Final Four. He was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Canton coach Brian Shuman said, “To say that Brennen was a huge addition to this team this year would be an understatement. Franklin senior Christian Shabbick had a standout season on the ice at forward for the Kelley-Rex division-winning Panthers. Noted as one of the most improved players on the squad, Shabbick gave Franklin much-needed depth in its attack as the Panthers battled some of the top teams in the state. He finished the regular season with 12 goals and 12 assists, including two goals against eventual state champs St. John’s Prep. “Christian Shabbick has been my most improved and hardest working player day in and day out,” said Franklin head coach Anthony Sarno. “He works so hard and has a great skill set and he put that on display for everyone to witness this season. He is a great teammate as well. He deserved to be an All Star as he represents what an All Star should be!”

Brendan TourgeeBrendan Tourgee – Canton – Forward
Canton sophomore forward Brendan Tourgee had a breakout season for the Bulldogs this winter, jumping onto the top line and becoming one of the team’s most dynamic attacking threats. He scored 11 goals and had 16 assists and showed off an array of moves with the puck that opened up space for his teammates to create. He was one of the reasons for the Bulldogs winning a 12th straight league title and reaching the Div. 2 state title game for a third straight season. His emergence was a factor in Canton scoring a league-high 117 goals in 26 games and going on a 22-game win streak that took them back to the final. He was an Honorable Mention for league all-star. Canton coach Brian Shuman said, “Brendan is a gifted offensive talent. He has excellent speed and a real knack for scoring big goals.”

Nick LongaNick Longa – North Attleboro – Forward
North Attleboro senior Nick Longa emerged as one of the top offensive players in the Hock this season, helping the Rocketeers make a return trip to the state tournament under first-year head coach Kyle Heagney. After a solid junior season (nine points), Longa really had a breakout year as one of the premier goal scorers in the league. Playing alongside classmate Nik Kojoian, Longa lit the lamp 17 times in the regular season (second-most in the Hock) and finished with a total of 26 points (tied for fifth-most).

2022

Nick PiazzaNick Piazza – Attleboro – Goalie
Attleboro senior goalie Nick Piazza stood tall between the pipes this season, despite frequently facing a barrage of shots. Although Piazza finished the regular season with a goals against average of 5.27, he also led the league by a significant margin with 733 saves (more than 200 more than the next closest goalie). The four-year starter saved just under 90 percent of the shots he faced and will be playing juniors with the Walpole Express next year with the goal of finding a college spot. Piazza was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Attleboro coach Greg Chamberlain said of Piazza, “This kid was our team. I think every coach after every game shook my hand and said ‘man your goalie is really good.’ Nick has been outstanding all four years, if he was on a team with a solid chunk of talent he would be a state champion goalie everywhere. The Attleboro hockey team would be lost without Nick.”

Anthony WescottAnthony Wescott – North Attleboro – Defense
North Attleboro senior Anthony Wescott was one of the best two-way players in the Hockomock League this season, playing a key role for the Rocketeers. North finished second in the Davenport division, winning five of their eight league games played this season. In the defensive zone, Wescott made a lot of smart plays and always seemed to be in the right place at the right time to disrupt opposing offenses. He was also a key piece in North’s offense, leading all defensemen in points this season with 16 assists, which was third overall in the Hockomock League during the regular season. He also scored once for the Big Red.

Colton ScheralisColton Scheralis – Taunton – Defense
Taunton junior Colton Scheralis didn’t start out as a defenseman for the Tigers but his skill set allowed him to be converted into one and he excelled at that position this year. He scored three goals and recorded 10 assists in 18 games, earning a plus-one rating over the course of the season. Scheralis was one of the reasons that a young Taunton team was able to reach the Div. 3 state tournament through his effort and skill moving the puck in all three zones. Scheralis was an Honorable Mention for league all-star, as chosen by Hockomock coaches. Taunton coach Kris Metea said, “Colton is one of the most skilled players in the Hockomock League. He made the ultimate sacrifice to play defense this season for the program and lead a large group of underclassmen on the back end, of which he should be commended for. His presence alone makes a big impact, one larger than any scoreboard could tell.”

Eamon KellyEamon Kelly – Canton – Forward
Canton senior forward Eamon Kelly wrapped up his four-year varsity career with another impressive season not only as a scoring threat on the top line but also as one of Canton’s on-ice leaders. He scored 11 goals and had 12 assists this season, but also added a strong forecheck and tons of energy every time he stepped onto the ice. He helped Canton win a 12th straight Davenport division title, extend its league win streak to 43 games, and reach the Div. 2 state title game for the third straight year. He has only lost four times in his four-year career at Canton. Kelly was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Canton coach Brian Shuman said, “Eamon was the heartbeat of this team. He battled through injuries all year long, inspiring his teammates with his toughness and elevating his game when we needed it most. He played his best against the best competition.”

Nolan FeylerNolan Feyler – King Philip – Forward
King Philip senior forward Nolan Feyler returned from an injury that kept him out for the entirety of his junior season to finish second on the team in goals, assists, and points and helping the Warriors go on a late-season run that included a dominant win in the opening round of the playoffs and holding eventual state champion St. John’s Prep to a 3-1 game in the second round. KP coach Paul Carlow said, “Nolan’s an excellent skater. He can create separation with his speed and that lead to scoring chances. He handles the puck well and shoots it even better. He was a threat to score whenever he had the puck in the offensive zone.”

2022 HockomockSports Boys Hockey Awards
King Philip sophomore defenseman Brad Guden has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Boys Hockey Underclassman of the Year for the 2021-2022 season. This is the eighth season that the award has been given out. He is the first King Philip player to earn this honor.

“Brad can control the game in all three zones and plays with the poise of someone much older,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “He has great speed and passing on the breakout and dynamic skill with the puck in the offensive zone but doesn’t do it at the expense of his defensive responsibility. Even though he was just a sophomore, Brad was one of the best in the league at finding that balance.”

Guden played center last season as a freshman and moved back to a defensive role this year but was still third on the team in scoring. He had seven goals and 17 assists in 21 games. He helped KP overcome a tough start to the season, as the Warriors made a push to finish second in the Kelley-Rex division, clinch a playoff spot, and then reach the second round to face top seed and eventual state champion St. John’s Prep. With Guden on the blue line, KP was third in the league in goals scored (72) and allowed the second-fewest (53).

“Brad was a strong defender and excellent in transition,” said KP coach Paul Carlow. “He can escape the forecheck with his edge work and his ability to handle the puck. He was the QB on our power play and a big part of our offense. Brad had at least one point in every game that we won. He was only a sophomore but plays a mature game.”

Guden is the fourth player from the Kelley-Rex division to win the award and third in a row. He joins North Attleboro’s Sean Young (2013), Mansfield’s Matty Copponi (2019), and Franklin’s Dylan Marchand (2020) as winners from the Kelley-Rex. He is also the second defenseman to be named Underclassman of the Year, following Canton’s Jackson Maffeo in 2015.

2022

Cole Pouliot-PorterCole Pouliot-Porter – Franklin – Goalie
Franklin sophomore Cole Pouliot-Porter looked like a seasoned veteran more than a first-year starter, helping the Panthers clinch another Kelley-Rex division title. Playing against some of the best teams and offenses in the state, Pouliot-Porter turned in strong performance after strong performance, giving Franklin a chance in those contests. He finished the regular season with 459 saves in 18.2 games played, posting a 2.62 goals against average with a 0.910% save percentage. “Everywhere we go and teams we play, they always comment about how mature and incredible skilled Cole is, especially for his young age,” said Franklin head coach Anthony Sarno. “Looking forward to seeing him between the pipe next season as he grows and matures even more.”

Brad GudenBrad Guden – King Philip – Defense

He finished third on the Warriors in scoring with seven goals and 17 assists, leading the team’s attack from the blue line. He helped KP turn things around midway through the season, culminating in a playoff appearance and a dominating first-round win over Weymouth. KP coach Paul Carlow said, “He was the QB on our power play and a big part of our offense. Brad had at least one point in every game that we won.”

Logan MarchandLogan Marchand – Franklin – Defense
Franklin sophomore Logan Marchand battled through injury all season but still was a big contributor for the Kelley-Rex division champs. Despite playing against some of the best offenses the state has to offer, Marchand was a rock in the defensive zone for the Panthers. He finished the regular season with three goals and added eight assists for 11 points. “Logan Marchand is as tough of a defenseman as you will find for a sophomore,” said Franklin head coach Anthony Sarno. “He has size strength and the ability to transition to offense pretty quick. He is such a good teammate and a great person, any coach would love to have him. I can’t wait to see him with two good strong knees next season as he will be a dominating force on the blue line again!”

Brendan TourgeeBrendan Tourgee – Canton – Forward
Tourgee, a sophomore forward, was one of Canton’s leading scorers this season with 11 goals and 16 assists while playing on the top line for the Bulldogs. His emergence as a dominant force in the attacking zone was one of the reasons for Canton leading the league in goals with 117, winning another Davenport division title, and reaching the TD Garden for the third straight year. Canton coach Brian Shuman said, “Brendan is a gifted offensive talent. He has excellent speed and a real knack for scoring big goals.”

Andrew LivingstoneAndrew Livingstone – Oliver Ames – Forward
Livingstone, a sophomore forward, led Oliver Ames in goals and points this season and helped the Tigers stay on the edge of state tournament qualification until the final weeks of the regular season. He finished with 12 goals and eight assists, for a team-high 20 points. He was an Honorable Mention for league all-star. His ability to see the ice and get to stops is nice to see for a sophomore. I can’t wait to see him as he grows and matures as a player.”

2022 HockomockSports Boys Hockey Awards
Franklin sophomore Cole Pouliot-Porter has been selected as the 2022 HockomockSports.com Goalie of the Year. It’s the ninth season this honor has been awarded, and the first time a sophomore has won the award since the inaugural year it was given out (2013).

“Cole had a terrific year between the pipes for the Panthers,” said HockomockSports.com Editor Ryan Lanigan. “It’s one thing to ease into the varsity level on an average team, but this was basically baptism by fire as Pouliot-Porter faced off against some of the best teams in the state, including a handful of top 10 teams and eventual state champs St. John’s Prep. To do that and have the success he had, it will be exciting to see his growth over the next two years.”

Pouliot-Porter was also named to the HockomockSports.com First Team and All-Underclassman this season after making 459 saves in 18.2 games played, posting a 2.62 goals against average with a 0.910% save percentage. He’s the first sophomore to win the honor since Oliver Ames’ Jimmy Tierney did so in 2013. Tierney went on to win it again the following year and is the only goalie to win the honor twice.

Pouliot-Porter joins Ryan Shea (2015) and Owen Ginley (2018) as Franklin goalies to earn this honor. Other previous winners include Canton’s Justin Slocum (2016) and Quinn Gibbs (2017), North Attleboro’s Ryan Warren (2019), and Foxboro’s Espen Reager (2020).

Honorable Mention: Colin Davis (Canton), Nick Piazza (Attleboro)

Coach of the Year – Brian Shuman, Canton

Brian ShumanCanton head coach Brian Shuman has been named the 2022 HockomockSports.com Boys Hockey Coach of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to their 12th straight Davenport division title and a third straight appearance in the Div. 2 state title game.

After an 0-2-1 start to the season, Canton would not lose again until the state final against Tewksbury at the TD Garden. Canton’s 22-game win streak included a perfect run through the Hockomock League, which stretched the Bulldogs’ run to 43 games without a loss in league play going back to the 2017 season. Canton has only lost four games overall in the past four seasons, compiling a record of 79-4-6.

Despite several players experiencing playoff action for the first time, Canton didn’t slow down once the postseason began, scoring at least three goals in each of the first four tournament games, including six against No. 2 seed Gloucester. In 26 games this season, Canton scored 117 goals and allowed only 37. Defensively, the Bulldogs allowed nine goals in the opening two games and six in the final two (one on an empty net), but only 22 goals over the remainder of the season. Only three times was Canton held to fewer than two goals.

“Brian is almost making it seem easy to continually roll out teams that can compete with the best in the state,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “But after a tough start to the season, he had his team refocused and ready to play every game. Brian knows what the expectations are for his team, and they always seem ready to meet those challenges, in fact they seem to embrace it.”

This is the fourth time that Shuman has earned this honor, having been selected as Coach of the Year in 2013, 2014, and 2019. No other boys hockey coach has received the award more than twice. Franklin girls lacrosse coach Kristin Igoe Guarino is the only other coach to earn Coach of the Year honors four times.

Honorable Mention: Kyle Heagney (North Attleboro), Anthony Sarno (Franklin), Paul Carlow (King Philip)
