2019 HockomockSports Girls Soccer Awards

King Philip senior Chloe Layne has been selected as the 2019 HockomockSports.com Girls Soccer Player of the Year. The record-setting forward led the league in scoring this fall and was selected as the Hockomock MVP and an All-American after leading the Warriors to an unbeaten regular season, the Kelley-Rex division title, and to the Div. 1 South final.

Layne put together another dominant season. The 2017 Underclassman of the Year led the league with 46 points in the regular season. She was second in the Hock with 21 goals and led the league with 25 assists. The University of Hartford-commit finished with nearly 20 points more than the second-best scorer in the league and added to that total with an impressive playoff run, which included a three-goal, two-assist performance against Hingham in the opening round.

“Chloe had a season for the ages,” said King Philip coach Gary Pichel. “Her leadership pulled the team forward to completing a perfect regular season. Chloe is a once in a lifetime player that I am so grateful to have coached these past four years. Such a gifted player in all aspects of the game. A true All-American player!”

Layne broke the program record for scoring this season and established a new career record with 143 points. Even with classmate Avery Snead injured for portions of the season, Layne proved to be unstoppable, using her skill on the ball to consistently create scoring chances and make the Warriors the league’s leading scorers, with 93 goals in 22 games.

“Chloe is the most talented player with the ball at her feet that I’ve covered,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “There were times you could only laugh as she found ways to squeeze out of double and triple teams and still create chances. KP had a dominant season and Chloe was their most dominant player. It’s been a blast to watch her for four years.”

Layne is the second King Philip player to be named Player of the Year in the past three seasons, joining Snead, who on the award in 2017. Layne also joined Snead as one of three players to be named Underclassman of the Year and Player of the Year. The third was Franklin’s Victoria Stowell.

Avery SneadAvery Snead – King Philip – Forward
King Philip senior forward Avery Snead concluded her remarkable high school career with another dominating season. Despite having to play through a series of injuries this fall, the Provide College-commit was still a major factor in the team’s success, finishing second on the Warriors in scoring, including two goals against Needham in the South semifinal and one against Feehan in the final. She won two league MVPs and was the 2016 Underclassman of the Year and 2017 Player of the Year. KP coach Gary Pichel said, “Her versatility as a complete team player is amazing. The only position she didn’t play this year was goalkeeper! Avery was responsible for completely changing our offense from an average scoring team to one of the premier scoring teams in the state.”

LizzyLizzy Davis – Foxboro – Midfield
Foxboro senior midfielder Lizzy Davis was critical to the Warriors being able to control the middle of the pitch, providing tireless running down the wing on both ends of the field and sending in dangerous crosses for the forwards. Davis was a major factor in the team winning a second straight Davenport division title, using her speed and athleticism to break down the opposition. She scored 10 goals and assisted on six this season. Foxboro coach Katie Stalcup said, “Lizzy is an athlete. She has great speed and amazing foot skills. She has a rocket shot and took most of our free kicks. She is very competitive and has a strong desire to win. She is a leader on and off the field.”

Kailee McCabeKailee McCabe – Foxboro – Midfield
Foxboro sophomore Kailee McCabe ran the midfield for the Warriors again this season, leading them to a second straight Davenport division title and a spot in the Div. 2 South quarterfinal. McCabe dominated the center of the pitch with her ability to break up opposition attacks and turn things quickly into Foxboro transitions. Her range of passing and strength enabled her to create scoring chances for herself and her teammates. McCabe scored 17 goals this season and added five assists and was named Underclassman of the Year (see below) for the second year in a row. Foxboro coach Katie Stalcup said, “Kailee is a very skilled and smart player. She is very quick on the ball and distributes well.”

Ally StantonAlly Stanton – King Philip – Midfield
King Philip senior Ally Stanton took on a new role for the Warriors this fall, moving back from forward into the heart of the midfield, and turned in a stellar season to help KP win the Kelley-Rex division title and advance to the Div. 1 South final. Even in the midfield, the Wesleyan University-commit was able to score 12 goals and assist on six others, while also providing the first line of defense against opposing attacks. Stanton was selected as an all-star by Hockomock coaches. KP coach Gary Pichel said, “Without Ally in the middle, we could not compete at the same high level throughout the season. A tough playmaker and a dominant presence inside the 20s, Ally is our ‘Ultimate Warrior’ and will always be remembered as one of our all-time best midfielders to play for KP!”

Ashleigh StarksAshleigh Starks – Milford – Midfield
Milford senior midfielder Ashleigh Starks was ever-present in the center of the pitch for the Scarlet Hawks and helped them end a six-year wait to get back into the postseason. Starks scored 10 goals and added three assists this season, giving Milford a weapon on set pieces and through the run of play, while also providing the necessary defensive cover and energy in the midfield. Milford coach Lou Colabello said, “Ashleigh was surely one of the finest midfielders I have ever coached. She is smart, possesses outstanding skills, and makes the team better just by her presence on the field. As a captain, she demonstrated leadership and was always willing to lend a hand to the younger players.”

Sabrina AddiSabrina Addi – Franklin – Defense
Franklin senior Sabrina Addi was a rock at the back for the Panthers, who tied King Philip for the fewest goals allowed this season and only allowed two goals in regulation over the final 13 games of the season. Addi dominated from her center back position and led a relatively inexperienced defensive unit. She also stepped up on the offensive side, scoring seven goals and dishing out a pair of assists. Franklin coach Tom Geysen said, “Sabrina took an inexperienced defense and helped turn it into an outstanding group of defenders. She took the challenge on and performed with outstanding consistency. She is well skilled, physical, tough, and reads the game as well as any defender we have had in a long time.”

Makayla GriffinMakayla Griffin – King Philip – Defense
King Philip senior defender Makayla Griffin was the vocal and emotional leader for the Warriors this season and helped them become one of the league’s top defensive teams (only nine goals allowed in 22 games). The Bryant University-commit was a major factor in the team’s run to the South final and setting a new program record with 21 wins with her defensive prowess and delivery on set pieces. The speedy center back was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. KP coach Gary Pichel said, “Makayla Griffin helped transform our defense into one of the best defensive teams in the state. Makayla was the fuel that fed our fire! She is one of the most fierce competitors I have ever coached. No one can beat her competitive spirit.”

Abigail HodgesAbigail Hodges – Oliver Ames – Defense
Oliver Ames senior Abigail Hodges was one of the league’s top defensive players and one of its most versatile. Capable of leading the backline or stepping up into the midfield, Hodges combined the physical nature of the game with the ability to pick out a defense-splitting pass. She was also OA’s primary weapon on set pieces and had plenty of dangerous deliveries for the Tigers. Hodges scored five goals this season and assisted on two others, helping OA reach the Div. 1 South quarterfinal. Oliver Ames coach Britt Sellmayer said, “She was the vocal leader of our defense and was an effective part of all are offensive restarts. Abby had the unique ability to put her teammates in the proper position for team defending.”

Breanna AtwoodBreanna Atwood – Franklin – Goalie
Franklin senior goalie Breanna Atwood earned first team honors for the second year in a row after another impressive season between for the Panthers. Atwood was one of the main reasons that the Panthers had one of the league’s top defensive records, allowing only nine goals in 18 games and allowing only two goals in regulation over the final 13 games of the season. She finished with 11 clean sheets and was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches for the second straight season. Franklin coach Tom Geysen said, “Her toughness, athleticism, and understanding of the game made Bre the best keeper in the league. In addition, she was a team leader and led by example in every possible way.”

HockomockSports.com Second XI

Jordyn CollinsJordyn Collins – Foxboro – Forward
Foxboro junior Jordyn Collins led the Hockomock League in goals during the regular season, firing the Warriors to a second straight Davenport division title and on a run to the Div. 2 South quarterfinal. Collins scored 23 goals and added three assists, breaking down opposing defenses with her blistering pace and with her intelligent runs into the channels, which gave the Warriors midfield a constant outlet when under pressure. Foxboro coach Katie Stalcup said, “Jordyn is a very fast and dangerous player. She is so strong on the ball and can take on any defender. She is a true striker and knows how to score goals. She is one of the hardest working players on the team.”

Elisa DiletiziaElisa Diletizia – Canton – Forward
Canton junior forward Elisa Diletizia made a leap this fall to become one of the league’s most dangerous attacking threats, using her skill on the ball to break down defenses and her accurate shot to find the back of the net from unlikely spots. Diletizia led the way for Canton with 16 goals and had four assists as the Bulldogs made a run to the Div. 2 South semifinal. Canton coach Kate Howarth said, “Elisa is just a player that finds ways to get it done. She puts herself in good positions to score goals and gets the ball in the back of the net. This year was more of a challenge for her because everyone knew to double down on her and she took that with stride and made adjustments. She will continue to do great things.”

Briley HarnoisBriley Harnois – Attleboro – Forward
Attleboro junior forward Briley Harnois continued to be a thorn in the opposition’s side this season, leading the Bombardiers in scoring and also starting the defensive effort from the front with her aggression. Harnois scored 10 goals and assisted on one this year, using her speed to get in behind the defense and her strong finishing ability to make the most of any scoring situation. She also led the team with her energy, putting the pressure on the defense with and without the ball. Attleboro coach Steve Santos said, “Briley is a quality playmaker with a great sense of the game. She is a passionate player who thrives and wants those crucial plays of a match. Whether it is a direct kick, a corner, or a PK, she wants it!”

Maddie BoyleMaddie Boyle – Milford – Midfield
Milford senior Maddie Boyle was a mainstay for the Scarlet Hawks in the center of the pitch, providing a physical ball-winner and cover for the backline and someone capable of springing the team forward into attack with a dangerous pass or free kick. Boyle scored four goals and added nine assists to help the Hawks make a return to the state tournament after six years. Milford coach Lou Colabello said, “Maddie is truly a team player. I asked her to switch from the back to midfield this year. She did it without a complaint and became one of the finer midfielders in the league. As a two-year captain, she demonstrated the capabilities of relating to all the players and gained the respect of her teammates both on and off the field.”

Mia GilmoreMia Gilmore – Canton – Midfield
Canton junior midfielder Mia Gilmore turned into one of the league’s top playmakers this season, finishing the regular season with the second-most assists and helping the Bulldogs make a run to the Div. 2 South semifinal. Gilmore finished the season with four goals and 18 assists and was a vital cog in the Canton offense, consistently finding the right pass to spring attacks. Canton coach Kate Howarth said, “Mia is a low-key player but has found a way throughout the whole season to be a difference-maker. She isn’t flashy and sometimes flies under the radar, which makes me even more dangerous! She is an anchor in the midfield and is a student of the game, which makes her special.”

Mackenzie ManningMackenzie Manning – Stoughton – Midfield
Stoughton junior Mackenzie Manning was integral to the Black Knights making significant strides offensively this season, jumping up to 34 goals scored, which was three times as many as last fall. Manning, a three-year starter and three-year leading scorer, tallied 11 goals this season and added three assists playing both as an attacking midfielder and as a forward. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. Stoughton coach Tara Daniels said, “Mackenzie has been a key player for our team since her freshman year, this year especially her presence on the field has been extremely noticeable. Mackenzie can play any position and is the hardest worker on the field for the whole 80 minutes.”

Katie MillerKatie Miller – Mansfield – Midfield
Mansfield sophomore Katie Miller was the only starter returning from 2018 and she took on a major role for the inexperienced Hornets this season, playing almost every minute of every game (1,430 of 1,440 minutes) as Mansfield came within one win of making it to the state tournament. A physical presence in midfield, Miller, who had one assist this season, played a key role in breaking up opposing attacks and turning those defensive efforts into quick transitions for the Hornets attack. Mansfield coach Katie Miller said, “Her strength lies in her work rate, ability to read the play, tenacity to break up opposing teams attacks, and her ability to drive with the ball at defenses and beat multiple attacking players.”

Anna BalkusAnna Balkus – Franklin – Defense
Franklin senior Anna Balkus played in multiple positions for the Panthers this season, but it was her move to left back that helped solidify the backline and turned Franklin into one of the best defensive squads in the league. The Panthers allowed only nine goals in 19 games and gave up only two goals in regulation over the final 13 games of the season. Balkus, who started up top and in midfield early in the year, scored twice and had an assist. Franklin coach Tom Geysen said, “We were 1-3 and treading water. After the move to defender, Anna turned our season around. Game after game she marked the other team’s best offensive player and shut her down. A totally unselfish player for all positions.”

Yara FawazYara Fawaz – Foxboro – Defense
Foxboro senior defender Yara Fawaz moved from outside back into the heart of the Warriors backline this season and she put in an impressive season cleaning up opposition attacks to help Foxboro win a second straight Davenport division title and a trip to the Div. 2 South quarterfinal. Fawaz used her speed and reading of the game to sweep up any ball that made it through the Foxboro midfield. Foxboro coach Katie Stalcup said. “Yara is an amazing defender with super speed and great instincts. She saved us so many times this season and I always felt safe with her in the backfield. She was my team MVP this season and, even though she didn’t score any goals, she won many games for us.”

Lydia HersheyLydia Hershey – North Attleboro – Defense
North Attleboro senior defender Lydia Hershey was a rock in the Rocketeers’ backline and a leader of a team that returned only two starters from 2018. Playing in the center of defense, Hershey helped North Attleboro allow fewer than two goals per game, despite being under pressure from some of the top attacks in the league. She was also able to turn defense into attack, pushing forward with the ball to get North’s transition game started. She was selected as an all-star by the Hockomock League coaches. North coach Bill Wallace said, “In addition to being a great defender, Lydia was a pleasure to coach. She was one of those kids that gave everything she had on the field and enjoyed her experience off the field!”

Taylor ButlerTaylor Butler – King Philip – Goalie
King Philip senior goalkeeper Taylor Butler had a dominant season between the pipes for the Warriors, controlling the backline with her communication and her quickness off the line. She allowed only nine goals in 22 games this season, an impressive goals against average of just 0.41. She totaled 15 shutouts for KP in helping to win a Kelley-Rex division title and get back to the Div. 1 South final for the second time in three seasons. KP coach Gary Pichel said, “Taylor had her breakout season as our keeper. Taylor commanded the inside of the 18 this year. She was our field general in every sense. She has cat-like reflexes, strong hands, and a booming punt. She saw the field well and reacted very quickly to all attacks.”

2019 HockomockSports Girls Soccer Awards

Foxboro sophomore Kailee McCabe has been selected as the 2019 HockomockSports.com Girls Soccer Underclassman of the Year, as the top performing freshman or sophomore player. The sophomore midfielder was a dominating presence in the center of the pitch again this season, helping the Warriors win a second straight Davenport division title.

McCabe has emerged as a star during her first two seasons with the Warriors, already closing in on 30 goals for her career. This fall, she scored 17 goals and added five assists, driving the Warriors forward from the center of the pitch. She controlled the game with her physicality, speed, and vision, breaking down the opposition with either an individual run or a killer pass.

“Kailee is a very skilled and smart player,” said Foxboro coach Katie Stalcup. “She is very quick on the ball and distributes well.  She loves to take opponents on is a huge threat to other teams.”

McCabe was selected as an all-star by Hockomock League coaches and was chosen for the HockomockSports.com Bext XI for the second year in a row.

“Last year was a breakout season, but this year was even more impressive,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “Even though teams knew what to expect, knew to try and slow her down, she was almost unplayable at times. Few players were as impactful over such a wide area of the pitch and even fewer could turn that into goals as frequently as Kailee.”

McCabe is the first girls’ soccer player to be named Underclassman of the Year as both a freshman and sophomore. Franklin’s Ali Brigham is the only other player to be Underclassman of the Year two years in a row, winning it for girls basketball in 2017 and 2018.

Honorable Mentions: Shayla Ford (Stoughton), Camryn O’Connor (Oliver Ames), Norah Anderson (Franklin), Grace Lawler (King Philip)

Coach of the Year

Coach of the Year

Gary Pichel
Gary Pichel

King Philip head coach Gary Pichel has been selected as the 2019 HockomockSports.com Girls Soccer Coach of the Year after leading the Warriors to the Kelley-Rex division title and the Div. 1 South final for the second time in three seasons.

The Warriors entered the season as heavy favorites to win the league, as the roster was loaded with upperclassmen, but KP dominated from start to finish. Pichel put the pieces together, for instance moving senior Ally Stanton back to bolster the midfield and utilizing freshman Grace Lawlor to mark the top players on the opposition, and led the Warriors to an 18-0-0 regular season.

KP stayed unbeaten into the D1 South final and was 20 minutes from its second sectional title in three seasons, before a comeback by eventual state champion Bishop Feehan. The Warriors were dominant at both ends of the field, allowing only nine goals in 22 games this season and scoring 93. They set a program record with 21 wins in a single season.

“This was one of the most dominant seasons that we’ve seen,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “It wasn’t just about the talent on the field, of which there was plenty, but also the moves that Gary made and the attitude that he had the team playing with. He always had them set out to attack, put teams on the back foot, and to control play, and the team responded every game.”

Pichel was named Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons. He is the second girls’ soccer coach to be honored multiple times, joining Franklin Tom Geysen, who was named Coach of the Year each of the first two seasons the award was given out (2012 and 2013).

Honorable Mentions: Katie Stalcup (Foxboro), Lou Colabello (Milford), Tom Geysen (Franklin)
