2019 HockomockSports Girls Lacrosse Awards
Franklin senior midfielder Annie Walsh has been named the 2019 HockomockSports.com Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year. Walsh led the Panthers to a ninth straight Kelley-Rex division title, a second straight Div. 1 East semifinal, and extend their Hockomock League win streak to 80 games.

“Annie has been one of the league’s best players for four years and during her career, Franklin has made itself a perennial state power,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “She always seems to play her best in the biggest games and is a standout all over the field, from scoring goals to grabbing draws to getting back and providing defensive cover.”

Walsh, a Boston College-commit who was also named the 2017 Underclassman of the Year and has been a three-year first team selection, scored 87 goals and had 28 assists this season. She was in the top five in the league in goals, assists, and overall points and also grabbed 112 draw controls. Walsh was a critical piece to Franklin being both the league’s top offensive and defensive units and she earned Hockomock League All-Star, EMass All-Star, and U.S. Lacrosse All-American honors this spring.

“Annie has been a stellar four-year starting midfielder for us,” said Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino, “and has left a lasting mark on our program. Her skills, leadership and work ethic are unmatched, and she will truly be missed next year!”

King Philip coach Kourtnie Wilder said, “She’s dangerous and a threat all over the field. You can tell her leadership makes an impact on the field playing with underclassmen and making them and other teammates better.”

Walsh is the first Franklin player to receive this honor since Emily Jeffries in 2015 and third player overall (Marta Versprille was Player of the Year in 2013 and 2014). She is also the third Franklin athlete to be named Player of the Year during the 2018-19 school year, following Lauren McGrath (volleyball) and Ali Brigham (girls basketball).

Honorable Mentions – Emma Eberhardt (Sharon), Sophia DiCenso (Foxboro), Caroline Klim (King Philip), Katy Garvin (Mansfield)

The University of Oregon-commit was selected as a league all-star, an EMass all-star, and as an All-American, while backstopping a defensive unit that allowed nearly 50 fewer goals than any other Hock team. She made 161 saves, stopped 50.8 percent of the shots she faced and allowed only 6.9 goals per game. Carlie SternCarlie Stern – Foxboro – Defense
Foxboro senior defender Carly Stern had to take on a much bigger defensive role than expected this season, moving from midfield and stepping in to lead the defensive unit after an injury sidelined classmate Alex Stamatos. Stern’s leadership at the back helped the Warriors secure an eighth straight division title and bring home their first Div. 2 East championship. She was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. Foxboro coach Brittany Sherry said, “She sacrificed a lot by transitioning from preferred midfield to defense, being our go-to face-guarder and causing countless turnovers throughout the season. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said, “Hailey made the move from midfield to starting defender this year because we needed a strong, smart, and fast player to lead our defense. Her leadership and communication on the defensive end really helped us win some tough games.”

With Tormey at the heart of an experienced defense, the Warriors finished with the second fewest goals allowed among Hockomock teams that made the tournament, giving up 214 in 20 games, finished second in the Kelley-Rex and reached the D1 East quarterfinal. KP coach Kourtnie Wilder said, “We relied heavily on Victoria on defense for us this season. She was our vocal leader and was able to shut down other teams’ top scorers.”

Taunton sophomore midfielder Alana Tavares has been named the 2019 HockomockSports.com Girls Lacrosse Underclassman of the Year after finishing as one of the league’s top scorers and helping the Tigers finish within one win of securing a state tournament berth.

“Alana has been a dynamic scorer since she stepped on the field as an eighth grader,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “Her speed, stick skills, and ability to find space in the defense is a step above other players her age and even with the focus of the defense on her every time she nearly scored 100 goals this season.”

Tavares scored 95 goals and added 13 assists for the Tigers this spring. She also chipped in with 97 draw controls and 66 ground balls, providing Taunton with an overall midfielder that put the program on the brink of its first playoff appearance. She was named the Hockomock League MVP this season.

“Alana is a humble player who truly knows what it means to be a team,” said Taunton coach Kerry Northup. “She puts a focus on helping the players around her do well on the field. Alana plays for the love of the game without the need for recognition. She plays with heart, leaves it all out on the field, and has fun throughout the process. She’s a great kid both on and off the field, and it is a privilege to have the opportunity to coach her.”

Tavares is the first Taunton player to be named Underclassman of the Year and the fifth player from the Kelley-Rex division to earn the honor in the seven years that it has been awarded. Kristin Igoe Guarino
Kristin Igoe Guarino

Franklin head coach Kristin Igoe Guarino has been named the 2019 HockomockSports.com Girls Lacrosse Coach of the Year after leading the Panthers to a ninth straight league title and to a second straight Div. 1 East semifinal appearance.

The Panthers played one of the toughest schedules in the state and finished with only three losses (20-3), including another perfect run through the league. Franklin extended its win streak in the Hock to 80 games dating back to 2012. Igoe Guarino has yet to suffer a single league loss since she took over the program. In addition to its success in the Hock, Franklin also earned wins against the likes of Bromfield, Lincoln-Sudbury, North Andover, and D2 state champion Cohasset this spring.

“Kristin has pushed Franklin to not only a perennial league power but one of the teams to beat in the state,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “Every year, the target is on the Panthers and everyone is aiming to knock them off their perch and every year they not only find ways to keep winning but to keep dominating. This season was no different.”

This is the fourth time that Igoe Guarino has been named the Coach of the Year in the seven times that it has been awarded. She also won in 2013, 2014, and 2017. Igoe Guarino is the second straight Kelley-Rex coach to earn this honor, following King Philip’s Kourtnie Wilder.
