2022 HockomockSports Girls Basketball Awards

Canton senior guard Fay Gallery has been named the 2022 HockomockSports.com Girls Basketball Player of the Year, the 10th recipient in the site’s history. Gallery, a four-year starter, became just the third player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career and helped the Bulldogs win their first playoff games in 14 seasons.

“Fay took her game to another level this year,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “She had already put together an impressive first three seasons, but this winter she was Canton’s top player. There were times during the season where it looked like Fay couldn’t be stopped and she hit the biggest shot of Canton’s season to beat Westwood.”

Gallery led the Bulldogs in scoring with more than 18 points per game, which was second-best in the league. One of the Hock’s top long-range shooters, Gallery reached the 1,000-point mark during the first-round playoff win against Tewksbury. It was Canton’s first home playoff game and first playoff win since 2008. More than just a scorer, Gallery also averaged four rebounds, four assists, and four steals a night and was often Canton’s primary ball-handler.

“Being named Player of the Year is the end result of an extreme amount of sacrifice and hard work,” said Canton coach Jim Choquette. “She was able to lead our team in scoring, assists, and steals, helping provide us with a lift on both ends of the court. Fay executed at the highest level against the toughest competition and our entire coaching staff, program, and team remain extremely proud of her.”

Although Canton didn’t win the league title this season, Gallery helped the Bulldogs get a No. 10 seed in Div. 2. In the playoff win over Tewksbury, Gallery scored 18 points, including 11 in the first quarter to help the Bulldogs build a big early lead. She also made a couple of big free throws to clinch the win. In the second round at Westwood, Gallery knocked down a three-pointer in the closing seconds of overtime to send the Bulldogs to the Elite Eight for the first time.

Gallery is the second Canton player to earn this award for basketball, joining Devin Foster (2018-19). She is the seventh female Canton athlete to be named Player of the Year, joining Lauren Berman (soccer, 2012), Kellie Stigas (field hockey, 2013), Avery Devoe (volleyball, 2013), Erin Proctor (volleyball, 2014), Elizabeth Hamilton (volleyball, 2015), and Taylor Harris (volleyball, 2019).

Honorable Mentions: Caroline Peper (Oliver Ames), Meghan Gordon (Attleboro), Kameron St. Pierre (Taunton)

She became just the third player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark and produced big moments in big games, including a game-winning three in overtime against Westwood in the Sweet Sixteen. Canton coach Jim Choquette said, “Fay brought a strong desire to win and improve our team each night throughout the season. She also led the team in three-point shooting and two-point field goal percentage. With a 30-point performance against North Middlesex, Peper became the ninth player in program history to top 1,000 career points. She was a three-time league all-star. She will be remembered most for her unselfishness and tenacity at which she plays the game.”

Kameron St. PierreKameron St. Pierre – Taunton – Guard
Taunton junior guard Kameron St. Pierre took her performances to another level this season. St. Pierre didn’t play during the COVID-shortened 2021 season but came back to lead the league in scoring (20.9 points per game) and show off an improved all-around game. In addition to her scoring touch, St. Pierre averaged six rebounds and five assists per night and was the leader on the floor for a young Tigers roster. Adding strength and creativity around the rim to her already impressive range, St. Pierre was hard to stop even when the defense was focused primarily on her. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Taunton coach Amy Siggens said, “Kameron really found her game this past season and continues to work hard every day as a player and as a captain for our team. There is a lot ahead for Kameron here at THS and we are very much looking forward to what is to come for her and our program.”

Gordon was named an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Attleboro coach Bri Bracken said, “Meghan was one of the most versatile players in our program. A pleasure to coach this season.”

Katie PetersonKatie Peterson – Franklin – Forward
Franklin junior forward Katie Peterson made a huge leap this season, developing from a role player on last year’s team into the leading scorer this season. Peterson averaged 14 points per game, while also leading the team in steals and deflections and shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. With the range to stretch defenses and the ability to take it to the basket off the dribble, Peterson helped Franklin win a fourth straight league title, completing a perfect Hock campaign, and advancing to the Div. 1 Elite Eight. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Franklin coach John Leighton said, “I am so proud of Katie’s development this season. Stefany PadulaStefany Padula – Franklin – Guard
Franklin senior guard Stefany Padula developed into one of the league’s top outside shooters and one of its top perimeter defenders this season. The Springfield College commit helped Franklin win a fourth straight league title and reach the Div. 1 Elite Eight. Padula averaged 11 points per game and shot 40 percent from long-range this season, giving the Panthers a threat from deep to complement its strength in the paint. Padula was selected as a Hockomock League all-star by the coaches. Franklin coach John Leighton said, “Stef has served as a role model to younger players in our program. She is the first on the court and the last to leave as she tirelessly works to improve her game.”

Abby WagerAbby Wager – Mansfield – Guard
Mansfield junior guar Abby Wager was a dominant presence on both ends of the floor for the Hornets this season, helping them book a spot in the state tournament and nearly pull an upset of highly ranked Woburn in the first round. Wager averaged 14 points per game but also had 51 blocks, using her quickness and length to be a tough matchup on offense and defense. She also came through in big moments, such as putting up a career-high 34 points in a preliminary round win over Doherty. Mansfield coach Heather McPherson said, “As an offensive player, Abby kept defenders honest, being able to score with a long-range three, a pull-up jumper, or taking it to the basket. I was beyond impressed with her defensive presence this year, she demonstrated the ability to stay with quick guards but also handle post players.”

Jasmyn CooperJasmyn Cooper – Oliver Ames – Forward
Oliver Ames sophomore Jasmyn Cooper had a breakout season for the Tigers, helping them secure the Davenport and the Div. 2 state titles. The HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year (see below) demonstrated her dominant all-around game, scoring 14.6 points and grabbing 9.7 rebounds per game while dishing out 61 assists and shooting 52 percent from the floor and 72 percent at the line. She was named a Hockomock League all-star. OA coach Laney Clement-Holbrook said, “Although her freshman season was cut short to just 10 games, Jasmyn has consistently improved and has made a significant impact. A dominant force on the boards, Jasmyn’s inside game has helped OA’s run during the second half of the season.”

Olivia QuinnOlivia Quinn – Franklin – Forward
Franklin senior forward Olivia Quinn had another impressive season for the Panthers, helping them win a fourth straight Kelley-Rex division title and reach the Div. 1 Elite Eight. Franklin lost only one league game (and six games overall) in her four-year career. The Wesleyan University commit averaged 11 points per game this season and finished with 904 for her career (missing out on reaching 1,000 because of the COVID-shortened 2021 season). She also came up big in the playoffs with 23 and 25 points in her final two games. She was selected as a league all-star. Franklin coach John Leighton said, “Olivia is one of the best players to ever come out of this program. She has played an integral role in our unprecedented success over her four years.”

2022 HockomockSports Girls Basketball Awards

Camryn CollinsCamryn Collins – Foxboro – Guard
Foxboro sophomore guard Camryn Collins emerged as one of the most dynamic guards in the league during her first full season, helping the young Warriors reach the Div. 2 Sweet Sixteen and a rematch with league champ Oliver Ames. Collins averaged 12.9 points per game this year but showed off more of her all-around skill set by adding 6.5 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Foxboro coach Lisa Downs said, “Cam stepped into a much more significant role this year and she did so flawlessly. She was relied upon to not only get to the basket, rebound, and initiate steals; but this year she developed her outside game, could guard some of the best offensive threats, and improved her running game which in turn made all of her teammates better.”

Summer DohertySummer Doherty – North Attleboro – Guard
North Attleboro senior Summer Doherty was a consistent performer in the backcourt for the Rocketeers this season, bouncing back from an injury-shortened junior year to provide leadership for a young roster. Doherty played more than 500 minutes for North this season and averaged more than 11 points per game. She knocked down 30 threes and had 28 assists, while also adding 24 steals as a tenacious perimeter defender. Doherty was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. North Attleboro coach Nikki Correia said, “After missing her junior year due to an injury three games into the season, she came back stronger than ever for her final season. Summer was the leader on this team on and off the court. She brought a sense of energy and leadership every practice and every game.”

Kailey SullivanKailey Sullivan – Foxboro – Guard
Foxboro freshman guard Kailey Sullivan stepped right into the point guard position for Foxboro this winter and showed a game that belied her lack of varsity experience. She led the Warriors in scoring at 15.3 points per game, scoring 20 or more points in seven games this season, while also getting the team into its sets and providing solid defense on the perimeter. Sullivan helped the Warriors reach the Div. 2 Sweet Sixteen and was selected as a Hockomock League all-star. Foxboro coach Lisa Downs said, “Kailey is the freshman player that very few public schools are lucky enough to receive. Once she began playing with the returning Varsity team last summer and fall, I was confident that she was going to be able to immediately step into a starting position.”

Jasmine DavisJasmine Davis – Sharon – Forward
Sharon sophomore forward Jasmine Davis burst onto the scene this season to become one of the top scorers and rebounders in the league and an almost automatic double-double for the Eagles. Davis averaged 16.8 points and 15.5 rebounds per game, totaling more than 300 of each category. After sitting out her freshman season, Davis stepped right in with a 32-point, 28-rebound debut against Milford and displayed an array of offensive moves in the paint and the ability to change shots on the defensive end. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Sharon coach Sandy Lombardi said, “Jasmine had a great season for the Sharon Eagles. She is a league all-star and team MVP. I expect great things from her the next two seasons.”

Emily SawyerEmily Sawyer – King Philip – Center
King Philip junior center Emily Sawyer became a focal point for the Warriors on both ends of the floor, using her 6-foot-3 frame to be a dominant presence in the paint. Sawyer averaged 10 points per game, while also grabbing 11 rebounds and blocking a shot per night. Even when not getting to the glass or blocking a shot, teams needed to account for her, one of the factors in KP becoming one of the league’s top defensive teams and reaching the Div. 1 Round of 32. Sawyer came up with a big night in the playoffs with 16 points and 17 rebounds against Plymouth North. KP coach Jeff Miszkiewicz said, “Emily really evolved her game over the season to fit our system. She really shined with her help defense and off-ball movement, making her a really complete player on both sides of the ball.”

2022 HockomockSports Girls Basketball Awards
Oliver Ames sophomore forward Jasmyn Cooper has been named the 2022 HockomockSports.com Girls Basketball Underclassman of the Year; the ninth season this award has been given out to the top freshman or sophomore in the league. Cooper was a key piece of OA’s run to a Davenport division and Div. 2 state title.

Cooper was OA’s second-leading scorer, averaging 14.6 points per game, and an almost automatic double-double, finishing with 9.7 rebounds per night. She led the Tigers by making 52 percent of her shots from the field, shot 72 percent from the line, and dished out 61 assists. Although she was nominally a forward, Cooper was also one of the team’s primary ballhandlers and was frequently asked to defend multiple positions in the same game.

“Jasmyn lived up to her immense potential in some of the biggest games of the season,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “She is a complete player, seemingly never flustered, and capable of playing any position on the floor. Jasmyn was locking down guards, driving past bigs, grabbing important rebounds, and becoming one of the best players on a state title-winning team.”

Her game seemed to improve when the stage was the biggest. In the playoffs, Cooper scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds against Foxboro, had 23 points and 10 rebounds against Dracut, nearly recorded a triple-double against Medfield in the Final Four (14 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists), and led all players in the state final against Norwood with 22 points and 10 boards.

Oliver Ames coach Laney Clement-Holbrook said, “Jasmyn has risen to the occasion as a second-year starter. Although her freshman season was cut short to just 10 games, Jasmyn has consistently improved and has made a significant impact. A dominant force on the boards, Jasmyn’s inside game has helped OA’s run during the second half of the season and into the postseason ending with an all-star performance in the D2 state championship game.”

Cooper is the first OA girls basketball player to be named Underclassman of the Year. Other OA players to receive this honor in their respective sports include Nathaniel Cardoza (2015) and Colin Milliken (2018) for boys soccer, Francesca Calabraro (2014) for girls soccer, Allison Kemp (2017) for volleyball, Hannah Friend (2013) for field hockey, and Matt Muir (2016) for baseball.

Collins helped the Warriors reach the Div. 2 Sweet Sixteen. Foxboro coach Lisa Downs said, “Cam stepped into a much more significant role this year and she did so flawlessly. Her speed and overall athleticism makes her a very difficult matchup.”

Kaydance DerbaKaydance Derba, Oliver Ames
Derba, a sophomore guard, is a two-year starter and played a key role as the Tigers won the program’s third state championship. Derba averaged 8.6 points per game, led the team with 98 assists, and was third on the team in blocks, while also giving OA a long-range threat. OA coach Laney Clement-Holbrook said, “Kaydance as a sophomore truly came into her own as a dependable ball handler and an offensive creator that helped OA lead the Davenport division in points per game at 62.5.”

Kailey SullivanKailey Sullivan, Foxboro
Sullivan, a freshman point guard, led Foxboro in scoring in her first varsity season, averaging 15.3 points per game and scoring 20 or more points seven times this year. She helped lead a young lineup into the Div. 2 Sweet Sixteen and was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. Foxboro coach Lisa Downs said, “As she became more comfortable with my expectations and her role, her confidence grew quickly. She developed into a premier player this season and I am excited to watch her continue to flourish.”

Jasmyn CooperJasmyn Cooper, Oliver Ames
Cooper, a sophomore forward, was second on Oliver Ames with 14.6 points per game and grabbed 9.7 rebounds a night while shooting 52 percent from the floor and 72 percent from the line. Capable of playing any position, Cooper gave OA important inside scoring, while also being one of the team’s primary ball handlers. She led the team in scoring twice during OA’s run through the playoffs, including the state title game, and nearly had a triple-double against Medfield in the Final Four.

Jasmine DavisJasmine Davis, Sharon
Davis, a sophomore forward, debuted on varsity this season and was a dominant presence in the paint at both ends of the floor. She averaged 16.8 points and 15.5 rebounds per game, becoming an almost automatic double-double. Davis set the tone from opening night when she scored 32 points and grabbed 28 rebounds in an overtime win over Milford. Sharon coach Sandy Lombardi said, “Jasmine had a great season. She is a league all star and team MVP. I expect great things from her the next two seasons.”

2022 HockomockSports Girls Basketball Awards

Oliver Ames senior guard Hailey Bourne has been named the 2022 HockomockSports.com Girls Basketball Defensive Player of the Year. Bourne is the seventh player to receive this honor in the 10 years that it has been given out and helped the Tigers win the program’s 19 league title and third state championship.

Bourne, a four-year starter, is a tenacious defender who guards multiple positions. Despite not being the biggest player on the floor, she is frequently tasked with guarding opposition post players because her strength and positioning enable her to be in the right spots, but Bourne can also put pressure on ballhandlers on the perimeter. She finished second on the team in steals and forced turnovers and was also a solid rebounder. The state champion Tigers finished the season allowing the second-fewest points per game in the league.

“Hailey makes life difficult for whoever she is guarding,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “Her aggressiveness on the perimeter means every pass, every shot is contested, but she also drops back into the paint and will use leverage to keep bigger players away from the basket. It’s always easy to pick out who OA thinks is the biggest offensive threat on the other team because that’s who Hailey will be matched up with.”

Oliver Ames coach Laney Clement-Holbrook said, “She has been clearly the best defensive player in the Hockomock League. She has had a major impact on our success over the past two seasons. Unselfish, strong, and hardworking, Hailey has shut down most of the league’s leading scorers.”

Bourne is the first OA player to receive this award. She is also the third player from the Davenport division to be named Defensive Player of the Year, following Stoughton’s Nicole Daniels (2011 and 2012) and Foxboro’s Lily Sykes (2018).

2022 HockomockSports Girls Basketball Awards

Kayla GoldrickKayla Goldrick, Attleboro
Goldrick, a sophomore guard, was Attleboro’s top perimeter defender, tasked with guarding the opposition’s primary ball handler. She averaged 7.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, while also harassing players on the other end of the floor with her quickness and reading of the game. Attleboro coach Bri Bracken said, “Kayla is my top defender as she has been asked to cover the opposing team’s top scorer. She never backed down from the challenge. Can’t wait to see what she is capable of in the next two seasons.”

Stefany PadulaStefany Padula, Franklin
Padula, a senior guard, is a tireless worker who has developed her game in so many ways over the course of her four-year career. This season she became one of the league’s top perimeter defenders, frequently being matched up with the opposition’s best scorers. Her work rate, length, and ability to read the game made her tough to shake. Franklin coach John Leighton called her the “top defender” on the league champion Panthers, adding, “She is the first on the court and the last to leave as she tirelessly works to improve her game.”

Abby WagerAbby Wager, Mansfield
Wager, a junior guard, used her speed and length to cause problems on both ends of the floor. She had 51 blocks this season, making it difficult for the opposition to finish around the rim and also challenging shots on the perimeter. Her long arms also made her a threat to get a steal every trip down court and quickly turn them into fast break points. Mansfield coach Heather McPherson said, “I was beyond impressed with her defensive presence this year, she demonstrated the ability to stay with quick guards but also handle post players.”

Hailey BourneHailey Bourne, Oliver Ames
Bourne, a senior forward who guards multiple positions, was a four-year starter for the Tigers and regularly tasked with guarding the top scorer on the opposing team. She finished second on the Tigers in steals and forced turnovers but her impact was larger than the stats showed and she was a two-time league all-star. OA coach Laney Clement-Holbrook said, “Hailey’s strength has been her defensive contribution. She has been clearly the best defensive player in the Hockomock League.”

Jasmyn CooperJasmyn Cooper, Oliver Ames
Cooper, a sophomore forward and the HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year (see above) was not only a force on the offensive end of the floor but also a difference-maker on defense. Her length and quickness allowed her to guard multiple positions, whether it was battling in the post or chasing guards on the perimeter like Dracut’s Ashlee Talbot or Norwood’s Erin Reen. Her defense on Talbot in the third quarter allowed OA to pull away and clinch a spot in the Div. 2 Final Four.

Coach of the Year – Laney Clement-Holbrook, Oliver Ames

Laney Clement-HolbrookOliver Ames head coach Laney Clement-Holbrook has been named the 2022 HockomockSports.com Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. Clement-Holbrook led the Tigers to a second straight Davenport division title, losing only once in Hockomock League play, and to the program’s third Div. 2 state championship.

After going a perfect 10-0 in the shortened 2020-21 season, OA came into the winter as one of the favorites in Div. 2 and played like it for the bulk of the regular season. An overtime loss to Franklin in the third game of the season was OA’s only blemish in the league and the Tigers rolled off 15 straight wins before a pair of losses to Medfield to close out the regular season. OA turned it on again in the playoffs, rolling to a big win over North Middlesex, using a late run to pull away from Foxboro, and then showing off its offensive power by scoring 84 points to beat Dracut and reach the Final Four.

The Tigers avenged their losses to Medfield in an overtime thriller and then handed top seed Norwood its only loss of the season to clinch the state title. With three sophomores in the starting lineup in the postseason and a roster that battled injuries and illness throughout the year, the Tigers finished as the top-scoring team in the Hockomock (62.5 points per game) and second to only Franklin on defense (38.6 points per game). Out of its 22 wins this season, all but four were by double digits.

“OA went through a lot this season, with its roster constantly in flux because of injuries, but there was a consistent dominance to how they played from start to finish,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “Laney had this team ready to play every day and never wavered from the ultimate goal, which was winning a state title. The team bought into the work on the defensive end and at times played teams off the floor.”

Clement-Holbrook is the first coach to win this award for the third time. She moved ahead of Foxboro’s Lisa Downs (2015 and 2018) and Franklin’s John Leighton (2019 and 2020). Four others have been named Coach of the Year three times in their respective sports: King Philip football’s Brian Lee, Mansfield boys basketball’s Mike Vaughan, Canton boys hockey’s Brian Shuman, and OA boys soccer’s John Barata. Franklin girls lacrosse coach Kristin Igoe Guarino is the only coach to earn this honor four times.

Honorable Mentions: John Leighton (Franklin), Bri Bracken (Attleboro), Lisa Downs (Foxboro), Jim Choquette (Canton)
